Men’s Basketball Looks to Move Up in CCAA Standings

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State enters this two-game road trip to Northern California sitting in a four-way tie for sixth place in the CCAA standings heading into the final eight games of the regular season. The top six teams at the end of the regular season on March 1 will receive a berth to the CCAA Tournament Championship in San Marcos, Calif., March 6-8.  The Warriors return to the court this Thursday, February 6 in Chico, Calif., for a 7:30 p.m. scheduled tip-off with Chico State.  They will end their two-game road this Saturday, February 8 in Arcata, Calif., for a 5:00 p.m. game with Cal Poly Humboldt.    

LAST WEEK:  The Warriors went 1-1 last week to end their four-game home stand.  Stan State started its week with a 79-69 loss to Cal State East Bay despite the trio of Jeremiah Jones (14 points), Cameron Walker (14 points), and Daniel Ameyaw (12 points) scoring in double digits.  Ameyaw added 10 rebounds for the hosts. The Warriors came back on Saturday to defeat San Francisco State 61-57 behind Jones' 19 points.  Ameyaw added 12 points and Jason Cibull chipped in 11 points for the victors. Stan State held the Gators to just 9.5% shooting from three-point land and 39.7% from the field. 

WARRIORS: Stan State enters this week with a 9-11 overall record and a 6-8 CCAA record, which places the Warriors in a four-way tie for sixth place with Cal Poly Pomona, San Francisco State, and Cal State Los Angeles.  They're averaging 68.7 points per game while giving up 70.8 points per game.  Stan State's opponents are outrebounding the Warriors 35.8 to 32.7.  Jeremiah Jones leads the way with his 18.5 scoring average to go with his team high 47.4% shooting from the field, 89.5% shooting from the line, and 58 assists.  Jonathan Tchengang has recorded a team leading 28 steals.  Daniel Ameyaw leads Stan State with his 7.3 rebounding average and is tied with Mahda Fallay each with eight blocked shots.  Jason Cibull leads the team with his 29 three-point field goals made while Jason Zimmer has connected on a team high 46.5% of his attempts from behind the arc. 

FOUR-WAY TIE FOR SIXTH PLACE:  Stan State entering this weekend is in a four-way tie for sixth place with Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, and San Francisco State each with a 6-8 CCAA record.  The Warriors one game out fifth place (Cal State East Bay 7-7) and two games out of fourth place (Cal Poly Humboldt 8-6).  They are just three games out of third place (Cal State San Bernardino 9-5) with eight games left in the regular season.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season on March 1 will receive a berth to the 2024-25 CCAA Basketball Tournament Championship, March 6-8, on the campus of Cal State San Marcos in San Marcos, Calif. 

STARS IN THE CLASSROOM: Stan State posted a 3.433 team grade point average this Fall semester.  Twelve Warriors had at least a 3.25 in Daniel Ameyaw, Jason Cibull, Mahda Fallay, Lloyd French, JJ Funk, Jeremiah Jones, Antony Newman-Gomez, Tahjae Ordonio, Fabian Reichstadt, Jordan Smith, Skylar Strickland, and Jason Zimmer.

ANOTHER SERIES SWEEP: With its 61-57 victory over San Francisco State, the Warriors swept their season series from the Gators.  They defeated them earlier this season 67-55 in San Francisco.  The Warriors also swept the season series from Cal State Monterey Bay 90-79 in Turlock and 69-68 in overtime in Seaside.  The last time they have swept a CCAA series was during the 2022-23 season (Cal Poly Pomona).  The last time, Stan State swept more than two opponents in a season was during the 2019-20 season (Cal State East Bay, Cal State Monterey Bay, and San Francisco State). 

6-1:  Stan State is 5-1 when the Warriors score 70 points or more in a game.  The Warriors' only loss when they have scored more than 70 points was an 86-83 overtime loss at home to UC Merced.  Their five victories are Fresno Pacific (74-62), Western Oregon (94-88), Hawai'i Pacific (75-67), Cal State Monterey Bay (90-79), Cal Poly Humboldt (72-58), and Sonoma State (95-85).  Stan State's three victories when scoring less than 70 points was its 69-68 overtime victory at Cal State Monterey Bay, a 67-55 victory at San Francisco State, and a 61-57 win over San Francisco State at home. 

NOW AT 19: Jeremiah Jones has scored in double figures in all 19 games that he has played in this season for the Warriors.  He leads the team with his 18.5 scoring average, 58 assists, 89.5% shooting from the line, and 47.4% shooting from the field. Five times he has scored 20 points or more including a career high 33 points in the Warrior victory over Western Oregon in Rohnert Park, Calif., on Nov. 9, 2024.  For his career, Jones has scored 730 points, grabbed 223 rebounds, dished out 121 assists, and recorded 65 steals during his four-year career as a Warrior. 

DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Daniel Ameyaw recorded his second double-double of the season in the Warriors' game versus Cal State East Bay this past Thursday. The junior post player scored 12 points to go with his 10 rebounds.  This was his fifth of his career.  For the season, Ameyaw is averaging 8.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and his tied with Mahda Fallay with the team lead with eight blocked shots. 

CCAA STATS:  Stan State is in the top six in six team CCAA statistical categories.  The Warriors are third in turnover margin (+1.75) and are fifth in assist/turnover ratio (+1.0), free throw percentage (72.7%), and treys made (7.0/game).  They are sixth in scoring defense (70.8 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (45.1%).
Jeremiah Jones is first in the league with his 89.5% shooting from the lien while he is second in scoring (18.5 ppg), tied for fifth in assist/turnover ratio (+1.5), sixth in field goal percentage (47.4%), and tied for ninth in assists/game (3.1).  Daniel Ameyaw is fourth with his 7.3 rebounding average.  In CCAA only games, Jones is first in free throw percentage (93.2%), third in scoring (18.7 ppg), and seventh in field goal percentage (44.4%).  Jason Cibull is tied for eighth with his 27 treys made and tenth with his 1.9 three-point field goals made per game.  Daniel Ameyaw is fifth with his 7.2 rebounding average. 

UPDATE ON THE WILDCATS:  Entering this weekend, Chico State is 15-8 overall and 11-3 in the CCAA and receiving votes nationally in the NABC poll.  The Wildcats have lost three of their last five games including both games this past weekend on the road at Cal State San Bernardino (82-64) and Cal Poly Pomona (65-54).  They are averaging 78.9 points per game while giving up 74.2 points per game).  Chico's opponents are outrebounding the Wildcats 33.2 to 22.7. Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in JoJo Murphy (20.8 ppg), Isaiah Kerr (14.2 ppg), Miles Daniels (11.2 ppg), and Trae Taylor (10.8 ppg).  Taylor leads the team with his 5.4 rebounding average, 73.5% shooting from the field, and 19 blocked shots.  Murphy has made a team high 49.4% of his attempts from the field, 40.8% of his attempts from three-point land, and connected on a team high 49 treys.  Daniels leads Chico with his 76 assists and 35 steals.  Cortevious Taylor leads the Wildcats with his 85.3% shooting from the line. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CHICO:   Since 1998, Chico State leads the all-time series with the Warriors 48-32.  The two teams have split the last four meetings with Chico State defeating Stan State 76-62 on Jan. 4, 2025, in Turlock.  In that game, JoJo Murphy scored 24 points and Trae Taylor had 21 points to lead the Wildcats.  Jeremiah Jones paced the Warriors with 18 points while Jason Cibull and William Chavarin each chipped in 11 points.  The last Warrior victory in Chico was a 74-66 win on Nov. 21, 2019, behind Vida Faniel's 17 points. 

LUMBERJACKS IN REVIEW:  Entering its game this Thursday versus Cal State Monterey Bay, the Cal Poly Lumberjacks are 12-7 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA.  The 'Jacks have won five games in a row and seven of their last ten games since losing 72-58 at Stan State on Jan. 2.  They are averaging 78.1 points per game while giving up 74.4 points per game.  The Lumberjacks are outrebounding their opponents 34.2 to 31.3.  Five players are averaging double digits in Rob Diaz (16.5 ppg), Josiah Sanders (12.1 ppg), Kalib Lacount (11.7 ppg), Aidan Fowler (10.7 ppg), and Marsal Mason (10.2 ppg).  Kyle Frelow leads the team with his 8.4 rebounding average and 61.3% shooting from the field.  Diaz leads Humboldt with his 31 treys made while Sanders has connected on a team high 44.4% of his attempts from beyond the arc.  Fowler has made a team leading 89.1% of his attempts from the charity stripe.  Lacount has dished out a team high 85 steals to go with his team leading 42 steals.  Mason has blocked a team high 34 shots. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. HUMBOLDT:  Since 2007, Cal Poly Humboldt leads the all-time series with the Warriors 24-12, but San State has won four of the last six meetings.  The Warriors defeated al Poly Humboldt 72-58 on Jan 2, 2025, in Turlock behind Jason Cibull's 17 points off the bench.  Jeremiah Jones chipped in 14 points and William Chavarin added 11 points.  Rob Diaz led Humboldt with 17 points.  The last Warrior win in Arcata was on Jan. 13, 2024, a 79-62 victory.
