TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State men's basketball team will return to The Fitz this Thursday and Saturday, January 4 and 6 for a pair of CCAA games against Cal State San Marcos and Sonoma State. The Warriors will face Cal State San Marcos this Thursday at 7:30pm and Sonoma State this Saturday at 3pm.
WARRIORS: Stan State is 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the CCAA enter this weekend's two home games. The Warriors are averaging 69.4 points per game while giving up 72.4 points per game.
John Wade III leads the way with 12.8 points per game average followed by
Dontrell Hewlett with a 12.7 average.
Daniel Ameyaw leads the team with his 50.6% shooting from the field, 10 blocked shots, and 8.9 rebounding average.
Tony Singleton has connected on a team high 28 treys and shooting a team leading 40% from three-point range. Wade leads the team with his 20 steals, 30 assists, and 76.2% shooting from the line.
STAN STATE HEAD COACH PAUL TREVOR: Coach Trevor enters his seventh year as the head coach at Stan State and 14
th year overall coaching. He is 175-163 in his fourteen years including 68-77 on the sidelines in Turlock. During his 14-year coaching career, Trevor has coached 27 All-CCAA honorees including eight First Team selections and one CCAA Newcomer of the Year. Two players have been named to the preseason All-American Teams with one receiving All-American honors and three All-Region honors. In 2016-17 at SF State, he guided the Gators the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in 23 years and he was named the NABC West Region Co-Coach of the Year while the Gators were ranked No. 22 in the end of the season national NABC rankings.
LAST TIME OUT: Stan State lost a 63-62 nail biter at Cal State Monterey Bay on New Year's Eve despite
Dontrell Hewlett's 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steal performance. The Warriors held the Otters to just 42% shooting from the field including just 20% from beyond the arc. They also forced 20 turnovers and converted them into 19 points. 13 of those turnovers came on steals with four coming from Hewlett and three from
John Wade III.
TRIO OF DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Daniel Ameyaw recorded his first double-double as a Warrior in Stan State's 82-77 victory over Western Oregon in Rohnert Park, Nov. 17. Ameyaw was four-for-seven from the field and two-for-three from the charity stripe. He grabbed four offensive and six defensive rebounds to go with his five assists, two steals, and one assist. His second double-double came in the Warriors' win over SF State in which he had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ameyaw's third double-double came in the Warriors' 95-83 loss at Cal State Los Angeles. He scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
NATIONALLY RANKED: Daniel Ameyaw is 34
th in the nation with his 8.9 rebounding average.
RANKED IN THE CCAA: Stan State is second in the CCAA in rebounding (38.7) and offense rebounding (11.9). The Warriors are fourth in defensive rebounding (26.8), steals (7.91), three-point field goal percentage defense (30.5%), and free throw percentage (72.5%). They are sixth in three-point field goals made per game (7.6).
John Wade III is third in the CCAA in steals per game (2.0) and fifth in total steals (20), assist/turnover ratio (+1.2), and assists per game (3.0). Wade is sixth in total assists (30) and ninth in free throw percentage (76.2%).
Daniel Ameyaw is second in rebounding (8.9 rebounds per game), third in total rebounds (98), and seventh in blocked shots per game (0.9) and total blocked shots (10).
Tony Singleton leads the CCAA in treys made (28) and three-point field goals made per game (2.5) and second with his 40.6% shooting from beyond the arc.
CAL STATE SAN MARCOS: The Cougars are 4-7 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA after defeating Sonoma State 78-69 in San Marcos on New Year's Eve. They have won three of their last five games with their two losses being road non-conference losses to Central Washington (81-78 overtime) and Seattle Pacific (73-66). CSUSM is averaging 70.1 points per game while giving up 68.5 points per game. The Cougars are being outrebounded 38.5 to 30.7. Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Charlie Henderson (13.5 ppg), Edwyn Collins (12.1 ppg), and Camren Pierce (11.7 ppg). Henderson leads the team with his 7.4 rebounding average, 55% shooting from the field, and 13 blocked shots.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Cal State San Marcos leads the all-time series with the Warriors 9-3 and have won the last four meetings. Stan State last defeated CSUSM 66-53 on Jan. 11, 2020, in Turlock. Last season, CSUSM defeated the Warriors 75-69 in Turlock on Dec. 1, 2022, and 88-54 in San Marcos on Feb. 11, 2023.
SONOMA STATE: The Seawolves are 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA after losing 78-59 at Cal State San Marcos on New Year's Eve. They have won three of their last five games. Sonoma State is averaging 68.8 points per game while giving up 66.7 points per game. The Seawolves are outrebounding their opponents 33.5 to 32.8. Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Andrew Henderson (13.1 ppg), Cameron Barry (11.2 ppg), James Nobles (10.3 ppg), and Dillon Iyawe (10.1 ppg). Henderson leads the team with his 16 treys made, 34% shooting from three-point land and 7.2 rebounding average. Damien Miller has a team leading 24 assists while Barry has a team high 18 steals. Iyawe leads the team with his 13 blocked shots and 59% shooting from the field.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Stan State leads the all-time series 25-17, but Stan State has won three of the last five meetings. The Seawolves won both games last season 80-46 on Dec. 8, 2022, in Rohnert Park and 81-78 in Turlock on Feb. 4, 2023. The Warriors won both games in 2021-22. They defeated the Seawolves 76-55 on Dec. 18, 2021, in Turlock behind
Tony Singleton's 20 points. Stan State won 70-59 on Jan. 27, 2022, in Rohnert Park behind Singleton's 13 points.
