Chase Wheatcroft Draft

Oakland A's selected Wheatcroft in the 37th round

6/5/2019 3:04:00 PM

The Oakland Athletics have selected Stanislaus State pitcher Chase Wheatcroft on day three of the MLB Draft.

Wheatcroft was selected by the A's in the 37th round, as the 1,124th pick, on Wednesday.

Wheatcroft went 6-4 with a 2.64 ERA as the Warriors' pitching ace. He was an All-CCAA first team pick and finished with 55 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings, including a complete game shutout. He had set a Stanislaus State record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched at 27 until teammate Matt Pulos surpassed his mark.

The right-hander from Santa Clarita was a NCBWA All-West Region first team pick and was a preseason All-American selection. He had moved from the closer role, where he recorded 11 saves in 2018 despite a mid-season injury, to the starting role in early 2019.

Wheatcroft was one of 76 Division II — and just one of four from the CCAA — players selected in this year's draft. He's one of five Division II pitchers picked by the Oakland A's in this draft.

He's currently playing summer ball in Travese City, Mich. for the Travese City Pit Spitters of the Northwoods League.

Wheatcroft was the second consecutive Stan State pitching ace to be drafted in the MLB Draft. Last year, Joe Ryan was picked in the seventh round by Tampa Bay. Ryan is currently a starter for the Charlotte Stone Crabs (High A) in Florida.
