Stan State Still Alive for Post Season with Four Games Left in Regular Season

TURLOCK, Calif.--- Even tough Stan State went 0-2 on the road last week in Southern California, the Warriors are still alive for one of the spots for the six-team 2022-23 CCAA Basketball Championships which will take place March 2-4 at Stan State.  Stan State is just one game out of the sixth spot and two out of the fourth spot.  The Warriors will host Cal State Monterey Bay this Thursday, February 16 at 7:30pm in their Annual Homecoming Game. Stan State will entertain SF State this Saturday, February 18 with tip-off scheduled for 3pm.  Prior to the game, the Warriors will recognize Kobe Ordonio in a Senior Day Ceremony.

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  Stan State is 9-15 overall and 7-11 in the CCAA.  The Warriors are averaging 67.9 points per game while giving up 72.4 points per game. They are being outrebounded 34.8 to 32.9.  Marlon Short leads the way with his 15.3 scoring average, 15 blocked shots and 47.4% shooting from the field.  Kobe Ordonio is second on the team in scoring with his 12.8 points per game average. Ordonio leads the team with his 79.7% shooting from the line and 43 three-point field goals made.  Benno Zecic is the Warrior leader with his 158 assists and 54 steals.  Will Pallesi has made a team high 32.3% of his attempts from beyond the arc.  Travion Williams leads Stan State with his 6.8 rebounding average. 

LAST GAMES:  Stan State went 0-2 on its road trip to Southern California this weekend.  The Warriors lost 84-68 at Cal State Los Angeles despite leading 41-33 at halftime.  Kobe Ordonio paced Stan State with 18 points while Mahda Fallay scored a career high 13 points off the bench.  Marlon Short added 12 points for Stan State.  The Warriors lost 85-54 at Cal State San Marcos on Saturday.  Ordonio led the Warriors with 13 points while Daniel Ameyaw adding 11 points.  Short chipped in 10 points and Benno Zecic dished out six assists and had two steals for Stan State.

CCAA TOURNAMENT HOPES:  Even though, Stan State is in a tie for tenth place with Cal State East Bay each with a 7-11 CCAA record.  The Warriors are still alive for a CCAA Championships Tournament berth.  They are one game out of fifth place which is held by SF State, Cal State Los Angeles, Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona.  The Warriors are two games out of fourth place (Sonoma State) and three games out of third place (Cal Poly Humboldt).  The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Basketball Championships which will be held March 2-4 at Fitzpatrick Arena on the campus of Stanislaus State.  The winner of the CCAA Basketball Championships will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.

SENIOR KOBE ORDONIO: Prior to Saturday afternoon's game with SF State, the Warriors will recognize their only senior in Kobe Ordonio. The senior transfer from Cal State San Bernardino is averaging 14.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.  He is shooting 41% from the field and has connected on 43 of his attempts from beyond the arc.  Ordonio has dished out 40 assists and recorded 31 steals in 24 games.  He has season highs of 28 points versus Sonoma State, nine rebounds vs. Cal State East Bay, six assists versus Cal Poly Humboldt, five steals versus Chico State, two blocked shots versus Cal State San Marcos, twelve field goals made versus Sonoma State and five three-point field goals made versus Cal State Ls Angeles. Earlier this season, he was named the CCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TRIO:  The trio of Marlon Short, Benno Zecic and Travion Williams each have recorded double-doubles this season.  Short has four in Academy of Art (Nov. 22, 21 points, 10 rebounds), at Chico State  (Nov. 26, 16 points, 10 rebounds), at Cal Poly Humboldt (Dec. 10, 18 points, 10 rebounds) and versus Cal State East Bay (Jan. 5, 19 points, 10 rebounds), Zecic has two against Cal State San Marcos (December 10 points, 10 assists) and against then No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino (Jan. 12, 10 points, 11 assists).  Williams' double-double came at Cal State Monterey Bay (Jan. 21, 11 points, 12 rebounds) and at Cal State Dominguez hills (Jan. 26, 11 points, 10 rebounds).  For their careers, Short has seven double doubles while Zecic and Williams each have two. 

MOVIN' ON UP: Benno Zecic is moving on up in the career and single season records at Stan State in assists and steals.  Heading into this Thursday, Zecic has 300 career assists and 158 assists this season.  His 300 assists in his career places him fourth on the career list.  He is twenty away from moving past Richard Seay into third place.  Ty Davis holds the career record with 380 while Brian Barnett is second with 378.  Zecic has 158 assists and 54 steals this season.  He is third on the single season list at Stan State and seven from moving past Rico Thompson into second place and 26 from breaking Seay's school record of 183.  His 54 steals place him seventh on the single season steal list.  The Alameda is four from being tied for fifth with Shaun Nunnery and Paul Graham and six from moving past Duane Jones into fourth place. 

14TH STRAIGHT GAME: Marlon Short scored 10 points on Saturday's game at Cal State San Marcos. This was his 14th straight game that Short has scored in double figures this season.  The Warrior sophomore has scored in double figures in all but two games this season.  He is averaging a team leading 15.3 points per game to go with his team high 15 blocked shots and 47.4% shooting from the field.

NATION'S LEADERS:  Benno Zecic is still in the top ten in the nation in NCAA Division II in assists and steals.  He is fifth in assists/game, sixth in total assists and ninth in steals.  Zecic is 11th in the nation in steals per game.  Travion Williams is averaging 3.5 offensive rebounds per game which places him 13th in the nation.

TOP HALF IN THE CCAA: Heading into Thursday's game with Cal State Monterey Bay, Stan State is in the top half of the conference in seven statistical categories.  The Warriors are third in steals (7.56 per game) and are tied for third in assist/turnover ratio (+1.06).  Stan State is fourth in turnover margin (+1.38) and assists per game (13.38).  They are sixth in scoring defense (72.4 points per game), three-point field goal percentage defense (35%) and offensive rebounds per game (10.6).

FOUR IN TOP 15 IN 13:  Kobe Ordonio, Marlon Short, Travion Williams and Benno Zecic are in the top 15 in the CCAA in 13 individual statistical categories. Zecic leads the CCAA in assists per game (6.6), total assists (158), total steals (54) and steals per game (2.3). He is tied for third in assist/turnover ratio (+2.0) and fifth in minutes per game (33.9). Williams is tied for the conference lead in offensive rebounds per game (3.5) while he is tied for seventh in rebounding (6.8).  He is tied for 13th in blocked shots per game (0.5) and total blocked shots (12).  Short is seventh in field goal percentage (47.4%), eighth in scoring (15.3), tenth in minutes per game (32.3), and 12th in blocked shots (15) and blocked shots per game (0.6).  Ordonio is tenth in scoring (14.4 points per game), 13th in three-point field goals made per game (1.8) and 14th in field goal percentage (41.3%).

OTTERS IN REVIEW: Cal State Monterey Bay is 9-13 overall and 7-10 in the CCAA.  The Otters are averaging 73 points per game while giving up 75 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 37.4 to 37.1.  Levi Frankland leads the way wit his 16.6 scoring average, 45% shooting from three-point range and 76.5% shooting from the line.  Joe Wall is averaging 13.6 points per game while connecting on a team high 77 three-point field goals and averaging a team leading 5.5 rebounds per game.  Jailen Nelson leads the team with his 27 steals, 69 assists and is third on the team with his 11.6 scoring average.  Jordan Archie is averaging 11.3 points per game while Jared Williams has blocked a team high 11 shots. 

LAST GAME/ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stanislaus State leads the all-time series with the Otters 19-17.  CSUMB has won the last three meetings including 80-74 on January 21 in Seaside this season.  Marlon Short paced the Warriors with 28 points with Kobe Ordonio chipping in 13 points.  Travion Williams had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Benno Zecic had nine points, seven assists and seven rebounds.  Joe Wall scored 24 points for the Otters and Levi Frankland chipped in 20 points.  The last Stan State victory was a 57-56 victory on January 23, 2020, in Turlock. 

GATORS IN REVIEW:  SF State is 12-12 overall and 8-10 in the CCAA.  The Gators are averaging 67.7 points per game while giving up 72.3 points per game.  They are outrebounding their opponents 37.5 to 36.4.  Eche Okeke leads the way with his 11.5 scoring, 6.5 rebounding average and 53% shooting from the field.  Jonah Roth is next on the team with his 10.8 scoring average.  Rother has blocked a team high 29 shots, made a team leading 43 three-point field goals and connected on a team high 36.4% of his attempts from beyond the arc.  Toby Okwuokei  and Jalen Flanagan are tied for the team lead each with a 10.0 scoring average.  Okwuokei leads SF State with his 61 assists and Flanagan is shooting a team high 82.7% from the line.  John Bakke has recorded a team high 27 steals.  

LAST GAME/ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stanislaus State leads the all-time series with the Gators 31-26.  SF State has won three of the last five meetings including 67-63 on January 19 in San Francisco.  Marlon Short had 18 points to lead Stan State with Travion Williams chipping in 13 points and Benno Zecic adding 10 points.  Jake Flanagan scored 14 points for the Gators.  The last Warrior win was on February 15, 2020, an 81-79 victory in Turlock.  Xavier Francois made the game-winning free throws with three seconds left in regulation.
