Warriors to Return Home to Face Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will return to The Fitzpatrick Arena this Thursday and Saturday, February 2 and 4 to face Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State in two crucial CCAA games.  The Warriors will entertain Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday, February 2 at 7:30pm.  This will be Student Affairs Night as well as Title IX Celebration Night.  Stan State will host Sonoma State on Golden Valley Health Center Day on Saturday, February 4 at 3pm. 

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  The Warriors enter this weekend with an 8-12 overall record and a 6-8 CCAA record.  They are averaging 67.2 points per game while giving up 70.8 points per game. Stan State is being outrebounded 36.1 to 33.1. The Warriors are forcing 14.6 turnovers per game while holding their opponents to just 33.1% shooting from the field.  Stan State has a +2.1 turnover margin and a +1.0 assist/turnover ratio.  Marlon Short leads the way with his 15.2 scoring average followed by Kobe Ordonio at 12.8 points per game.  Short is shooting a team leading 46.6% from the field and a team high 12 blocked shots.  Ordonio leads the team with his 77.8 shooting from the line and has made a team high 35 three-point field goals.  Benno Zecic leads the team with his 64 assists and 40 steals while Travion Williams has a team leading 6.8 rebounds per game average.  Will Pallesi is shooting a team best 34.1% from beyond the arc.   

LAST GAMES:  Stan State went 1-1 last weekend on the road in the conference.  The Warriors came back from a 16-point deficit to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday behind Jeremiah Jones' 14 points off the bench.  Travion Williams recorded his second double-double in as many games with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Williams made the winning free throw with 1.7 seconds left in regulation.  Marlon Short chipped in 11 points and Benno Zecic added eight points, eight assists, five rebounds and four steals.  The Warriors lost a nail biter 66-63 at Cal State East Bay on Saturday despite Short's 16 points and two blocked shots.  Zecic chipped in 12 points while dishing out four assists, recording two steals and grabbing five rebounds.   

CCAA TOURNAMENT HOPES:  Stan State is in a tie for eighth place with Cal State Los Angeles.  The Warriors are just a half-game out of sixth place which is held by Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay. They are one game out of fifth place (Chico State) and two out of third place (Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State).  The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Basketball Championships which will be held March 2-4 at Fitzpatrick Arena on the campus of Stanislaus State.  The winner of the CCAA Basketball Championships will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. 

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TRIO:  The trio of Marlon Short, Benno Zecic and Travion Williams each have recorded double-doubles this season.  Short has four in Academy of Art (Nov. 22, 21 points, 10 rebounds), at Chico State  (Nov. 26, 16 points, 10 rebounds), at Cal Poly Humboldt (Dec. 10, 18 points, 10 rebounds) and versus Cal State East Bay (Jan. 5, 19 points, 10 rebounds), Zecic has two against Cal State San Marcos (December 10 points, 10 assists) and against then No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino (Jan. 12, 10 points, 11 assists).  Williams' double-double came at Cal State Monterey Bay (Jan. 21, 11 points, 12 rebounds) and at Cal State Dominguez hills (Jan. 26, 11 points, 10 rebounds).  For their careers, Short has seven double-doubles while Zecic and Williams each have two. 

JJ NIGHTJeremiah Jones tied his career high with 14 points in the Warriors' 66-65 come-from-behind victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday.  He played in 24 minutes off the bench and shot six-for-12 from the field including one-for-three from three-point land.  Jones grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists and had two steals to go with his 14 points to lead the way for Stan State. 

MOVIN' ON UP: Benno Zecic is fifth on the Warriors' all-time career list with 273 assists.  He is 24 from moving into fifth place past Sam Marcus'14 on the career list.  Zecic has  dished out 131 assists this season which is 11th on the single season list.  He is two from moving into ninth, sixth from moving into eight, seven from moving into seventh, eight from moving into sixth and 11 from moving into fifth place on the single season list.  His 40 steals are ten away from moving into the top ten on the single season list in steals. 

5, 8, 17, 21, 28:  Stan State due of Benno Zecic and Travion Williams is in the top 30 in the in five statistical categories in total assists, assists per game, offensive rebounds per game, total steals and steals per game.  Zecic fifth with his 6.6 assists per game average and eighth with his 131 total assists.  The redshirt junior is 27th in total steals and 28th in steals per game.  Williams is 17th in the nation with his 3.39 offensive rebounds per game average. 

TOP HALF IN THE CCAA: As a team, Stan State is in the top half of the conference in six team statistical categories.  The Warriors are second in steals per game (7.75), third in turnover margin (+2.10) and assist/turnover ratio (+1.03).  They are tied for third in three-point field goal percentage (33.1%) and tied for fourth in scoring defense (70.8 points per game). 

TOP 15 IN THE CCAA:  Five Warriors are in the top 15 in the CCAA in thirteen individual statistical categories.  Benno Zecic leads the CCAA in total assists (131) and assists per game (6.6).  He is tied for first with his 40 steals and second in steal per game (2.0).  Zecic is fourth with his +2.0 assist/turnover ratio and fifth with his 34.1 minutes per game average.  Marlon Short sixth in field goal percentage (46.6%), eighth in scoring (15.2 ppg), eighth in minutes played (32.7), 11th in total blocked shots (12) and tied for 12th in blocked shots per game (0.6).  Kobe Ordonio is tied for 12th in three-point field goals made per game (1.8), 13th in scoring (14.1 points per game) and 14th in minutes played per game (31.6).  Travion Williams is second in offensive rebounds per game (3.39), sixth in rebounding (6.8), tied for 12th in blocked shots per game (0.6) and tied for thirteenth with 10 blocked shots.  Will Pallesi is tied for 14th with his 1.8 three-point field goals made per game average. 

LUMBERJACKS IN REVIEW: Cal Poly Humboldt enters its game with the Warriors with a 10-10 overall record and an 8-6 CCAA record.  The Jacks are 5-5 in their last ten games including going 1-4 in their last five games.  They defeated SF State 85-37 on Thursday and lost to Cal State Monterey Bay 82-80 on Saturday.  Humboldt is averaging 80.1 points per game while giving up 79.0 points per game.  The Lumberjacks are being outrebounded 37.1 to 36.7.  Four players are averaging double digits in Marlon Ruffin (15.7 ppg), Malek Davis (11.4 ppg), Cam Timmons (10.8 ppg) and Ian Krishnan (10.5 ppg).  Timmons leads the team with his 6.7 rebounds per game average, 15 blocked shots and 64.3% shooting from the field.  Ruffin has connected on a team high 41% of his attempts from beyond the arc while recording a team high 34 steals.  Krishnan leads the team with his 39 three three-point field goals made.  Davis has dished out a team high 75 assists and connected on a team high 86% of his attempts from beyond the arc.   

LAST TIME/ALL-TIME SERIES: Cal Poly Humboldt defeating the Warriors 79-68 on December 10, 2022, in Arcata with Jaden Edwards leading the way for the Jacks with 16 points  Marlon Short paced Stan State with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Kobe Ordonio chipped in 15 points.  Noel Alexander Jr. added 12 points and Will Pallesi scored 11 points.  Humboldt leads the all-time series with Stan State 23-9.  The two teams are 3-3 in their last six meetings with Stan State's last win in Turlock being on February 7, 2019, an 88-84 victory.   

SEAWOLVES IN REVIEW:  Entering their game on Thursday at Chico State, Sonoma State Seawolves are 9-12 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA.  The Seawolves are 5-5 in their last ten games and 2-3 in their last five games. They went 1-1 last week at home losing 61-58 to Cal State Monterey Bay and defeating SF State 69-60.  Sonoma State is averaging 69.8 points per game while giving up 71.6 points per game.  The Seawolves are outrebounding their opponents 34.5 to 32.6.  Jayden Wells is averaging a team high 22.8 points per game while leading the team with his 48 assists, 37 steals, 53.8% shooting the field, 45.9% shooting from three-point range, 34 three-point field goals made, 83.8% shooting from the line and 8.2 rebounds per game average.  Austin Fadal is second on the team with his 12.8 scoring average.  Nick Klarman has blocked a team high 23 shots. 
LAST/ALL-TIME SERIES:  Sonoma State leads the all-time series with the Warriors 24-17 with Stan State winning three of the last five games between the two teams.  The Seawolves won the first meeting this season 80-46 in Rohnert Park on December 8, 2022.  Austin Fadal had 20 points to lead the way for Sonoma with Jaylen Wells adding 14 points.  Baljot Sahi paced the Warriors with nine points while Mahda Fallay added eight points.  Stan State last defeated the Seawolves 70-55 in Turlock on December 18, 2022.  Tony Singleton had 20 points to lead the Warriors.  Will Pallesi added 12 points and Benno Zecic chipped in 10 points and had eight assists.
