Stan State softball makes return to CCAA Championship tournament

The Warriors return to the CCAA Softball Championship Tournament for the first time since 2008 as they take on UC San Diego in the night game of the first day of the event.

Series Notes:
After the split in La Jolla in mid-April, the Tritons lead the all-time head-to-head series, 53-26. Stan State had snapped a 13-game losing streak to UCSD with the April 14 doubleheader sweep.

Last Time We Met... was April 14 in La Jolla. The Warriors took both games of the twinbill, including a series finale 8-0 victory in six innings.

About the Tritons: UC San Diego won six straight games to end the regular season. The Tritons are 7-1 since losing to the Warriors … Last weekend UCSD outscored CSU Dominguez Hills 26-6 … Robyn Wampler was named the CCAA Pitcher of the Week for the third consecutive week. She has 22 wins (one behind leader Haley Gilham of Chico State) and five saves … Sherriah Harrington leads the conference with a .423 batting average … As a team the Tritons are batting .306, third best in the CCAA … UC San Diego has the second best team ERA os 2.24 … UCSD won the CCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2016.
 

Postseason Trips
Stanislaus State is making its first postseason appearance since 2009. The Warriors did not qualify for the CCAA Tournament in 2009 but played in, and won, the West Regional to advance to the Super Regional … This is the Warriors' first CCAA Tournament trip since 2008, when they went 3-0 to capture the banner in their only appearance … In all, this is Stan State's sixth postseason appearance … The 2007 team won the West Region and advanced to the NCAA Championships.

Program's Best
This year's team has posted the program's best record since 2009 with 32 wins. The 2009 team went 35-21 including the postseason. The team record is 50 wins (50-20), set in 2007.

Top Notch Pitching
The Warriors' pitching staff is the third best in the CCAA with a collective ERA of 2.77. Stan State trails only Chico State (1.87) and UC San Diego (2.29) … Four Warriors boast ERAs of 2.75 or better and three are in the CCAA's top 10.

Regional Rankings
The Warriors are ranked No. 9 in the lastest NCAA West Region poll (released May 2). They had debuted at No. 10 two weeks ago and was No. 7 last week. This is the first time the Warriors are ranked in the West since 2009, when they were the No. 4 seed in the regional tournament … UC San Diego is No. 4 in West.

No Sophomore Slump for Stacy
Sophomore Megan Stacy has been the pitching leader in 2018 with 11 wins and a team-best 2.46 ERA. She also leads the team with 68 strikeouts with nine complete games … Stacy ties for sixth in the CCAA with 11 victories and her ERA is eighth best … She's coming off a weekend where she had a win and a save, including a complete-game win over Cal State Monterey Bay last Friday in the tournament berth-clinching win.

Sensational Freshman
Aliyah Garvin
, a finalist for CCAA Freshman of the Year, is having a tremendous rookie season. Garvin is second on the team with a .339 average, 61 hits, 10 doubles, 35 RBIs and a .444 slugging percentage … She ranks third in the CCAA in hits (61) and is fifth in RBI (35).

Texas-Leaguer
Alexus Martinez, known as "Tex" on the team because she's from Austin, leads the team offensively again. She is batting .348 with 62 hits, both team bests … In her three-year career so far, Martinez is batting .371 with 206 hits in 158 games.

Youth Movement
Led by Aliyah Garvin, the Stan State lineup features five underclassmen, all contribute regularly. Garvin and sophomores Desiree Gonzalez and Deja Guzman have started in all 52 games while freshman Maya Yoshiura has started in 47 games … Freshman Alanah Laupua has been sidelined with an injury and will be replaced by freshman Joerdan Lovell.

Senior Leadership
Five seniors will look to finish their careers on a high as they continue to lead the team. At the plate, Ruby Quiralte is batting .310 with five homers and Katelyn McDonald (.243, 7 doubles, 18 RBI) has guarded first and came up with big hits … Bryanna Menor was 5-for her last 10 at bats. She's also reached bease in her last six games … In the circle, Kristin Borst (2.28) and Karina Callazo (2.75) are part of the staff with a sub 3.00 ERA.Sister Act
Aliyah Garvin
and Anyssa Garvin are sisters from Hanford. Aliyah has been one of the best hitters in the CCAA while older sister Anyssa contributed both in the circle (4.10 ERA) and in the box (.235). They enjoyed a special moment on March 30 when both homered in the game.
