Warriors Return to the Road for a Pair of CCAA Games

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will be back on the road this Thursday and Saturday, December 7 and 9 in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area for a pair of CCAA games.  The Warriors will face Cal State Dominguez Hills this Thurs., Dec. 7 for a 7:30pm scheduled game in Carson.  The road trip will continue Saturday, December 9 for a 3pm game with Cal State Los Angeles in Los Angeles.    
 
WARRIORS:  Stan State is 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA after splitting their two CCAA openers last week.  The Warriors are averaging 69.4 points per game while giving up 71.6 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 38.4 to 38.1.  Two players are averaging double digits in scoring in Dontrell Hewlett (13.4 ppg) and John Wade III (12.1 ppg).  Wade leads the team with his 21 assists and 16 steals.  Daniel Ameyaw is averaging a team leading 7.5 rebounds per game to go with his eight blocked shots. Tony Singleton has made a team leading 15 treys and shooting a team high 35.6% from three-point range and 83.3% from the line.  Will Chavarin leads the team with his 54.5% shooting from the field. 
 
STAN STATE HEAD COACH PAUL TREVOR: Coach Trevor enters his seventh year as the head coach at Stan State and 14th year overall coaching.  He is 175-160 in his fourteen years including 68-74 on the sidelines in Turlock.  During his 14-year coaching career, Trevor has coached 27 All-CCAA honorees including eight First Team selections and one CCAA Newcomer of the Year.  Two players have been named to the preseason All-American Teams with one receiving All-American honors and three All-Region honors.  In 2016-17 at SF State, he guided the Gators the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in 23 years and he was named the NABC West Region Co-Coach of the Year while the Gators were ranked  No. 22 in the end of the season national NABC rankings.  
 
HOME STAND:   Stan State went 1-1 on its home stand last week.  The Warriors lost 86-76 to Cal State East Bay despite Dontrell Hewlett's 19 points.  John Wade III added 15 points and Micah Boone chipped in 10 points. They came back and defeated SF State 70-65 behind Daniel Ameyaw's double-double performance of 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Hewlett and Wade each scored 14 points for the victors who forced 18 turnovers. The trio of Hewlett (16.5 ppg), Wade (14.5 ppg), and Ameyaw (12.5 ppg) led the Warriors in scoring while Ameyaw averaged 10.0 rebounds per game.  Will Chavarin shot 71% from the field including 66% from three-point land.  Stan State's defense forced 34 turnovers in the two games including 16 by steals (four each by Hewlett and Wade).  
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Daniel Ameyaw recorded his first double-double as a Warrior in Stan State's 82-77 victory over Western Oregon in Rohnert Park, Nov. 17.  Ameyaw was four-for-seven from the field and two-for-three from the charity stripe.  He grabbed four offensive and six defensive rebounds to go with his five assists, two steals, and one assist. His second double-double came in the Warriors' win over SF State in which he had 18 points and 12 rebounds.  
 
 
SHOOTER CHAVARIN:  Sophomore transfer Will Chavarin averaged 7.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in the Warriors' two games last week. Chavarin shot 71% from the field including 66% from threes including banking in a trey with five seconds left to seal the win for Stan State.  
            
RANKED IN THE CCAA:  Stan State is third in the CCAA rebounding (38.1 rpg) and defensive rebounding (26.9) while the Warriors are fourth in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.4%), treys made per game (7.6), offensive rebounding (111.3), and blocked shots per game (3.25).  Stan State is fifth in free throw percentage (72.6%) and steals per game (8.13).
 
Daniel Ameyaw is tied for second in blocked shots (eight), second in total rebounds (60), fifth in rebounds per game (7.5), and sixth in blocked shots per game (1.0).  Tony Singleton is second with his 16 treys, tied for third with his 2.0 treys made per game, and fourth with his 35.6% shooting from beyond the arc.  Micah Boon is tied for ninth with his eleven threes made.  
 
CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS:  The Toros have won six in a row since losing 81-58 to Western Washington to begin the season.  They defeated Sonoma State 59-55 and Cal State San Marcos 73-66 this weekend.  CSUDH is averaging 71.3 points per game and giving up 63.6 points per game.  The Toros are outrebounding their opponents 37.6 to 33.0.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Jeremy Dent-Smith (14.4 ppg), Jakob Alamudun (13.1 ppg), and Andrew Ball (11.4 ppg).  Alamudun is averaging a team high 7.1 rebounds per game to go with his team high 10 steals.  Jayden Winfrey has dished out a team high 16 assists and Alex Garcia has blocked a team high seven shots.  Dent-Smith leads the team with his 10 treys made and 43.5% shooting from the field.  Jordan Hilstock has connected on a team high 58.3% of his attempts from beyond the arc and Alamudun has made a team high 83% of his attempts from the line.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  The Toros lead the all-time series 16-12 with the two teams splitting the last six meetings.  Stan State won 66-65 in Carson on Jan. 26 with Jeremiah Jones leading the way with 14 points. The Toros won 68-56 in Turlock on Jan. 7.
 
CAL STATE LOS ANGELES:  The Golden Eagles enter the week with a 5-2 overall record and a 1-1 CCAA record after splitting their games this weekend.  CSULA won 76-65 at Cal State San  Marcos and lost 78-68 at Sonoma State.  The Golden Eagles are averaging 74.4 points per game while giving up 70.9 points per game. They are being outrebounded 40.9 to 28.9.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Shane Bell (13.1 ppg), Corey Cofield (12.1 ppg), and Dominic Escobar (11.1 ppg).  Cofield leads the team with his 5.6 rebounding average.  Bell is shooting a team high 52% from the field and leads the team with his 34 assists.  Escobar has recorded a team leading 20 steals and leads CSULA with his 100% shooting from the line.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State Los Angeles leads the all-time series with the Warriors 18-11.  Stan State has won three of the last five meetings.  The two teams split the series last year.  CSULA won 84-69 in Los Angeles on Feb. 9 with Mahda Fallay scoring 13 points.  The Warriors won 73-69 in Turlock on Dec. 3.

UP NEXT: After the Warriors' road trip to Los Angeles,  Stan State will have two more games before the end of the 2023 calendar year.  The Warriors will have an exhibition game in Stockton on Dec. 18 at 7pm against the University of the Pacific.  Their last game of the calendar year will be on New Year's Eve at 3pm against Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside before returning home on Jan. 4 for a 7:30pm match-up with Cal State San Marcos.
