Men’s Basketball to Begin the New Year Hosting Cal Poly Humboldt and Chico State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State returns to Fitzpatrick Arena in the New Year, January 2 and 4, after being off since a 68-68 overtime victory at Cal State Monterey  December 21.  The Warriors will host Cal Poly Humboldt this Thursday, January 2 at 7:30 p.m. Stan State will face Chico State at 3:00 p.m. on City of Turlock Day this Saturday, January 4.

LAST TIME:  Stan State defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 69-68 in overtime on December 21.  The Warriors trailed 43-32 with twelve minutes left in the second half and went on a 22-3 run to take a 54-46 lead with just 1:45 to go in regulation.  CSUMB outscored the Warriors 13-5 in the final 105 seconds to tie the game at 59-59 to send the game into overtime.  Stan State outscored the Otters 10-9 including William Chavarin's game-winning free throws to take the road victory 69-68 in the extra period.  Chavarin finished with a career high 18 points while Cameron Walker chipped in 12 points and Jason Cibull added 11 points. 

WARRIORS:  Stan State enters the New Year with a 5-5 overall record and a 2-2 CCAA record.  The Warriors are averaging 72.8 points per game while giving up 72.6 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 36.3 to 33.6.  Jeremiah Jones leads the team with his 18.9 scoring averaging, 53% shooting from the field, 77.8% shooting from the line, and 31 assists.  Daniel Ameyaw is averaging a team high 7.6 rebounds per game to go with his team high six blocked shots and 8.6 scoring average.  Jason Zimmer is shooting a team leading 53.1% from beyond the arc and has made a team high 17 threes.  Jonathan Tchengang leads Stan State with his 19 steals. 

4-2:  The Warriors are 4-2 when they have dished out more assists than turning the ball over this season after their first ten games.  Their only win with more turnovers than assists was their last win 69-68 in overtime at Cal State Monterey Bay (12 assists, 15 turnovers). Their victories were against Fresno Pacific (13 assists, eight turnovers), Western Oregon (15 assists, 6 turnovers), Hawai'i Pacific (10 assists, 6 turnovers), and Cal State Monterey Bay (11 assists, 6 turnovers). 

4-1:  Stan State is 4-1 when the Warriors have scored 70 points in a game.  The Warriors' only loss when scored more than 70 points was an 86-83 overtime loss at home to UC Merced.  Their four victories are Fresno Pacific (74-62), Western Oregon (94-88), Hawai'i Pacific (75-67), and Cal State Monterey Bay (90-79).  Stan State's only victory when scoring less than 70 points was its 69-68 overtime victory at Cal State Monterey Bay. 

JJ:  Jeremiah Jones has scored in double digits in all nine game he has played in this season.  He had a career high 33 points in Stan State's victory over Western Oregon (Nov. 15).  Jones has scored 20 or more points three times this season and twice in his last three games.  He leads the team with his 18.9 scoring average, 31 assists, and 77.8% shooting from the line. 

DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Daniel Ameyaw recorded his first double-double and fourth of his career with a 16-point, 11-rebound performance in the Warriors' victory over CSUMB on Nov. 30.  He was seven-for-12 from the field and went two-for-four from the line. Ameyaw blocked two shots and added a steal in 31 minutes.  For the season, Ameyaw is averaging 8.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game with a team high six blocked shots.

MORE A'S THAN T'S:  Stan Sate has dished out 124 assists with 101 turnovers this season for a +1.23 assist/turnover ratio. Six Warriors have a positive assist to turnover ratio.  Jason Cibull has 19 assists with only two turnovers followed by William Chavarin with 16 assists and eight turnovers.  Jeremiah Jones has 31 assists and 14 turnovers followed by Fabian Reichstadt (five assists, two turnovers), and Jordan Smith (four assists, three turnovers).

14.7/6.8:  The Warriors are forcing 14.7 turnovers per game by their opponents while recording 6.8 steals per game.  Jonathan Tchengang leads the way with his 19 steals followed by William Chavarin with 10 and Jeremiah Jones and Cameron Walker each with nine while Jordan Smith has seven. 

NATIONALLY RANKED:  As a team, the Warriors are 14th in the nation with their 10.1 turnovers per game.  They are 25th in turnover margin with a +4.6. 

CCAA STATS:  Stan State is in the top half of the CCAA in seven team statistical categories.  The Warriors are second in the CCAA in turnover margin (+4.6), third in assist/turnover ratio (+1.23), and tied for third in threes made per game (7.2).  They are fourth in three-point field goal percentage (34.6%), fifth in scoring defense (72.6), tied for fifth in offensive rebounding (11.5), and sixth in rebounding (33.6).  Four Warriors in Daniel Ameyaw, Jeremiah Jones, Jonathan Tchengang, and Jason Zimmer are in the top half of the conference in seven individual statistical categories.  Jones leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio (+2.2), second in scoring (18.9), second in field goal percentage (53%), and sixth in assists/game (3.4).  Daniel Ameyaw is third in rebounding (7.6), Jonathan Tchengang is eighth in steals/game (1.9), and Jason Zimmer is eighth in threes/game (1.7).

COACH TREVOR:  With the Warriors' victory over CSU Monterey Bay on November 30 at home, Coach Paul Trevor moved into fourth place on the Warrior coaching wins list. Heading into the New Year, Coach Trevor is 77-95 on the sidelines at Stan State.  For his 14-year career at Stan State and San Francisco State is 184-181.

SERIES SWEEP: With Stan State's victory over Cal State Monterey Bay, Dec. 21, the Warriors swept the season series from the Otters.  This was Stan State's first CCAA season series sweep since taking the two games from Cal Poly Pomona during the 2022-23 season (70-62 in Turlock and 70-67 in Pomona).

LUMBERJACKS IN REVIEW: Cal Poly Humboldt enters its game at Stan State with a 5-4 overall record and a 1-3 CCAA Record.  The Lumberjacks are 2-3 in their last five games with an 83-69 home win over San Francisco State and a 79-73 road non-conference win over Westmont.  They are averaging 81.3 points per game while giving up 75.6 points per game.  Humboldt is outrebounding its opponents 36.6 to 31.3.  Four 'Jacks are averaging double digits in scoring in Rob Diaz III (16.1 ppg), Josiah Sanders (13.6 ppg), Kalib LaCount (11.6 ppg), and Aidan Fowler (11.2 ppg).  Kyle Frelow leads Humboldt with his 8.3 rebounding average and 61.8% shooting from the field.  Sanders and LaCount each have made a team leading 40.7% of their attempts from beyond the arc.  Diaz has made a team leading 14 treys. LaCount leads the team with his 47 assists and 22 steals.  Sanders has blocked a team high 14 shots. Fowler leads the team with his 91.7% shooting from the line.      

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. HUMBOLDT: Cal Poly Humboldt leads the all-time series with the Warriors 24-11 since 2007. Stan State has won three of the last five meetings.  The two teams split the series last year with each team winning on the other's home court.  Stan State won 79-62 in Arcata on Jan. 13, 2024, with Daniel Ameyaw scoring eight points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  Humboldt won 72-65 in Turlock on Feb. 15, 2024.  Cam Walker had 11 points for the Warriors.  The last Warrior win over the 'Jacks in Turlock was 86-71 on Feb. 2, 2023.    

WILDCATS IN REVIEW:  Chico State enters its game at Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday with an 8-2 record and a 4-0 CCAA record.  The Wildcats are on an eight-game winning streak since losing 105-81 at Academy of Art on Nov. 16.  They are averaging 81.5 points per game while giving up 73.1 points per game.  Chico is outrebounding its opponents 33.6 to 30.7.  Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Jojo Murphy (20.1 ppg), Isaiah Kerr (13.1 ppg), Miles Daniels (12.4 ppg), and Trae Taylor (10.5 ppg).  Daniels is averaging a team leading 5.2 rebounds per game while recording a team high 23 steals and dishing out a team leading 44 assists. Taylor is shooting a team high 68.9% from the field to go with his team leading nine blocked shots.  Murphy has made a team high 21 threes and leads Chico with his 80% shooting from the line.  Kerr has connected on a team leading 42.9% of his attempts from beyond the arc. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CHICO:  Since 1988, Chico State leads the series with the Warriors 47-32.  The Wildcats are 7-3 in the last ten meetings, but the two teams have split the last four meetings.  Stan State defeated the Wildcats 73-69 in Turlock on Feb. 17, 2024.  Jeremiah Jones had 13 points and Mahda Fallay added 10 points for the Warriors.  Chico State defeated the Warriors 84-56 in Chico on Jan. 11, 2024.  Daniel Ameyaw and Jones each had 10 points for Stan State.

UP NEXT:  Stan State travel to the Bay Area for a pair of games after hosting Chico State this Saturday, Jan. 4.  The Warriors will be in San Francisco for a game on Jan. 9 with the SF State Gators.  They will finish the weekend with a game in Hayward on Jan. 11 for a game with Cal State East Bay.  Both tip-offs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. This will be the beginning of a four-game road trip for the Warriors as the following weekend, Stan State will be at No. 18 Cal State San Bernardino (Jan. 16) and No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona (Jan. 18).  They will return home to host Sonoma State, Jan. 23.
