Stan State Faces Three in Tournament of Champions and Hosts Biola Shortly After

TURLOCK, Calif.--- The Warriors continue their homestand this week with games in the Tournament of Champions (ToC) Stan State hosts here in Turlock, Calif.  They will continue non-conference play through next Tuesday, February 18th, with three games in the ToC and a doubleheader with Biola University on the 18th. The Warriors will play No.24 Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, February 13th at 3:00 p.m., weather permitting. On Sunday, February 16th, Stan State will play two, with the first game versus Central Washington University at 10:00 a.m. and the second game facing Simon Fraser at 12:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK: Stan State fell to Dominican University of California in both games of the doubleheader by one run. Victoria Alacron put up solid outing in the first game with five strikeouts and two runs over seven innings, but unfortunately allowed seven hits and five walks. The Warriors scored first in the fourth inning with Katie Thornsberry making it on base after getting hit by a pitch. Karli DalBianco hit a sacrifice bunt to move Thornsberry into scoring position, and McKenna Beach seized the opportunity but singling up the middle to score Thornsberry. The Warriors lost game one 2-1 and attempted to rally in game two.

Once again, the Warriors scored first, this time in the second inning. Allejandra Perea singled to start off the inning, moving to third off a wild pitch and then an error that allowed Lauryn Serda to reach first base. Perea scored on a groundout by Shelby Frutoz. Stan State earned its next run in the third after Katie Thornsberry reached with a single and moved to third off a double by Karli DalBianco. McKenna Beach doubled to score Thornsberry. Down 5-2 in the seventh, the Warriors rallied with two runs but fell short of the tying run. With Marissa Cerda reaching on a fielder's choice and Malia Babasa getting to first with a bunt single, Katie Thornsberry grounded out but moved up the runners. Karli DalBianco doubled to score them both, but the Warriors' rally came to an end with a strikeout and the Penguins claimed the game 5-4.

WARRIORS IN REVIEW: Stan State, at 3-3 overall, is currently hitting .290 as a team and have a 2.17 earned run average. The Warriors have a .361 slugging percentage and a .373 on base percentage. Their nine errors earn them a .951 fielding percentage in their six games played.

HITTERS: Two Warriors are hitting over .400 in Katie Thornsberry (.461) and Karli DalBianco (.444). Two more players are hitting over .300 in McKenna Beach (.333) and Sarah Warden (.313). Karli DalBianco leads the team in hits with eight, followed by Katie Thornsberry with seven. McKenna Beach leads in runs batted in with six and has hit Stan State's only home run thus far. Karli DalBianco and Malia Babasa have crossed home plate four times each for the Warriors. McKenna Beach is the team leader with a .668 slugging percentage and Katie Thornsberry has the highest on-base percentage at .579. Thornsberry and Babasa have acquired the team's two stolen bases.

PITCHERS: Victoria Alarcon, who is 2-1, leads the team with a 0.67 earned run average with 22 strikeouts and seven walks. Sasha Martello has recorded Stan State's other win with Bree Barner recording the only save. Shelby Frutoz has strike out 10 while Barner has struck out six.

DALBIANCO: Karli DalBianco went three-for-four in the second game versus Dominican with two of those hits being doubles and batting in two runs. She is currently batting .444 with a .556 slugging percentage and .524 on-base percentage.

THORNSBERRY ON BASE: Katie Thornsberry leads the team with her .579 on base percentage, paired with her .467 batting average. Thornsberry has walked three times and gotten hit by a pitch once to reach base. She has also been four out of the teams 20 runs scored.

HELPFUL HITS: Transfer McKenna Beach has reached base in all six of the Warriors' games, earning at least one hit in four and walking in four games. Beach has hit two doubles, one home run, and earned six RBIs.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE: The No. 24 Nighthawks are 5-4, breaking a three-game loss streak with a 4-3 win versus Azusa Pacific after six innings. The second game of their doubleheader was cancelled due to weather. As a team, they have a .258 batting average and 2.70 earned run average. Four players are batting over .300 in Ava Clark (.440), Charlotte Forniss (.346), Kellcie Adams (.333), and Keana Bell (.304). Clark leads the team in hits (11), walks (four), slugging percentage (.560), and on base percentage (.563). Clark is tied with Clarissa Moreno for the most runs scored at five. Miah Lusk has earned two of the Nighthawks' victories and leads with a 1.59 earned run average. Lusk has a team leading 29 strikeouts over 26.1 innings.

ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State will look to even the score with Northwest Nazarene as the Nighthawks lead the all-time series 3-2. They have only faced each other five times since 2015, with the most recent matchup occurring last year on February 2nd in Azusa, Calif.  The Warriors fell 3-2 despite a two-run rally in the sixth.

CENTRAL WASHINGTON: The Wildcats are 0-5 overall and have no played since February 2nd due to weather postponing their game with Eastern Oregon on the 8th. They will face Jessup University and three CCAA teams before taking on Stan State. The team is currently averaging .202 at the plate and a 4.34 earned run average in the circle. Three players are batting over .300 in Karsyn Decker (.438), McKayla Cable (.333), and Gabi Casco (.333). Decker has seven hits and has scored three runs. Cable leads in slugging with a .500 average. Casco, Adriana Garcia, and Jessica Reitz-Eaton all have three walks. Ellie Gilbert has a 2.33 ERA over six innings pitched. Payton Kessler has struck out 14 over 12.2 innings pitched with a 0-2 record and 3.87 ERA.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Central Washington leads the all-time series with Stan State 7-3, though when the Wildcats visited last year on March 22nd, the Warriors claimed the win 7-5. Stan State came back from a five-run deficit with a five-run fourth inning and a two-run fifth.

SIMON FRASER: Simon Fraser is currently 1-5 after beginning their season at the South Central Regional Challenge. Their one win comes over Sul Ross State (Texas) 1-1 in five innings. As a team, they are batting .260 and have a 5.19 earned run average. Two Red Leafs are batting over .300 in Cassidy Affeldt (.400) and Grace McMillan (.357). Affeldt leads in slugging (.533), on base percentage (.438), hits (six), and runs batted in (five). McMillan has scored four runs to lead the team while Abby McGlynn's three walks are the most on the team. Erin Murphy is the team leader in stolen bases with four. Jordyn Ruppel has a 1-0 record with a 2.63 earned run average. Monica Bourque has 10 strikeouts over 11.2 innings pitched, but has given up 10 walks as well and has a 4.80 ERA.

ALL-TIME SERIES: The Warriors have faced Simon Fraser twice and the all-time series is tied 1-1. The two teams played a doubleheader on February 20th of last year, with each game being a blowout. Simon Fraser won the first in five innings 9-0, while the Warriors took the second game 8-2.

BIOLA UNIVERSITY: The Eagles are 2-6 overall, picking up one win in the Concordia Kickoff Classic versus Sonoma State and splitting a doubleheader with Northwest Nazarene. The team has a .208 batting average and a 4.44 earned run average. Three players are hitting over .250 in Mikala Huskey (.238) and Jackie Ibarra (.282). Ibarra leads the team in hits (seven), runs scored (seven), and walks (three). Kendall Nakano has the highest slugging percentage at .381. Makayla Jordan leads the team in runs batted in with five and Kennadie Tsue has the most stolen bases with two. Maddie Granados, with a 1-2 record, has a 2.90 ERA with six strikeouts over 19.1 innings. Kayla Bousquette has a team leading 13 strikeouts over 23.2 innings.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Biola University has faced the Warriors once on neutral ground in Irvine, Calif. on January 30th, 2020. They claimed the win over Stan State 8-0 in five innings.

UP NEXT:  The Warriors will begin CCAA play on Friday, February 21st when they travel to No. 14 Cal State San Marcos for two doubleheaders. The first game on Friday will begin at 12:00 p.m. while the first game on Saturday, February 22nd is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
