Stan State Men’s Basketball to Start Off Second Half of Conference Season at CSUDH and Cal State East Bay

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will begin the second half of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season finishing off its four-game road trip.  The Warriors will be at Carson, Calif., for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, January 26.  They will end their road trip in Hayward, Calif., on Saturday, January 28 for a 3pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State East Bay.

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  The Warriors are 7-11 overall and 5-7 in the CCAA after going 0-2 at SF State (67-63) and Cal State Monterey Bay (80-74).  Stan State is averaging 67.5 points per game while giving up 71.4 points per game. The Warriors are being outrebounded 36.7 to 33.1 rebounds per game.  They are holding their opponents to just 33.2% shooting from the field while forcing 14.8 turnovers per game and recording 7.9 steals per game.  Marlon Short leads the way with his 15.4 scoring average, 47.2% shooting from the field and ten blocked shots.  Kobe Ordonio is second on the team with his 14.7 scoring average.  He leads the team with his 77.8% shooting from the line and 32 three-point field goals made.  Benno Zecic has dished out a team high 119 assists while recording a team leading 34 steals.  Will Pallesi leads the team with his 34.1% shooting from three-point range. 

LAST GAMES:  The Warriors saw both of their comebacks from deficit fall short in their two games in the Bay Area this weekend.  Stan State trailed by as much as 16 points in its 67-63 loss at SF State on Thursday.  The Warriors cut the deficit to just two with ten seconds to go, but that's the closest they can get in their loss to the Gators.  Three players scored in double figures in Marlon Short (18 points), Travion Williams (13 points) and Benno Zecic (10 points).  Williams had nine rebounds and Zecic had four steals.  The Warriors trailed by as much as 19 points at CSUMB and took a seven-point lead with four minutes to go, but couldn't hold on as the Otters took the 80-74 victory.  Short had a career high 28 points to go with his season high six assists.  Kobe Ordonio scored 13 points and Williams recorded his first double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.  Zecic added seven assists, seven rebounds and nine points for the Warriors.

CCAA TOURNAMENT HOPES:  Stan State is in a three-way tie for seventh place with its 5-7 CCAA record.  The Warriors are just one game out of sixth place (Chico State), 1 ½ games out of fifth place (Cal Poly Pomona), two out of third place (Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State).  Cal State San Marcos is in second place with its 9-3 record and No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino is in first place at 9-1.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Basketball Championships which will be held March 2-4 at Fitzpatrick Arena on the campus of Stanislaus State.  The winner of the CCAA Basketball Championships will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. 

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TRIO:  The trio of Marlon Short, Benno Zecic and Travion Williams each have recorded double-doubles this season.  Short has four in Academy of Art (Nov. 22, 21 points, 10 rebounds), at Chico State  (Nov. 26, 16 points, 10 rebounds), at Cal Poly Humboldt (Dec. 10, 18 points, 10 rebounds) and versus Cal State East Bay (Jan. 5, 19 points, 10 rebounds), Zecic has two against Cal State San Marcos (December 10 points, 10 assists) and against then No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino (Jan. 12, 10 points, 11 assists).  Williams' double-double came this weekend at Cal State Monterey Bay (Jan. 21, 11 points, 12 rebounds).  For their careers, Short has seven double-doubles while Zecic has two and Williams has one. 

CAREER NIGHT:  Marlon Short scored a season high 28 points in the Warriors' game at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.  He shot 14-for-25 from the field while grabbing four rebounds in 37 minutes.  Short dished out a season high six assists and recorded one steal for the Warriors.  For the season. Short is averaging 15.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.  He is shooting 47.2% from the field and 72.3% from the line while blocking ten shots.  Short has 23 assists to go with his 26 steals. 

MOVIN' ON UP: Benno Zecic has dished out 261 assists during his career as a Warrior which 119 have come this season.  He is 36 assists from moving past Sam Marcus'14 into fourth place on Stan State's career list.  Ty Davis'20 holds the school record with 380.  Zecic is five from moving into 11th place on the single season list and 14 from moving into tenth place.  Richard Seay (1991-92) holds the single season record with 183.  His 11 assists against then No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino (Jan. 12, 2023) and Academy of Art (Nov. 22, 2022) are tied for seventh on the Warrior single season list.  Seay has school record with 15 assists on Feb. 27, 1992, against then Cal State Hayward.   

SIXTH/EIGHTH, 21ST IN THE NATION:  Stan State's redshirt junior guard Benno Zecic is sixth in the nation with his 6.6 assists per game average while Florida Tech's Sesan Russell leads the nation at 7.1 assists per game.  He is eighth with 119 assists while Chase Rankin of Lincoln Memorial is first with 134 total assists.  Travion Williams is 21st in the nation with his 3.25 offensive rebounds per game average while Lincoln University's (Missouri) Kevin Kone leads the nation with his 4.80 average. 

TOP HALF IN THE CCAA: As a team, Stan State is in the top half of the conference in four team categories in scoring defense, three-point field goal percentage defense, turnover margin and assist/turnover ratio.  The Warriors are third in three-point field goal percentage defense (33.2%), turnover margin (+2.61) and assist/turnover ratio (+1.07).  Stan Sate is fourth with its 71.6 points per game scoring defense. 

TOP 15 IN THE CCAA:  Five Warriors are in the top 15 in the CCAA in twelve individual statistical categories in Marlon Short, Benno Zecic, Kobe Ordonio, Travion Williams and Will Pallesi.  Short is seventh in scoring and field goal percentage while he is tenth in minutes, tied for tenth in steals, tied for eleventh in steals per game, 13th in blocked shots and 15th in rebounding average.  Ordonio is sixth in free throw percentage, ninth in minutes, tenth in scoring, tied for tenth in steals, tied for eleventh in steals per game, 13th in field goal percentage and 14th in three-point field goals made per game.  Zecic is leading the CCAA in assists and assists per game while he is tied for second in steals per game.  He is third in assist/turnover ratio and steals and sixth in minutes.  Williams is sixth in rebounding, fourteenth in blocked shots per game and fifteenth in blocked shots while Pallesi is fifteenth in three=point field goals made per game.

TOROS IN REVIEW: Cal State Dominguez Hills enters this week with an 8-10 overall record including 4-8 in the CCAA.  The Toros are averaging 71.9 points per game while giving up 71.7 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 37.3 to 37.2.  Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Cameron Barry (13.9 ppg), DJ Guest (13.7 ppg) and Jordan Hilstock (11.4 ppg).  Guest leads the team with his 7.8 rebounding average while Damian Miller has a team leading 78 assists and 30 steals.  Hunter Seymour has blocked a team high 16 shots.  Guest leads the team with his 46.6% shooting from the field and Miller is shooting a team high 73.3% from the line.  Hilstock has connected on a team high 50 three-point field goals and a team high 39.4% of his attempts from beyond the arc. 

LAST TIME/ALL-TIME SERIES: Cal State Dominguez Hills leads the all-time series with the Warriors 27-22 with the Toros defeating Stan State 68-56 on January 7.  DJ Guest paced the Toros with 16 points.  Marlon Short had 13 points for the Warriors and Travion Williams chipped in 10 points.  Stan State's last win in Carson was a 78-74 victory on February 17, 2018. 

PIONEERS IN REVIEW:  Entering their game on Thursday versus Chico State, Cal State East Bay is 5-13 overall and 3-9 in the CCAA.  The Pioneers are averaging 65.1 points per game while giving up 70.5 points per game while being outrebounded 36.4 to 32.9.  Grady Lewis leads the way with his 14.5 scoring average, 61.1% shooting from the field and 11 blocked shots.  Dimitrios Kednaras is averaging 12.3 points per game while leading the team with his 24 steals and his 6.4 rebounding average.  Garrett Pascoe has dished out a team high 84 assists.  Chris James has made a team high 19 three-point field goals and Kevin Ebiriekwe is shooting a team leading 40.9% from beyond the arc. 

LAST/ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series with Cal State East Bay 16-5 including winning the last four in a row. The Warriors defeated the Pioneers 68-58 on January 5 behind Marlon Short's 19-points, 10-rebounds.  Kobe Ordonio and Jeremiah Jones each had 13 points and Will Pallesi chipped in 10 points.  The last Warrior win in Hayward was 59-58 on December 22, 2019.
