Women's Soccer Travels to San Francisco State Friday, Hosts Central Valley Rival UC Merced Sunday

TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State women's soccer continues CCAA play with a pair of matches this week, beginning Friday, Oct. 9, when the Warriors travel to San Francisco to face San Francisco State at noon at Cox Stadium. The Warriors return home Sunday, Oct. 11, to host Central Valley rival UC Merced at 2 p.m. at Warrior Stadium. Stan State enters the week 5-3-2 overall and in second place in the CCAA with 12 points and a 4-2 conference record.

James Guides Warriors in First Season
First-year head coach Adam James has guided Stan State to a 5-3-2 overall record and a 4-2 mark in CCAA play through his first 10 matches leading the Warriors. Stan State enters the week in second place in the conference with 12 points.

James came to Stan State after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Azusa Pacific, where he helped the Cougars make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and capture the 2025 PacWest Championship. His coaching background also includes stops at Cal State San Marcos and San Diego State.

Weekend Recap
Stan State split its two CCAA matches last weekend, falling 4-0 to Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at Warrior Stadium before responding with a 2-0 road victory over Cal State East Bay on Sunday in Alameda. Alexi Ochoa and Karissa Franco each scored their first collegiate goals in Sunday's victory, while Mandy Thao assisted on both goals. Zara Mujica made three saves for her fourth shutout of the season and 10th of her career. Olivia Maragos added an assist for the victors.  The Warriors outshot their two opponents 27-25 over the weekend, including a 13-11 advantage against East Bay.

Warriors in Review
Stan State enters the week 5-3-2 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA with 12 points, sitting in second place in the conference standings. The Warriors have scored 13 goals while allowing 10 through 10 matches and hold a 118-109 advantage in shots.

Olivia Maragos leads the offense with four goals, three assists and 11 points, while Aliah Avila has three goals, two assists and eight points. Kyndra Obermeyer has scored twice, while Thao has a team-high four assists. Mujica has played all 900 minutes in goal, recording 46 saves, an .821 save percentage, a 1.00 goals-against average and four shutouts.

CCAA Standings
Cal State San Bernardino sits atop the CCAA standings with 14 points and a 4-0-2 conference record following Sunday's 2-1 victory at UC Merced. Stan State is in second place with 12 points at 4-2, just two points behind the Coyotes.

The top seven teams in the final regular-season standings advance to the CCAA Tournament. The tournament begins Sunday, Nov. 1, with first-round matches played at campus sites. The semifinals will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, with the championship match set for Saturday, Nov. 7, at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.

Among the CCAA Leaders
Stan State ranks among the CCAA leaders in several team categories through 10 matches. The Warriors are third in goals per match at 1.30 with 13 goals, fourth in points per match at 3.80 with 38 total points and fourth in assists per match at 1.20 with 12 assists. Stan State is also second in saves per match at 4.60 with 46 saves.

Individually, Avila and Maragos rank among the conference's top 10 in several offensive categories. Avila leads the CCAA with 1.90 shots on goal per match, ranks sixth with 2.50 shots per match and is sixth with two game-winning goals. She also ranks ninth with three goals and 10th with 0.80 points per match. Maragos ranks third with four goals, sixth with 1.22 points per match, eighth with 1.33 shots on goal per match and ninth with 2.22 shots per match.  Thao ranks fourth in the CCAA with 0.40 assists per match, while Maragos is fifth at 0.33 assists per match. Thao has a team-high four assists.

Mujica ranks second in the CCAA with 4.60 saves per match, sixth with an .821 save percentage, eighth with a 1.00 goals-against average and eighth with four shutouts.

Among the NCAA Leaders
As of the NCAA Division II statistical rankings through Oct. 1, Stan State ranks among the top 50 nationally in three team categories. The Warriors are 10th in NCAA Division II and first in the CCAA with a .593 shot accuracy. Stan State ranks 32nd nationally with an .860 save percentage and 50th with a 0.75 goals-against average.

Individually, Avila is tied for the NCAA Division II lead in shot accuracy at .833, having put 15 of her 18 shots on goal through the Oct. 1 rankings. Avila also ranks 43rd nationally with 1.88 shots on goal per match and 44th with two game-winning goals.

Maragos ranks 37th nationally with a .632 shot accuracy, while Mujica ranks 40th nationally with an .860 save percentage.

The NCAA statistical rankings have not yet been updated to include Stan State's Oct. 2 match against Cal State San Bernardino or Oct. 4 victory at Cal State East Bay.

Strength of Schedule
Stan State's opponents have combined for a 41-34-31 record this season, a .533 winning percentage, with only three of the Warriors' 10 opponents currently holding losing records. The Warriors have already faced two teams that were nationally ranked or receiving votes at the time of the match. Stan State opened the season against Concordia Irvine, which was receiving votes, and defeated then-No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles 2-1 on the road on Sept. 25.
Concordia Irvine continues to receive votes in the national poll, while another challenge awaits the Warriors later this month. Stan State will host current No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.

Warriors in the Record Book
Avila and Mujica continue to rank among Stan State's career leaders. Avila is tied for fifth in program history with 20 career goals, ranks fifth with 19 assists and is fifth with 60 points. She also ranks second in program history with 13 game-winning goals, trailing only Karenee Demerey's 29.

Mujica continues to climb the goalkeeper record book. Her shutout at Cal State East Bay was the 10th of her career, ranking eighth in program history and two behind Alyssa Herrman and Amanda Leal, who are tied for sixth with 12.  Mujica also has 114 career saves, ranking eighth and just one behind Herrman's 115 for seventh place.

Scouting San Francisco State
San Francisco State enters Friday's match 2-7-1 overall and 1-5 in CCAA play. The Gators have dropped their last two matches, both by 3-0 scores, at Cal State Monterey Bay and at home against Cal State San Marcos. Their conference victory came in a 2-1 home decision over Menlo on Sept. 27.  San Francisco State has scored five goals through 10 matches, with five different players accounting for one goal apiece. Emily Gehrlein-Allen leads the Gators with three points on one goal and one assist. Kiralyn Kuramoto leads the team with 24 shots and 13 shots on goal.

Peyton Graham has handled the majority of the goalkeeping duties, playing nearly 845 minutes with 43 saves, a .694 save percentage and a 2.02 goals-against average. As a team, San Francisco State has allowed 19 goals while scoring five and has been outshot 132-78.

Series History vs. San Francisco State
Stan State leads the all-time series with San Francisco State 23-5-6, including an 11-4-2 record in San Francisco. The Warriors have won four consecutive meetings and are 6-2-2 over the last 10 match-ups.  Stan State has posted four consecutive shutouts against the Gators, outscoring San Francisco State 10-0 during that stretch. In the most recent meeting on Nov. 2, 2025, the Warriors earned a 2-0 victory at Warrior Stadium. Avila opened the scoring in the 14th minute off an assist from Kellyann Rodriguez before Jocelin Roa scored in the 56th minute off assists from Avila and Rodriguez. Stan State outshot the Gators 30-4, including a 19-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Warriors' most recent trip to Cox Stadium came on Oct. 13, 2024, when Stan State earned a 3-0 victory. Avila opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Kaley Miller and Katie Smith scored just 45 seconds apart early in the second half. Stan State's defense and goalkeeping combined for eight saves to preserve the shutout.

Stan State is 23-5-6 against San Francisco State in CCAA matches and will take a four-match winning streak in the series into Friday's noon contest at Cox Stadium.

Scouting UC Merced
UC Merced enters the week 5-1-4 overall and 2-1-3 in CCAA play with nine conference points. The Bobcats suffered their first loss of the season Sunday, falling 2-1 at home to Cal State San Bernardino. Prior to that setback, UC Merced had opened the season unbeaten through nine matches, including conference victories over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Fresno Pacific and draws against Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State LA and Cal State East Bay.

The Bobcats have outscored their opponents 20-7 through 10 matches and hold a 143-68 advantage in shots. Former Warrior Jocelin Roa leads UC Merced with seven goals and 14 points, including four game-winning goals. Andrea Alvarenga has two goals and a team-high 10 assists for 14 points, while Alexia Alva has four goals and five assists for 13 points.

Alicia Lepe has started nine matches in goal and carries a 0.56 goals-against average with 29 saves, an .853 save percentage and five shutouts.

Before traveling to Turlock, UC Merced will host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. The Bobcats then face Stan State on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.

Series History vs. UC Merced
Stan State is 2-0 all-time against Central Valley rival UC Merced, with both meetings coming during the 2025 season. The Warriors have earned one victory at Warrior Stadium and one in Merced while outscoring the Bobcats 3-1.

The programs met for the first time on Sept. 28, 2025, at Warrior Stadium. The match remained scoreless for nearly the entire 90 minutes before Stan State scored with just two seconds remaining to earn a dramatic 1-0 victory. UC Merced held an 11-9 advantage in shots, while the Warriors put six of their nine attempts on goal. Stan State made five saves to record the shutout in front of 511 fans.

The teams met again on Nov. 6 in Merced, with Stan State earning a 2-1 victory. Maragos gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute off assists from Avila and Makeila Yancey. UC Merced tied the match in the 74th minute before Kellyann Rodriguez scored the game-winner in the 79th minute off Yancey's second assist of the afternoon. Stan State finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Sunday's match will be the third all-time meeting between the Central Valley rivals and the second at Warrior Stadium.

Both of Stan State's matches this week will be streamed live on FloCollege. Friday's noon road match at San Francisco State will be available on FloCollege, while Sunday's 2 p.m. home match against Central Valley rival UC Merced will be available on FloCollege and BlueChip Broadcasting, with Kyle Morrison calling the action from Warrior Stadium.

Up Next
Following this weekend's matches at San Francisco State and against UC Merced, Stan State remains home to host No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at Warrior Stadium. The Warriors then travel to Atherton to face Menlo on Saturday, Oct. 17, at noon.

Stan State visits Chico State on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. before returning home for Senior Day against Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. at Warrior Stadium. Prior to the match, the Warriors will recognize seniors Zara Mujica, Mandy Thao, Alexi Ochoa, Kayla Perez, Olivia Kamm, Aliah Avila, Francesca Hahn and Amanda Do.

The Warriors conclude the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 29, with an 11 a.m. road match at Fresno Pacific.
