Men’s Basketball to Finish First Half of CCAA Season at Home

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will finish the first half of the 2024-25 CCAA season hosting Sonoma State and Cal State San Marcos this Thursday and Saturday, January 23 and 25 at The Fitz.  The Warriors will host Sonoma State at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday.  Stan State will finish its week hosting Cal State San Marcos at 3:00 p.m. this Saturday on Jessica's House Recognition Day. 

LAST WEEK:  The Warriors ended their four-game road trip going 0-2 in the Inland Empire losing 65-52 to Cal State San Bernardino and 67-47 to Cal Poly Pomona.  The trio of Jeremiah Jones, Lloyd French, and Daniel Ameyaw each scored 12 points to lead the Warriors in their game at CSUSB.  Jeremiah Jones scored 16 points to lead Stan State against Pomona.  Jones finished the weekend averaging 14.0 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals.  French averaged 9.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.  Ameyaw shot 53% from the field and averaged 8.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. 

WARRIORS: Stan State enters the weekend with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-6 CCAA record.  The Warriors are averaging 68.4 points while giving up 70.6 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 35.7 to 33.2.  Jeremiah Jones leads Stan State with his 18.3 scoring average, 48 assists, and 87.2% shooting from the charity stripe.  Jonathan Tchengang is averaging 8.4 points per game, which is second on the team, and leads the Warriors with his 24 steals.  Daniel Ameyaw is averaging a team high 7.3 rebounds per game with a team leading eight blocked shots.  Jason Zimmer has made a team leading 55.3% of his attempts from the field and 52.9% of his attempts from beyond the arc.  Jason Cibull leads Stan State with his 24 three-point field goals made. 

FOUR-GAME HOME STAND: The Warriors will begin a four-game home stand this weekend hosting Sonoma State (Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m.) and Cal State San Marcos (Jan. 25 at 3:00 p.m.).  they will end the home stand next week hosting Cal State East Bay (Jan. 30 at 7:30 pm.) and San Francisco State (Feb. 1 at 3:00 p.m.) to begin the second half of the CCAA season for the Warriors.  Eight of the Warriors' final twelve games will be at The Fitz to end the regular season.  Heading into this home stand, Stan State is 2-3 at home including 2-1 in CCAA games. 

HALF-GAME OUT:  Heading into this weekend, Stan State is in a four-way tie for seventh place with Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal State East Bay, and San Francisco State.  The Warriors are a half-game out of sixth place (Sonoma State 4-5), two out of fourth place (Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Los Angeles 5-5), and three out of third place (Cal State San Bernardino 6-4). The top six teams at the end of the regular season, March 1, will receive a berth to the 2024-25 CCAA Basketball Tournament Championships, March 6-8 in San Marcos at The Sports Center on Cal State San Marcos' campus. 

STARS IN THE CLASSROOM: Stan State posted a 3.433 team grade point average this Fall semester.  Twelve Warriors had at least a 3.25 in Daniel Ameyaw, Jason Cibull, Mahda FallayLloyd French, JJ Funk, Jeremiah Jones, Antony Newman-Gomez, Tahjae Ordonio, Fabian Reichstadt, Jordan Smith, Skylar Strickland, and Jason Zimmer.

5-1:  Stan State is 5-1 when the Warriors score 70 points or more in a game.  The Warriors' only loss when they have scored more than 70 points was an 86-83 overtime loss at home to UC Merced.  Their five victories are Fresno Pacific (74-62), Western Oregon (94-88), Hawai'i Pacific (75-67), Cal State Monterey Bay (90-79), and Cal Poly Humboldt (72-58).  Stan State's two victories when scoring less than 70 points was its 69-68 overtime victory at Cal State Monterey Bay and a 67-55 victory at San Francisco State.

FIFTEEN STRAIGHT: Jeremiah Jones has scored in double figures in all 15 games that he has played in this season for the Warriors.  He leads the team with his 18.3 scoring average, 48 assists, and 87.2% shooting from the field.  Four times he has scored 20 points or more including a career high 33 points in the Warrior victory over Western Oregon in Rohnert Park, Calif., on Nov. 9, 2024. 

DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Daniel Ameyaw recorded his first double-double of the season and fourth of his career with a 16-point, 11-rebound performance in the Warriors' victory over CSUMB on Nov. 30.  He was seven-for-12 from the field and went two-for-four from the line. Ameyaw blocked two shots and added a steal in 31 minutes.  For the season, Ameyaw is averaging 8.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game with a team high eight blocked shots.

CCAA STATS:  Stan State is in the top six in five team statistical categories.  The Warriors are third in turnover margin (+2.25), fourth in treys made/game (7.1), fifth in scoring defense (70.6 ppg), fifth in assist/turnover ratio (+0.99), and sixth in field goal percentage defense (44.8%).

Jeremiah Jones is second in free throw percentage (87.2%), third in scoring (18.3 ppg), tied for third in assist/turnover ratio (+1.7), fourth in field goal percentage (48.6%), and ninth in assists/game (3.2).  Daniel Ameyaw is fourth in rebounding (7.3 rebounds/game).

In CCAA games only, Jones is second in free throw percentage (93.3%), third in scoring (18.3 ppg), eighth in assist/turnover ratio (+1.4), and tenth in field goal percentage (45.3%).  Jason Cibull is third in three-point field goal percentage (45.8%), and sixth in treys made/game (2.2).  Daniel Ameyaw is fourth in rebounding (7.2). 

UPDATE ON THE SEAWOLVES:  Sonoma State is 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the CCAA after going 1-1 last week at home defeating Cal Poly Humboldt (89-78) and losing to Chico State (96-90).  The Seawolves are averaging 74.9 points per game while giving up 74.8 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 34.7 to 31.6.  Five players are averaging double digits in scoring in James Nobles (17.5 ppg), Nick Medeiros (12.5 ppg), Julian Bryant (11.6 ppg), Jakob Milling (10.5 ppg), and Chris Holley (10.3 ppg).  Milling is averaging a team high 6.2 rebounds per game and recorded a team leading 17 steals.  Holley has dished out a team high 63 assists and shot a team best 53.3% from the field.  Jack Schultz has connected on a team leading 26 treys.  Bryant has made a team best 50% of his attempts from beyond the arc. Medeiros leads Sonoma with his 89.7% shooting from the line. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SONOMA:  The Seawolves leads the all-time series 27-17 since 2001 with the Warriors.  Sonoma has won the last four meetings including both games last year 61-59 (Jan. 6, 2024, in Turlock) and 75-58 (Feb. 8, 2024, in Rohnert Park).  The last Stan State win over Sonoma was on Jan. 27, 2022, in Rohnert Park a 70-59 victory.  The last win for Stan State in Turlock over the Seawolves was on Dec. 18, 2021, 76-55.

COUGARS IN REVIEW:  Cal State San Marcos enters its game this Thursday at Cal State Monterey Bay with a 1-14 overall record and a 1-8 CCAA record.  The Cougars have lost their last five games in a row since defeating Cal State East Bay 68-66 on Jan. 2.  They lost 77-67 to Chico State and 64-56 to Cal Poly Humboldt at home this past weekend.  CSUSM is averaging 64.9 points per game while giving up 64.8 points per game.  The Cougars are outrebounding their opponents 33.9 to 31.5.  Dexter Stratton is averaging a team leading 11.1 points per game followed by Keavie Love's 10.7 scoring average.  Stratton leads the Cougars with his 46.4% shooting from the field and 6.5 rebounds per game.  Donovan Watkins has dished out a team high 32 assists.  Love leads CSUSM with his 21 steals.  Will Harris has made a team high 21 three-point field goals made, and Austin Nassar is shooting a team leading 42.9% from three-point land. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CSUSM:  The Cougars lead the all-time series with Stan State 11-3 since 2016.  They have won the last six meetings including both games last year (71-42 in Turlock, Jan. 4, 2024, and 80-75 in San Marcos, Feb. 10,2024).  The last Stan State victory over CSUSM was in Turlock on Jan. 11, 2020, 66-53 behind Vida Faniel and Xavier Francois each with 16 points.
