Stan State Returns to the Road for a Pair of Conference Games in Northern California

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State returns to the road for a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games this Thursday and Saturday, January 11 and 13.  The Warriors will be in Chico this Thursday for a match-up with the Chico State Wildcats.  They will continue their trip on Saturday in Arcata to face Cal Poly Humboldt.  Both games are scheduled for a 5:30pm tip-off.  
 
STAN STATE IN REVIEW:  The Warriors are 10-7 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA after going 1-2 this past week.  They are averaging 65.4 points per game while giving up 65.1 points per game.  Stan State is being outrebounded 41.5 to 38.9. Mya Blake leads the way with her 13.5 scoring average followed by Liliana Marques' 11.3 average.  Taylor Pilot leads the Warriors with her 5.9 rebounding average, 53 assists, and 35 steals.  Aunika Hornung has blocked a team high 19 shots while Marques has made a team high 30 treys.  Marques leads the team with her 82.1% shooting from the line.  Lyric Richardson is shooting a team best 54.2% from the field and Jadyn Patterson has made a team high 41.7% of her attempts from beyond the arc.  
 
STAN STATE HEAD COACH WAYMAN STRICKLAND: Coach Strickland enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Warrior women's basketball team.  Strickland is 120-169 in his coaching stint at Stan State and the second winningest coach with his 120 victories. In 2013-14, he led the Warriors to one of the best turn-around seasons in program history, going from 2-25 to 13-13 and just missing out on the CCAA tournament.  In February of 2017, the Warriors posted their first postseason victory since 1990 and advanced to the CCAA semifinals.  He has coached 23 All-CCAA honorees including two First Team selections.  Zahria Hendrix (2017-18) and Ana Burch (2013-14) were CCAA Freshman of the Year honorees.  Prior to his arrival on the CSU Stanislaus campus, Strickland was the assistant coach for the women's basketball program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton between 2009 and 2012. Before his at Delta College, Strickland was the varsity girls coach (2007-09) and varsity boys assistant coach (2002-07) at Stockton's Edison High School.  Strickland spent nine years as a professional player in Europe and Asia.  His accolades include being named the top point guard in the Asian Basketball Championships three times (1996-98). He was the most valuable player of the 1997 Asian Basketball Championships. He was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego from 1988 to 1992, when he amassed 1,040 career points. Currently, he still holds the third spot in the USD record book with 408 assists.

LAST WEEK:  The Warriors went 1-2 in their three games last week.  They started with a 78-73 victory at Cal State Monterey Bay on New Year's Eve.  Stan State came back home and lost to Cal State San Marcos 70-60 and 68-54 to Sonoma State.  Two Warriors averaged double figures in scoring in Mya Blake (17.3 ppg), and Jadyn Patterson (10.3 ppg).  Blake went 16-for-18 from the line and recorded nine steals.  Taylor Pilot dished out 12 assists while Aunika Hornung blocked five shots.  Both Blake and Patterson each made six treys.
 
THREE-WAY TIE FOR SECOND PLACE:  After starting the 2023-24 undefeated in CCAA play with a 5-0 record, the Warriors dropped both games to begin the New Year to fall to 5-2.  Stan State fell into a three-way tie for second place with Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State.  The Warriors are one game out of first place, Cal State San Marcos (6-1).  They are one game fifth place, Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino, 4-3.    
 
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Three Warriors have recorded double-doubles this season in Taylor Pilot, Joia Armstrong, and Lyric Richardson.   Pilot recorded a double-double in the Warriors' game versus Simon Fraser on Nov. 18.  Pilot scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.  Armstrong recorded her first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game at Hawai'i Pacific on Nov. 21.  She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds.  She went 10-for-16 from the field, blocked five shots and made her only attempt from beyond the arc. Richardson recorded her first double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) in the Warriors' victory over Cal State East Bay on Nov. 30, 2022.  She went five-for-ten from the field to go with her two steals and two blocked shots.  Her second double-double came in Stan State's victory at CSUMB on New Year's Eve with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  She was perfect from the field going five-for-five.  
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:  Stan State junior transfer Mya Blake was named to the Warrior Classic that took place Nov. 17-18 at The Fitzpatrick Arena.  Blake led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend while averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.  She had a +2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the Warriors' two games.  For the weekend, Blake shot 46% from the field including connecting on two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.  She was a perfect two-for-two from the line.  Liliana Marques was named to the 2023 Outrigger Hoops in Hawai'i Classic All-Tournament Team. Marques averaged 19.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in the Warriors' two games in the classic including scoring a career high 25 points in Stan State's game versus Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Marques shot 48% from the field including 52.6% (10-for-19) from three-point land.  The Sacramento native was four-for-six from the line to go with her three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.  
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  As a team, the Warriors are 36th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (34.8%).  Taylor Pilot is 42nd with her 35 total steals.  
 
CCAA LEADERS:  Stan State is third in the CCAA in field goal percentage defense (36.9%) and blocked shots per game (3.71).  The Warriors are fifth in scoring defense (65.1 ppg) and offensive rebounds per game (13.6).  They are sixth in steals per game (9.76), three-point field goal percentage defense (29.6%), three-point field goals made per game (6.5), and turnover margin (+1.0).
 
Mya Blake is third in steals (30), seventh in treys made (27), seventh in steals per game (2.0), eighth in assists (36), ninth in scoring (13.5 ppg), treys made per game (1.8), and tenth in field goal percentage (40.7%).  Taylor Pilot is second in steals (35), third in assists (53), third in steals per game (2.5), fifth in assists (38), and fifth in assist/turnover ratio (+1.3).  Liliana Marques is sixth in treys (30) and tenth in treys made per game (1.8) while Joia Armstrong is eighth with her 13 blocked shots.  
 
WILDCATS IN REVIEW:  Chico State is 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA and have won five games in a row including last week defeating San Francisco State 91-72 and Cal State East Bay 69-55 on the road.  The Wildcats are averaging 75.5 points per game while giving up 64.5 points per game.  They are outrebounding their opponents 39.2 to 35.8.  Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Zhane Duckett (15.3 ppg), Brandy Huffhines (12.5 ppg), Makenzie LaPorte (11.8 ppg), and Jordan Allred (10.4 ppg).  Ashleigh Barr leads the team with her 5.8 rebounding average and nine  blocked shots.  Duckett has dished out a team high 71 assists and recorded a team high 29 steals.  She also leads the team with her 55.4% shooting from the field.  Huffhines is shooting a team best 85.2% from the line and 24 treys made.  Morgan Mathis has made a team leading 51.1% of her attempts from beyond the arc.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Chico State leads the all-time series with the Warriors 19-10 since 2007 and has won four of the five last five meetings.  The Wildcats won both games last season 85-70 on Nov. 26, 2022, in Turlock.  Joia Armstrong led the Warriors with 14 points.  Chico State defeated Stan State 64-62 in Turlock on New Year's Day in 2023.  Ashmeen Sran had 14 points to lead Stan State.  The last Warriors' victory was a 68-64 win on Nov. 27, 2021, in Turlock.  Current assistant coach Kyanna Davis paced Stan State with 27 points.  The last Stan State win in Chico was a 71-66 victory on Nov. 21, 2019.  Davis led the Warriors with 20 points.  
 
'JACKS IN REVIEW:  Cal Poly Humboldt is 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the CCAA after losing five of its last six games.  The 'Jacks defeated San Francisco State in San Francisco 65-33 on Saturday.  They are averaging 58.6 points per game while averaging 61.8 points per game.  Humboldt is averaging 36.5 rebounds per game while its opponents are averaging 36.5 rebounds per game.  Emilia Long leads the team with her 14.0 scoring average, 40 steals, and 40 assists.  Sara Ahmadpour is averaging a team high 5.1 rebounds per game and shooting a team high 87.5% from the line.  Marley Johnson leads the team with her 10 blocked shots and 30 treys made.  Jadis Watson is shooting a team leading 46.8% from the field.   
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  The 'Jacks leads the all-time series 25-8 including winning three of the last five meetings.  They defeated Stan State 77-52 in Arcata on Dec. 10, 2022, and 61-45 in Turlock on Feb. 2, 2023.  The last Warrior victory was on Dec. 11, 2021, 51-45 in Turlock with Kyanna Davis scoring 17 points.  Stan State's last win in Arcata was on Jan. 9, 2016, 78-59  with current assistant coach Riley Holladay scoring 13 points and dishing out four assists.
