Softball to Continue Nine-Game Home Stand with Doubleheader vs. Dominican

TURLOCK, Calif.---  After going 3-1 to begin the 2025 season, the Stan State Warriors will continue their season beginning nine-game home stand with a non-conference doubleheader with Dominican (Calif.) at 2:00 p.m. this Friday, February 7 weather permitting. 

LAST WEEK: Stan State started its regular season 3-1 after splitting with Jessup and sweeping Academy of Art this weekend.  The Warriors began the season with Victoria Alarcon pitching a five-hit complete game shutout in their 1-0 victory.  Katie Thornsberry pitch-hit run scoring single in the bottom of the Warrior sixth brought in Malia Babasa with the game-winning run.  Alarcon struck out seven and walked no one for the victory.  Jessup took the night cap 9-3 over the Warriors.  Karli DalBianco scored two of the Warriors' three runs while Sarah Warden had a run scoring double.

The Warriors started their doubleheader with Academy of Art with a 5-2 victory.  Sasha Martello (1-0) recorded the victory, giving up six hits and two runs while walking one.  Bree Barner recorded her first save as a Warrior by pitching two scoreless innings of relief and striking out two.  McKenna Beach drove in three runs including two on her first home run as a Warrior.  Alarcon pitched a two-hit complete game shutout in their 6-0 victory.  The senior pitcher struck out ten and walked two.  Lauryn Serda had a bases clearing run scoring double to key the Warrior six-run fifth to key Stan State's 6-0 victory. 

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  Stan State is hitting .311 as a team with a 2.25 earned run average.  The Warriors have a .388 slugging percentage to go with their .400 on-base percentage.  They have just two errors in the first four games for a .983 fielding percentage. 

HITTERS:  Four Warriors are hitting over .350 in Katie Thornsberry (.500), Karli DalBianco (.417), Lauryn Serda (.400), and Malia Babasa (.357).  Thornsberry, DalBianco, and Babasa lead the team with their five hits.  McKenna Beach has driven in a team high four runs and has Stan State's only home run.  DalBianco has scored a team leading four runs.  Serda has two of the Warriors' five doubles.  Beach leads Stan State with her .778 slugging percentage and Barner has a team leading .667 on-base percentage.  Thornsberry had Serda each had the Warrior stolen bases.

PITCHERS:  Victoria Alarcon is 2-0 with a team low 0.00 earned run average.  She leads the team with a team leading 17 strikeouts and walked two.  Sasha Martello has the Warriors' other victory.  Bree Barner has recorded Stan State's only save.  Shelby Frutoz and Barner each have struck out six batters.   

WHAT A START:  In her first two starts of the season, Victoria Alarcon has pitched two complete game shutouts to begin the 2025 season.  In the two games, she has struck out 17 batters and walked just two in 14 innings pitched.  Of her 17 strikeouts, ten came in the Warrior 6-0 victory over Academy of Art this past Monday. 

TWELFTH CAREER VICTORY: Sasha Martello recorded her twelfth victory as a Warrior in Stan State's 5-2 game one victory over Academy of Art.  She pitched five innings, giving up six hits and two runs while walking one.  In her first season as a Warrior in 2024, the senior went 11-6.

MULTIPLE: Stan State's Lauryn Serda has two two-hit games this season.  Serda and McKenna Beach have one three-RBI games heading into this Friday.  Katie Thornsberry, Karli DalBianco, and Malia Babasa each have a four-game hitting streak.  Those three along with Sarah Warden and McKenna Beach each have reached base safely in all four of the Warriors' games to start the season. 

DOMINICAN:  The Penguins enter this Friday's doubleheader with Stan State with a 3-2 record.  They defeated Fort Lewis (3-2), Central Washington (9-1), and Cal State San Bernardino (8-6) while they lost 5-2 to Cal State Dominguez Hills and 1-0 to Western Oregon at the Concordia Kickoff Classic.  Dominican has a .254 team batting average with a 1.96 team earned run average.  Three hitters are hitting over .300 in Melissa Garcia (.526), Taylor Rodriguez (.417), and Marina Media (.375).  Garcia has a team leading ten hits and is tied with Annabelle Burke and Tiare Guerrero with the team lead in runs scored with three.  Morgan Saucedo has driven in a team high five runs.  Garcia leads the team with her .685 slugging and .526 on-base percentage.  Taylor Rodriguez has two of the Penguins three victories with a team low 0.88 earned run average.  Kassidy Stetler has struck out a team high 12 batters with her 1-1 record.    

ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series with Dominican 7-5.  The Warriors won the last meeting 8-7 in eight innings last season at the Tournament of Champions, March 24, in Turlock.  Lauryn Serda brought in Katie Thornsberry with a game-winning single in the eighth.  Sasha Martello picked up the win in relief by pitching 3.2 innings, giving up five hits and two runs (one earned).

UP NEXT:  After Friday's doubleheader with Dominican, Stan State will host the 22nd Annual Tournament of Champions (TOC), February 13-16 at Warrior Field and the Pedretti Sports Complex.    The Warriors will play three games in the TOC in Northwest Nazarene (February 13, 3:00 p.m.), Central Washington (February 16, 10:00 a.m.), and Simon Fraser (February 17, 12:30 p.m.)
