Stan State Academic Senate passes resolution for student-athlete priority registration

4/30/2020 12:40:00 PM

The Stanislaus State Academic Senate passed a resolution permitting priority registration for student-athletes during its most recent virtual meeting on Tuesday.  The resolution further demonstrates the university's support for academic success and NCAA compliance for its student-athletes.

The topic had been the source of debate for more than a decade.  Stan State had been the last remaining California State University which sponsors intercollegiate athletics without priority registration for student-athletes.

"Along with other campus groups, ASI Student Government embarked on a multi-year quest advocating for student-athletes.  It took a team effort to finally say student-athletes will be provided with priority registration at Stanislaus State," said Maria Marquez, President of Associated Students, Inc. (ASI).

The initiative has been supported by ASI and its elected officials for several years.  Current student body President Marquez and Vice President Michelle Nungaray led the initiative this academic year in support of the student-shared governance.

"The decision by the Academic Senate in support of priority registration for student-athletes is a tremendous victory for all Warriors," said Director of Athletics Terry Donovan. "I am grateful to Dr. (Steve) Filling and Dr. (Robert) Werling in their leadership of the Senate to bring this student initiative for a vote.  Maria's and Michelle's leadership and perseverance were tremendous.  This is a monumental achievement under President Dr. Ellen Junn's leadership."

Dr. Filling is the Speaker of the Academic Senate and Dr. Werling chairs the University Educational Policies Committee.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president Jenna Zuniga also provided leadership in getting the student-athletes' voices heard.

"This year, being SAAC president, I wanted to continue with the push of priority registration and make it a top initiative," said Zuniga, who is a member of the women's soccer team. "While, as a senior, I personally won't be making the most of this awesome opportunity, but I am truly excited to see how this will benefit future generations of Warriors."

It is expected to enhance the work-life balance for coaching faculty and student-athletes as well as improve overall academic performance.  Student-athletes spend countless hours each week training, practicing, and preparing to represent their university in competition in addition to their academic and employment rigor.

"As a coach and faculty member here at Stan State I'm grateful for the support we have received from the Academic Senate and all across campus. This is an important tool for the academic success of our student-athletes," added women's soccer head coach Gabriel Bolton, who has also been involved in advocating for the initiative during his tenure.
