TURLOCK, Calif.--- Heading into the final seven games of the regular season, Stan State sits in a tie for fourth place in the CCAA standings with Cal Poly Humboldt each tied with an 8-7 conference record. The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the 2023-24 CCAA Basketball Championships, March 7-9, in San Bernardino, Calif. The Warriors will be on the road this weekend at Sonoma State (Feb. 8 at 5:30pm) and Cal State San Marcos (Feb. 10 at 1pm).
STAN STATE IN REVIEW: The Warriors enter this weekend's games with an 13-12 overall record and an 8-7 CCAA record. They sit in a tie for fourth place with Cal Poly Humboldt, two games out of third place (Cal Poly Pomona), and three games out of second place (Chico State). Stan State is averaging 64.8 points per games while giving up 65.3 points per game. The Warriors are being outrebounded 40.6 to 40.1.
Mya Blake leads the team with her 14.7 scoring average, 41 treys, and 52 steals.
Taylor Pilot and
Aunika Hornung each are averaging a team leading 5.6 rebounds per game. Pilot leads the team with her 78 assists while Hornung has blocked a team high 26 shots.
Lyric Richardson leads Stan State with her 53.3% shooting from the field and
Liliana Marques is shooting a team high 82% from the line.
Asha Walker is shooting a team high 38% from three-point land.
STAN STATE HEAD COACH WAYMAN STRICKLAND: Coach Strickland enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Warrior women's basketball team. Strickland is 123-174 in his coaching stint at Stan State and the second winningest coach with his 120 victories. In 2013-14, he led the Warriors to one of the best turn-around seasons in program history, going from 2-25 to 13-13 and just missing out on the CCAA tournament. In February of 2017, the Warriors posted their first postseason victory since 1990 and advanced to the CCAA semifinals. He has coached 23 All-CCAA honorees including two First Team selections. Zahria Hendrix (2017-18) and Ana Burch (2013-14) were CCAA Freshman of the Year honorees. Prior to his arrival on the CSU Stanislaus campus, Strickland was the assistant coach for the women's basketball program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton between 2009 and 2012. Before his at Delta College, Strickland was the varsity girls coach (2007-09) and varsity boys assistant coach (2002-07) at Stockton's Edison High School. Strickland spent nine years as a professional player in Europe and Asia. His accolades include being named the top point guard in the Asian Basketball Championships three times (1996-98). He was the most valuable player of the 1997 Asian Basketball Championships. He was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego from 1988 to 1992, when he amassed 1,040 career points. Currently, he still holds the third spot in the USD record book with 408 assists.
HOME STAND: Stan State went 1-1 last at home last weekend with an 81-69 loss to. Cal State Los Angeles and a 60-50 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Mya Blake averaged 14.5 points per game followed by
Asha Walker's 12.5 scoring average.
Taylor Pilot dished out 12 assists and recorded six steals to go with her 6.5 rebounding average.
Joia Armstrong shot 57% from the field and Blake shot 71% from the line.
Liliana Marques was five-for-11 from three-point land for a 45.5%.
IN A TIE FOR FOURTH PLACE: Stan State and Cal Poly Humboldt are tied for fourth place each with an 8-7 conference record. The Warriors are five games out of first place (Cal State San Marcos 13-2), three out of second place (Chico State 11-4), and two out of third place (Cal Poly Pomona 10-5). Stan State is just one game out of sixth place (Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Bernardino, and Cal State East Bay each at 7-8). The top six teams at the end of the regular season on February 29 will receive a berth in the 2023-24 CCAA Basketball Championships in San Bernardino, Calif., March 7-9. The winner of the CCAA Tournament Championship will receive the conference's bid to the NCAA Division II Championships.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Four Warriors have recorded double-doubles this season in
Taylor Pilot,
Joia Armstrong,
Lyric Richardson, and
Talia Maxwell. Pilot recorded a double-double in the Warriors' game versus Simon Fraser on Nov. 18. Pilot scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Armstrong recorded her first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game at Hawai'i Pacific on Nov. 21. She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds. She went 10-for-16 from the field, blocked five shots and made her only attempt from beyond the arc. Richardson recorded her first double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) in the Warriors' victory over Cal State East Bay on Nov. 30, 2022. She went five-for-ten from the field to go with her two steals and two blocked shots. Her second double-double came in Stan State's victory at CSUMB on New Year's Eve with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She was perfect from the field going five-for-five. Maxwell recorded her first collegiate double-double in the Warriors' victory over CSU San Bernardino on Jan. 20 with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Stan State junior transfer
Mya Blake was named to the Warrior Classic that took place Nov. 17-18 at The Fitzpatrick Arena. Blake led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend while averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. She had a +2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the Warriors' two games. For the weekend, Blake shot 46% from the field including connecting on two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc. She was a perfect two-for-two from the line.
Liliana Marques was named to the 2023 Outrigger Hoops in Hawai'i Classic All-Tournament Team. Marques averaged 19.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in the Warriors' two games in the classic including scoring a career high 25 points in Stan State's game versus Northwestern Oklahoma State. Marques shot 48% from the field including 52.6% (10-for-19) from three-point land. The Sacramento native was four-for-six from the line to go with her three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
CCAA LEADERS: Stan State is second in the CCAA in blocked shots (3.72) and third in offensive rebounding (14.3 rpg) and opponent three-point field goal percentage defense (29.1%). They are fourth in steals (9.72) and rebounding (40.1) and fifth in field goal percentage defense (38%) and three-point field goal percentage (33.2%). Stan State is sixth in three's made per game (6.3) and scoring defense (65.3).
Mya Blake is second in the CCAA in steals (52), tied for third in steals per game (2.3), seventh in treys made (41), ninth in three's made per game (1.8), and tenth in scoring (14.7 ppg).
Taylor Pilot is second in assist/turnover ratio (+1.3), third in steals (51), tied for fourth in steals made per game (2.3), and fifth in assists (78) and assists per game (4.5).
Aunika Hornung is third in blocked shots (26) and blocked shots per game (1.3).
Joia Armstrong is seventh with her 21 blocked shots and
Liliana Marques is tenth with her 35 treys made.
SEAWOLVES IN REVIEW: Sonoma State is 11-11 overall and 6-9 in the CCAA. The Seawolves have lost their seven games in a row including both at home last weekend to Cal State San Bernardino (55-52) and Cal Poly Pomona (76-68 overtime). They are averaging 66.4 points per game and giving up 65.1 points per game. Sonoma is outrebounding its opponents 38.1 to 38.0. Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Alli McDonald (16.7 ppg), Jayme Blackard (12.6 ppg), and Madisyn Clark (10.0 ppg). McDonald leads the Seawolves with her 10.7 rebounding average, 20 blocked shots, 44.7% shooting from the field, and 83.5% shooting from the line. Blackard has dished out a team high 79 assists and recording a team leading 33 steals. Madisyn Clark leads Sonoma with her 40% shooting from three-point land and 38 treys made.
LAST TIME: Sonoma State defeated the Warriors 68-54 in Turlock on January 6, 2024. The Seawolves outscored Stan State 45-21 in the second half after trailing 33 to 23 at halftime.
Mya Blake led the Warriors with 15 points followed by a trio of Stan State players each with 10 points in
Jadyn Patterson,
Taylor Pilot, and
Alexis Woodson. Pilot also had nine assists and eight rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench. Alli McDonald had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Seawolves followed by Jayme Blackard's 11 points. Sonoma was 17-for-23 from the line and Stan State went six-for-seven.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Since 2008, the all-time series is tied at 14-14 with Sonoma State winning six of the last seven meetings. The last Warrior win was a 55-52 victory on Dec. 10, 2021, in Turlock behind
Da'Myiah Lewis' 23 points and

COUGARS IN REVIEW: Cal State San Marcos enters its contest at home against Cal State Monterey Bay with a 16-4 overall record and a 13-2 CCAA record. The Cougars have won ten of their last eleven games including their last three games in a row. They defeated Cal Poly Pomona 74-69 and Cal State San Bernardino 69-64 both at home this weekend. CSUSM is averaging 70.2 points per game while giving up 59.3 points per game. The Cougars are outrebounding their opponents 39.5 to 34.5. Three players are averaging double figures in Charity Gallegos (15.8 ppg), Jordan Vasquez (15.2 ppg), and Mina Tameilau (11.7 ppg). Gallegos leads the team with her 49 treys, 37.4% shooting from three-point land, 57 assists, and 24 steals. Vasquez is averaging a team leading 11.5 rebounds per game and Tameilau is shooting a team high 82.4% from the line. Mallia Mastora has blocked a team high 28 shots.
