Softball Begins Season at Concordia Kickoff Classic

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State begins its 2024 regular season this weekend at the Concordia Kickoff Classic at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif.  The Warriors will face No. 25 Northwest Nazarene (Feb. 2, 2pm), Chaminade (Feb. 2, 6:30pm), Biola (Feb. 3, 1:30pm), Azusa Pacific (Feb. 3, 6:30pm), and Colorado Christian (Feb. 3, 11:30am).  
 
WARRIORS:  Stan State finished the 2023 campaign with a 13-32 overall record and a 7-28 CC AA record.  Mikaela Ferreira will return for her senior season after being named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year.  The First Team All-CCAA honoree earned NFCA and D2CCA All-Region Second Team honors.  She hit .389 with eleven extra-base hits including eight doubles while scoring 15 times and driving in 13 runs.  Victoria Alarcon is back after picking four victories in the circle and posting a 2.32 earned run average.  N
 
#25 NORTHWEST NAZARENE:  The Nighthawks finished the 2023 campaign with a 39-17 overall record and a 21-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) record.  They are picked to win the GNAC for the fourth straight season.  They return four All-GNAC players in Sidney Booth, Abigail Gagnon, Clarissa Moreno, and Jami Obringer.  Since 2014, the series between the two teams is tied at 2-2.  NNU lost 3-1 to Chaminade in the NCAA Division II West Regionals.  The Nighthawks won last year's meeting 1-0 in Turlock.  Stan State defeated NNU 7-1 in Turlock in 2019.  
 
CHAMINADE:  The Silverswords went 22-24 last season including 14-17 in the PacWest.  Chasity McKean and Kealoni Takemura-Brehme were named to the Preseason All-PacWest Team.  McKean was a Second Team All-Conference honoree after hitting .331.  Since 2008, Stan State leads the all-time series with the Silverswords 9-0.  The Warriors defeated Chaminade 7-6 in Turlock in 2023.
 
BIOLA:  The Eagles went 29-24 last season including 19-11 in the PacWest.  They advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regionals and lost to Northwest Nazarene 3-2.  Raylene Roybal and Allie Beck were named to the PacWest Preseason Team.  Roybal was a First Team All-PacWest selection and was a Rawlings/NFCA Gold Glove recipient. Since 2020, Biola leads the all-time series with Stan State 1-0 with defeating the Warriors 8-0 in 2020 in Irvine.
 
AZUSA PACIFIC:  The Cougars went 34-26 in 2023 including 18-14 in the PacWest.  They received a bid to the NCAA Division II West Regional and lost 7-1 to Cal State San Marcos in the championship game.  Since 1987, Azusa Pacific leads the all-time series with the Warriors 5-4.  The Cougars defeated Stan State 5-2 in Turlock in 2023.  The Cougars are picked to finish second in the PacWest.  Katie Korstrom was the Preseason Co-Player of the Year.  Caatlin DeCanio was named to the preseason team.  Korstrom was Frist Team All-Region honoree while DeCanio was an all-conference honoree in 2023.
 
COLORADO CHRISTIAN:  The Cougars went 57-6 in 2023 including 42-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  They lost 10-0 to West Texas A&M in the NCAA Regionals in Texas. Four All-RMAC honorees are back in Kenzie Middleton, Sami Edwards, Logan Menzies, and Kayla Middleton.  Kenzie was the RMAC Player of the year as well as the Region Player of the Year and a First Team All-American honoree.  This is the first ever meeting between the two teams.

UP NEXT:  Stan State will return to the diamond after this weekend's tournament in the North Bay when the Warriors play in the North Bay Challenge.  They will face Academy of Art on Feb. 10 at 12:30pm in Rohnert Park and Saint Martin's and Dominican on Feb. 11 at 10am and 12:30pm respectively in San Rafael.  Stan State's home opener is set for Feb. 16 at noon for a CCAA doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos.
