Crucial Road Games Ahead for Stan State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  With six games left in the regular season, Stan State Warriors are just a half-game out of the sixth and final spot for the CCAA Basketball Championship Tournament which will be held March 2-4 in Turlock, Calif., at Stan State's Fitzpatrick Arena.  The Warriors are just one game out of fifth place and two out of third place.  Stan State travels to Southern California for a pair of games. The Warriors will be at Cal State Los Angeles this Thursday, February 9 for a 7:30pm tip-off.  This Saturday, February 11, Stan State will be in San Marcos for a 3pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State San Marcos. 

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  Stan State enters this weekend with a 9-13 overall record including a 7-9 CCAA record.  The Warriors are averaging 68.5 points per game while giving up 71.3 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 35.2 to 32.9.  Marlon Short leads the way with his `15.7 scoring average, 15 blocked shots and 47.4% shooting from the field.  Kobe Ordonio is second on the team with his 12.8 scoring average and leads the team with his 40 three-point field goals made and 78.5% shooting from the line.  Benno Zecic has dished out a team high 148 assists and recorded a team leading 50 steals.  Travion Williams leads Stan State with his 6.8 rebounding average.  Will Pallesi leads the Warriors with his 34.1% shooting from three-point range. 

LAST GAMES:  Stan State went 1-1 last weekend at home against Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State.  The Warriors started the weekend with an 86-71 win over Cal Poly Humboldt keyed by Stan State's 42-23 domination of the boards. Travion Williams led the way with eight rebounds of which seven were offensive.  Marlon Short had a team high 23 points to go with his six rebounds and two steals. Benno Zecic scored 19 points, dished out nine assists, recorded five steals and grabbed four rebounds.  Baljot Sahi and Matt Bender each added nine points.  The Warriors finished the weekend with an 81-78 nail biter loss to Sonoma State on Saturday despite Kobe Ordonio's career high 28 points.  Ordonio shot 12-for-18 from the field including going four-for-nine from three-point land.  Short chipped in 19 points while Zecic had eight assists and five steals.  Jeremiah Jones scored eight points on his two-for-two shooting from three-point land and two-for-three shooting from the line. 

CCAA TOURNAMENT HOPES:  Stan State is in a tie for eighth place with SF State each with a 7-9 record in the CCAA.  The Warriors are just a half-game out of the sixth spot which is held by Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay.  They are one game out of the fifth spot which is held by Chico State and two out of third place (Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State).   The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Basketball Championships which will be held March 2-4 at Fitzpatrick Arena on the campus of Stanislaus State.  The winner of the CCAA Basketball Championships will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. 

TWELFTH STRAIGHT GAME:  Marlon Short recorded his 11th and 12th straight games of scoring in double digits.  Short has scored in double digits in all but two games this season.  He has scored at least 20-points in four games including a career high 28 points at Cal State Monterey Bay on January 21.  Short leads the team with his 15.7 scoring average, blocked 14 shots and 47.4% shooting from the field.  The sophomore guard has dished out 27 assists and recorded 29 steals.  He is shooting 75% from the line while averaging 5.6 rebounds per game.

CAREER NIGHTKobe Ordonio scored a career high 28 points in the Warriors' game versus Sonoma State on Saturday. He went 12-for-18 from the field including connecting on four of his nine attempts from beyond the arc.  Ordonio is second on the team with his 14.3 scoring average and leads the team with his 40 three-point field goals made.  Besides those numbers, Ordonio is shooting a team leading 78.5% from the line go with his 31 steals and 37 assists. 

BOMBS AWAY: Baljot Sahi has been a spark off the bench for the Warriors in their last two games.  He has gone a combined five-for-six from beyond the arc in 13 minutes.  Against Cal Poly Humboldt, Sahi went three-for-four and then against Sonoma State he went two-for-two.  For the season, he has scored 34 points while shooting 53.3% from three-point range.  He also has three assists and three steals in seven games. 

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TRIO:  The trio of Marlon Short, Benno Zecic and Travion Williams each have recorded double-doubles this season.  Short has four in Academy of Art (Nov. 22, 21 points, 10 rebounds), at Chico State  (Nov. 26, 16 points, 10 rebounds), at Cal Poly Humboldt (Dec. 10, 18 points, 10 rebounds) and versus Cal State East Bay (Jan. 5, 19 points, 10 rebounds), Zecic has two against Cal State San Marcos (December 10 points, 10 assists) and against then No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino (Jan. 12, 10 points, 11 assists).  Williams' double-double came at Cal State Monterey Bay (Jan. 21, 11 points, 12 rebounds) and at Cal State Dominguez hills (Jan. 26, 11 points, 10 rebounds).  For their careers, Short has seven double-doubles while Zecic and Williams each have two. 

MOVIN' ON UP:Benno Zecic is third on the Warriors' single season list with 148 assists.  He Is 17 from moving past Rico Thompson into second place and 36 from moving past Richard Seay into first place.  For his career, Zecic has 290 assists which is fifth on the Warrior career list.  He is just seven from moving past Sam Marcus into fourth place.  The top three career assists leader at Stan State are 1.) Ty Davis 380, 2.) Brian Barnett 378 and 3.) Richard Seay 319.  Zecic is also tied for ninth with Matt Muniz with his 50 steals this season.  He is two from eighth and four from seventh.    

DUO OF ZECIC & WILLIAMS IN TOP TEN:   Stan State due of Benno Zecic and Travion Williams is in the top 15 in the nation in NCAA Division II in five statistical categories.  Zecic is third with his 6.7 assists per game average, seventh with his 148 total assists, tenth with his 50 total steals and 11th with his 2.27 steals per game average.    Williams is eighth with his 3.65 offensive rebounds per game average.  Florida Tech's Sesan Russell leads the nation with his 7.0 assists per game average and Lincoln Memorial's Chase Rankin has a nation leading 159 assists.  Catawba's Javeon Jones has recorded a nation leading 60 steals and 3.00 steals per game average.  Lincoln's (MO) Kevin Kone is averaging a team leading 5.00 offensive rebounds per game. 

TOP HALF IN THE CCAA: As a team, Stan State is third in the CCAA in turnover margin (+2.27) and assist/turnover ratio (+1.10).  The Warriors are fourth with their 13.59 assists per game average and 71.3 scoring defense.  They are sixth in three-point field goal percentage defense (34.2%) and offensive rebounds per game (10.8).    

TOP 15 IN THE CCAA:  Five Warriors in Kobe Ordonio, Will Pallesi, Marlon Short, Travion Williams and Benno Zecic are in the top 15 in the CCAA in several statistical categories. Zecic leads the CCAA in assists, assists per game, steals, steals per game and is third in assist/turnover ratio and fifth in minutes played.  Short is seventh in field goal percentage, eighth in scoring and minutes played, tied for tenth in steals, blocked shots and blocked shots per game and 12th in steals per game.  Ordonio is seventh in steals, ninth in steals per game, tenth in scoring, tied for 13th in three-point field goals made per game and 15th in minutes.  Williams leads the CCAA in offensive rebounding.  He is tied for sixth in rebounding and tied for thirteenth in in blocked shots and blocked shots per game. 

GOLDEN EAGLES IN REVIEW: Cal State Los Angeles is 9-13 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA after going 3-7 in its last ten games including dropping both games this weekend 67-61 at San Francisco State and 89-84 (OT) at Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Golden Eagles are averaging 70.4 points per game while giving up 72.6 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 38.6 to 29.7.  Five players are averaging double digits in scoring in Alexander Sokol (14.6 ppg), Adrease Jackson (14.3 ppg), Shane Bell (14.2 ppg), Dominic Escobar (12.9 ppg) and Payton Moore (11.4 ppg).  Jared Pearre leads the team with his 6.0 rebounding average and 35 blocked shots.  Sokol has connected on a team high 70 three-point field goals while  Bell leads CSULA with his 29 steals and 45.8% shooting from beyond the arc.  Sokol is shooting a team best 81.2% from the line and Bell is shooting a team leading 53.2% from the field. Payton Moore has dished out a team high 62 assists. 

LAST TIME/SERIES:  Cal State Los Angeles leads the all-time series with the Warriors 19-11.  Stan State has won three of the last five meetings including 73-69 on December 3 in Turlock earlier this season.  Kobe Ordonio paced the Warriors with 23 points and four steals.  Marlon Short chipped in 18 points while Will Pallesi added 13 points.  The last Warrior win in Los Angeles was a 62-60 win on February 18, 2022, as Tony Singleton scored 14 points and Benno Zecic scored 11 points.

COUGARS IN REVIEW: Cal State San Marcos is 13-8 overall and 12-4 in the CCAA.  The Cougars are 7-3 in their last ten games while splitting their games this weekend defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 72-71 and losing 64-62 to San Francisco State on the road.  They are averaging 70.5 points per game while giving up 66.8 points per game.  The Cougars are being outrebounded 33.8 to 30.2.  Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Greg Milton III (18.5 ppg), Joel Mensah (12.9 ppg), Quinn Denker (11.8 ppg) and Zack Perlstein (10.5 ppg).  Mensah leads the team with his 7.9 rebounding average, 18 blocked shots and 57.% shooting from the field.  Milton has made a team high 44 three-point field goals and shot a team high 44% from beyond the arc. Denker leads CSUSM with his 93.5% shooting from the line.  Jayce McCain has dished out a team high 78 assists with a team leading 29 steals.

LAST TIME/SERIES:  Cal State San Marcos leads the all-time series with the Warriors 8-3.  CSUSM won three of the last five meetings including 75-69 on December 1 in Turlock.  Will Pallesi paced the Warriors with 17 points while Kobe Ordonio chipped in 16 points. Marlon Short added 12 points while Benno Zecic had his first double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.  The last Stan State win was a 56-53 victory in Turlock on January 11, 2020.  Stan State defeated the Cougars for the only time on February 2, 2019, a 74-65 victory.
