Warriors to Begin CCAA Play This Weekend Hosting Cal State San Bernardino

TURLOCK, Calif.---  After going 5-5 at home in their non-conference slate, Stan State will begin its 40-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) part of its schedule this weekend with a four-game series at Warrior Field against Cal State San Bernardino.  The series opener is set for 6:00 p.m. this Friday, February 21.  The two teams will play a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader this Saturday, February 22.  The series will conclude Sunday, February 23 with a noon scheduled first pitch. 

LAST WEEK: The Warriors went 2-1 in their three-game series against Minnesota Crookston out of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).  Stan State took the first two games 6-3 and 4-2 (10), but lost the series finale 9-4.  Arthur Navarette, Jr., who had the game-winning hit in the 4-2 victory on Sunday, hit a team high .556 going five-for-nine while driving in two runs. The Warriors' pitching staff had a 4.50 earned run average with 27 strikeouts in the three games including eight combined strikeouts by Caleb Bertoncini and Cameron RosenZach Geiss recorded both victories for the Warriors in relief.  He went 2-0 with three strikeouts and no walks while giving up no hits in two innings pitched. 

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  Stan State enters the weekend 5-5.  The Warriors are hitting .262 as a team and have a team earned run average of 3.97.  They have posted a .987 fielding percentage.  The Warrior pitching staff has struck out 90 batters and walked 40 in 93 innings pitched. 

HITTERS:  Five Warriors are hitting over .300 in Jackson Brooks (.444), Jacob Baker (.375), Ryan Leonesio (.357), Arthur Navarette Jr. (.333), and Tyler Van Dyk (.318).  JD Madrigal has driven in a team leading eight runs and scored a team high eight runs.  Four Warriors have hit two home runs each in Luke Davies, Alex Solis, Flavio Perez, and Madrigal.  Solis leads the team with his six doubles with three Warriors have a one triple in Van Dyk, Robert Valdivia, and Jacob Reyes.  Baker leads the team with his four stolen bases while Brooks has three.  Davies has posted a team leading .619 and Brooks has a team high .545 on-base percentage. 

PITCHERS: With at least ten innings pitched, Caleb Bertoncini has a team low 0.82 earned run average (ERA).  Cameron Rosen has posted a 2.53 ERA and Rocco Gurrola has a 3.06 ERA. Rocco Gurrola has struck out 18 batters and walked no one.  Rosen has struck out 14 batters and walked four and Bertoncini has 13 strikeouts and seven walks. Zach Geiss is 2-0 while Gurrola, Bertoncini, Gurrola, and Austin Balentine each have a victory this season.  Rosen has Stan State's only save. Geiss is another Warrior pitcher with no walks and has struck out six batters. 

NATIONALLY RANKED:  Rocco Gurrola is one of 31 pitchers that have not walked a batter this season.  Ryan Leonesio is one of 35 batters in Division II that have not struck out at the plate.  Stan State has a .984 fielding percentage which is 19th in the nation. 

FLOCOLLEGE/CCAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:  Last week as afternoon by the office of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Stan State's Rocco Gurrola was named the FloCollege/CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week.  Gurrola struck out seven batters and walked no one in the Warriors' 10-2 victory over Saint Martin's on February 8. 
 
GEISS:  Zach Geiss is now 2-0 with a 5.14 earned run average in four appearances.  His first two wins as a Warrior were in this weekend's three-game series against Minnesota Crookston.  The junior transfer pitched two innings of relief while striking out three and walking no one in his two appearances.  For the season, he has struck out six batters and walked no one. 

ALL-TIME LEADER:  With his six doubles this past weekend, Alex Solis is the all-time leader with 46 doubles in the NCAA DII ERA of Warrior baseball.  Solis is sixth on the hits list with 159. He is four RBI's from moving into tenth place on the RBI list and six runs from moving into the top ten in runs scored.

ALSO MOVING CLOSER:  Four Warriors in Jacob Baker, Austin Balentine, Ryan Leonesio, and Flavio Perez are moving closer to moving into the top ten lists at Stan State in the D2ERA.  Baker is five stolen bases from moving into the top ten as he has 30 career stolen bases.  Balentine is six victories away from moving into the top ten in the wins list as he is now 11-4 in his career.  With his 29 stolen bases, Leonesio is six from moving into the top ten in stolen bases.  Perez has 12 career home runs and driven in 73 runs.  Those numbers place him two home runs and 17 runs batted in from moving into tenth.  

MULTIPLE:  Arthur Navarette Jr., has five multiple-hit games and Jacob Baker and Ryan Leonesio each have four.  Robert Valdivia, Alex Solis, and Luke Davies each have two multiple-RBI games.  Solis is on a six-game hitting streak while Jackson Brooks and Navarette each have a three-game hitting streak.  Leonesio has reached base safely in the Warriors' first ten games.  Valdivia has reached safely in eight straight games and Baker and Solis have in five.    

CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO:  The Coyotes are 8-2 after winning their last six games in a row including sweep a three-game series from Central Washington at home (10-4, 16-12, 27-7) this weekend.  They are hitting .392 as a team and have a 6.24 earned run average.  Five CSUSB players are hitting over .400 in Jason Shedlock (.526), Tyler Vanneste (.513), Jacob Mejia (.457), Daryl Ruiz (.429), and Benji Solano (.423).  Mejia has driven in a team leading 22 runs and Shedlock has scored a team high 21 runs. They have hit 21 home runs led by Mejia with four followed by Shedlock with three.  Dylan O'Connor and Jesse Alfaro are each 2-0 on the mound with Tank Rodriguez recording two saves.  Matt Romero has a team low 3.46 earned run average.  Four pitchers have at least 12 strikeouts in O'Connor (16), Carter Herrera (13), Ivan Rodriguez (12), and Matt Romero (12).

ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series with the Coyotes 30-23 since 2008.  The Warriors took both games of last year's rain shortened four-game series in San Bernardino.  They won game one 13-11 as the Warriors pounded out 17 hits.  Alex Solis went four-for-five, driving in five runs, scoring a run, and hitting a home run.  Stan State won the second game 6-2 with Robert Valdivia going three-for-three with a run scored.  Solis was two-for-four with two runs scored.

UP NEXT:  After Sunday's series finale, Stan State will go on the road for the first time this season for a four-game series in Carson, Calif., against Cal State Dominguez Hills.  That series will begin at 2pm on Friday, February 28.  The two teams will play a noon starting doubleheader on March 1.  The series will conclude with an 11am starting game on March 2.  Stan State will return home for a four-game series with Cal State Los Angeles, March 7-9.
