TURLOCK, Calif.--- After finishing off its five-game home stand 4-1 including going 2-0 against No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona, Stan State men's basketball team will begin a four-game road trip with a pair of games in the Bay Area this weekend. The Warriors will be in San Francisco this Thursday, January 19 for a 7:30pm scheduled tip with San Francisco State. Stan State will travel to Seaside, Calif., this Saturday, January 21 for a 3pm scheduled game with Cal State Monterey Bay.
WARRIORS IN REVIEW: Stan State improved to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA after sweeping No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona this weekend to finish its home stand 4-1. The Warriors are averaging 67.4 points per game while giving up 71.1 points per game. They are being outrebounded 36.3 to 32.5.
Kobe Ordonio leads the way for Stan State with his 15.2 scoring average and 78% shooting from the line. Ordonio is tied with
Will Pallesi each with 29 three-point field goals made.
Marlon Short is second on the team with his 14.4 scoring average but has blocked a team high nine shots. Short is tied with
Travion Williams for the team leading in rebounding each averaging 5.9 rebounds per game. He leads the team with his 46% shooting from the field.
Benno Zecic leads the Warriors with his 110 assists and 29 steals while Pallesi has connected on a team high 35.4% of his shots from three-point range.
LAST GAMES: The Warriors swept their two games with then No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino 94-84 and Cal Poly Pomona 70-62. In their game against the Yotes, six Warriors scored in double figures led by
Kobe Ordonio's 23 points and
Marlon Short's 21.
Travion Williams had a season high 12 points while
Benno Zecic recorded his second double-double of his career with 10 points and 11 assists.
Will Pallesi and
Jeremiah Jones each chipped in 10 points. The Warriors held the Yotes to just 33% shooting from three-point range and forced 17 turnovers. Stan State finished its five-game home stand with a 70-62 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday behind Ordonio's 23 points. Short chipped in 16 points while Zecic had nine assists with no turnovers. Stan State held the Broncos to just 34% shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers.
ORDONIO CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Stan State's
Kobe Ordonio was named this week's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Basketball Player of the Week as announced by the conference office this afternoon. Ordonio averaged 23.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in the Warriors' 2-0 weekend against No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
4-1: The Warriors went 4-1 in their five-game home stand defeating Chico State (68-65), Cal State East Bay (68-58), No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino (94-84) and Cal Poly Pomona (70-62). Their only blemish was a 68-56 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills. In that span, Stan State was averaging 71.2 points per game while giving up 67.4 points per game. The Warriors forced 14.8 turnovers by their opponents and recorded 8.2 steals. They held their opponents to just 41.2% shooting from the field including just 29.8% from three-point range.
In those five games,
Marlon Short is averaging 16.8 points per game while
Kobe Ordonio is right behind him at 14.8 points per game. Short is shooting 54.5% from the field and Ordonio has made a team leading 11 of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Benno Zecic has 40 assists and 14 turnovers in those five games with a team leading 15 steals. Zecic also led the team with his 6.2 rebounding average and 46.2% shooting from beyond the arc.
Will Pallesi connected on a team high 85.7% of his attempts from the charity stripe and
Travion Williams blocked a team high five shots.
CCAA TOURNAMENT HOPES: Stan State is now in sixth place with its 5-5 CCAA record. The Warriors are just one game out of fifth place (Chico State) and two games out of second place (Cal State San Marcos, Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State). Cal State San Bernardino leads the league with its 7-1 record. The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Basketball Championships which will be held March 2-4 at Fitzpatrick Arena on the campus of Stanislaus State. The winner of the CCAA Basketball Championships will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
MOVIN' ON UP: Benno Zecic is now fifth on Stan State's all-time career list with 252 total assists. He is 45 assists from moving past Sam Marcus'14 into fourth place. Ty Davis'20 holds the career mark with 380. Zecic has 110 assists this season and is 14 from moving into 11th place on the single season list past Brian Barnett (1997-98) and 23 from moving into tenth place past Barnett (1999-2000) and Davis (2017-18). Richard Seay (1991-92) holds the single season record with 183. His 11 assists against No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino (Jan. 12, 2023) and Academy of Art (Nov. 22, 2022) are tied for seventh on the single game list at Stan State. Richard Seay has the school record with 15 assists on Feb. 27, 1992, versus then Cal State Hayward.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Marlon Short and
Benno Zecic each have recorded double-doubles this season for the Warriors. Short has four this season including against Cal State East Bay (19 points, 10 rebounds) on Jan. 5, 2023. He also recorded double-doubles at Cal Poly Humboldt on Dec. 10, 2022 (18-points, 10-rebounds), Academy of Art (Nov. 22, 21-points, 10-rebounds) and at Chico State (Nov. 26, 16 points, 10-rebounds). For his career, Short has seven double-doubles. Zecic recorded his first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game on December 1 against Cal State San Marcos. The Alameda native scored 10 points and dished out 10 assists for Stan State. His second double-double came in the Warriors' win over then No. 12 CSUSB with 10 points and 11 assists.
SECOND/SEVENTH IN THE NATION: Stan State's redshirt junior guard
Benno Zecic is second in the nation with his 6.875 assists per game average and seventh with his 110 total assists. Zecic leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in both categories. Coker's Jordan Jones leads the nation with his 6.941 assists per game average in 17 games played. Northern State's Sam Marsten and Lincoln Memorial's Chase Rankin lead the nation in total assists each with 119. Both Marsten and Rankin have played in 18 games this season while Zecic has played in 16 games.
TOP HALF IN THE CCAA: As a team, Stan State is in the top half of the conference in six team statistical categories. The Warriors are second in three-point field goal percentage defense (32.3%), third in turnover margin (+2.13) and in steals (7.81 per game), fourth in assist/turnover ratio (+1.04) and assists per game (13.13) and tied for fourth in scoring defense (71.1 points per game).

GATORS IN REVIEW: San Francisco State enters Thursday's game with the Warriors with a 7-9 overall record and a 3-7 CCAA mark. The Gators have lost seven of their last ten games but won both games last weekend on the road at Cal State East Bay (53-49) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (78-75 overtime). They are averaging 69.8 points per game while giving up 72.9 points per game. SF State is outrebounding its opoponents 39.8 to 36.6. Three Gators are averaging double digits in Jonah Roth (12.1 ppg), Eche Okeke (12.1 ppg) and Toby Okwuoukei (10.3 ppg). Okeke leads the team with his 13 blocked shots, 6.3 rebounding average and 54.2% shooting from the field. Roth has made a team high 30 three-point field goals and connected on a team leading 36.6% of those attempts. He leads the Gators with his 80.5% shooting from the line. Okwoukei leads the team with his 40 assists while John Bakke has a team high leading 20 steals.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Stan State leads the all-time series with the Gators 31-25 including winning four of the last six meetings. The Gators swept the series last year 67-42 in San Francisco and 82-80 in overtime in Turlock. In the game in San Francisco,
Marlon Short paced the Warriors with 11 points while Eche Okeke had a team high 15 points for SF State. In the game in Turlock, Jalen Flanagain had a game high 20 points for the Gators.
Benno Zecic paced the Warriors with 15 points and seven assists while
Will Pallesi chipped in 14 points.
Matt Bender added 11 points and Short scored 10 points.
OTTERS IN REVIEW: Entering their game on Thursday versus Chico State, Cal State Monterey Bay Otters are 4-10 overall and 2-7 in the CCAA. CSUMB has lost two of its last 11 games while split its two games this past weekend. The Otters lost 75-64 at Cal State Dominguez Hills and came back to defeat Cal State East Bay 70-67. Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Joe Wall (14.3 ppg), Levi Frankland (13.4 ppg), Jordan Archie (11.3 ppg) and Jailen Nelson (10.9 ppg). Wall leads the team with his 6.1 rebounding average and 52 three-point field goals made. He is tied with Frankland and Jared Williams each with seven blocked shots. Nelson leads the Otters with his 45.2% shooting from the field, 41 assists and 22 steals. Archie has made a team leading 42.4% of his attempts from beyond the arc. Ameere Britton has connected on a team high 78.1% of his attempts from the line.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Stan State leads the all-time series with the Otters 19-16 including winning six of the last eight meetings. The Otters won both meetings last year 61-51 in Seaside and 56-54 in Turlock. In Seaside,
Tony Singleton led the Warriors with 17 points while Jalen Nelson led CSUMB with 13 points. in their game in Turlock,
Marlon Short paced Stan State with 17 points while Tommy Kramer had a game high 19 points for CSUMB.
