TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State women's soccer continues CCAA play with a pair of matches this weekend, beginning Friday, Oct. 2, when the Warriors host Cal State San Bernardino at 7 p.m. at Warrior Stadium. Stan State then travels to Alameda on Sunday, Oct. 4, to face Cal State East Bay at 2 p.m. at the UCSF Health Oakland Roots & Soul Performance Center.

James Guides Warriors Through First CCAA Season
First-year head coach Adam James has guided Stan State to a 4-2-2 overall record and a 3-1 mark through the first four matches of CCAA play. The Warriors have nine conference points and recently put together a six-match unbeaten streak that included four victories and two draws. James joined Stan State after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Azusa Pacific, where he helped the Cougars make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and capture the 2025 PacWest Championship. His coaching background also includes time at Cal State San Marcos and San Diego State.

Weekend Recap
Stan State split its two-match CCAA road trip in Southern California, earning a 2-1 victory over No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles on Friday before falling 1-0 at Cal State San Marcos on Sunday. Olivia Maragos and Aliah Avila scored in the victory over the Golden Eagles, with Avila's goal in the 69th minute proving to be the game-winner. Zara Mujica made six saves in the win.

On Sunday, the Warriors and Cougars played scoreless soccer for more than 66 minutes before Abby LaRocca scored the match's only goal. Stan State placed five of its six shots on goal in the loss. The setback snapped the Warriors' six-match unbeaten streak and their 3-0 start to CCAA play. Stan State finished the weekend 1-1 and enters this week 4-2-2 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA with nine points.

Warriors Overall
Stan State enters the week 4-2-2 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA with nine conference points through four matches. The Warriors have scored 11 goals while allowing six through eight matches and have outshot their opponents 91-84, including a 54-43 advantage in shots on goal.

Maragos leads Stan State with four goals, two assists and 10 points, while Avila has three goals, two assists and eight points. Kyndra Obermeyer has added two goals, with Hibah Elbeshity and Franchesca Maiden each scoring once. Mujica has played all 720 minutes in goal, recording 37 saves, an .860 save percentage, a 0.75 goals-against average and three shutouts.

CCAA Standings After Second Week of Conference Play
After the second week of CCAA play, Chico State leads the conference with 10 points at 3-0-1. Stan State and Cal Poly Humboldt are tied with nine points at 3-1, followed by Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino and UC Merced with eight points apiece. Fresno Pacific currently occupies the seventh and final postseason position with seven points.

Stan State is just one point behind conference-leading Chico State heading into this weekend. The Warriors host Cal State San Bernardino, which sits one point behind them with eight points, on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Cal State East Bay on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Alameda. The top seven teams advance to the CCAA Tournament, which begins with quarterfinal matches at campus sites on Sunday, Nov. 1. The semifinals and championship will be held Nov. 5 and Nov. 7 at Kellogg Stadium on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona.

Among the CCAA Leaders
Stan State ranks among the top seven in the CCAA in several team categories. The Warriors are fifth in scoring at 1.38 goals per match with 11 goals through eight matches, fifth in goals allowed at 0.75 per match and fifth with a plus-0.63 scoring margin. Stan State's .860 save percentage ranks third in the conference, while its 37 saves are tied for third.

Individually, Maragos and Avila rank among the CCAA's top 10 in several offensive categories. Maragos is second with four goals, fifth with 10 points, fifth with 12 shots on goal and eighth with 19 shots. Avila ranks first with 15 shots on goal, fourth with two game-winning goals, sixth with three goals, sixth with eight points and ninth with 18 shots. Mandy Thao, Avila and Maragos rank eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively, with two assists apiece.

Mujica ranks among the CCAA's top six in all four listed goalkeeper categories. She is second in the conference with 4.63 saves per match, fifth with a 0.75 goals-against average and fifth with 37 saves and an .860 save percentage. Mujica also ranks sixth with three shutouts through eight matches.

Warriors in the Record Book
Avila continues to climb the Stan State career offensive record book. The senior is tied with Erin Taylor (2002-05) for fifth in program history with 20 career goals and ranks fifth with 19 assists. Avila also ranks fifth with 60 career points. Her game-winning goal in the Warriors' 2-1 victory at No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles was the 13th of her career, moving her into sole possession of second place in program history behind Karenee Demerey's 29.

Mujica also continues her climb among Stan State's career goalkeepers. Mujica has 105 career saves, ranking ninth in program history. She also ranks eighth in program history with nine career shutouts.

Home Field
Stan State has been tough to beat at Warrior Stadium in recent seasons. Since the start of the 2021 season, the Warriors are 33-13-8 at home. Stan State is unbeaten at Warrior Stadium this season at 2-0-1, including CCAA victories over Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Warriors return home Friday to host Cal State San Bernardino at 7 p.m.

Regional and National Recognition
Stan State was ranked No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II West Region poll released Sept. 22. The Warriors have appeared in the regional top 10 multiple times this season, including rankings of ninth and 10th.
In the Sept. 22 West Region poll, Cal Poly Pomona was No. 1, followed by Cal State Los Angeles, Seattle Pacific, Simon Fraser, Concordia Irvine, Western Washington, Point Loma, Cal Poly Humboldt, Stan State and UC Merced.

Three West Region teams were also ranked nationally, led by No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona, No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles and No. 23 Seattle Pacific, while Simon Fraser and Concordia Irvine received votes.
Stan State went 1-1 last weekend, including a 2-1 road victory over then-No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles. The next United Soccer Coaches national and West Region rankings are scheduled to be released Tuesday.

Strength of Schedule
Stan State's first eight opponents have combined for a 26-22-23 record. Only two of the Warriors' eight opponents — Central Washington and Cal State Dominguez Hills — currently have losing records. Stan State is 4-2-2 overall, with its results including a 2-1 road victory over then-No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles and a draw at Point Loma.

Scouting Cal State San Bernardino
Cal State San Bernardino enters Friday's match 3-2-3 overall and unbeaten in CCAA play at 2-0-2. The Coyotes have been especially strong defensively, allowing just three goals through eight matches while recording five shutouts. They have not allowed a goal in conference play, opening CCAA action with a 1-0 victory over San Francisco State, a scoreless draw at Cal State San Marcos, a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt and a scoreless draw against Chico State.

Seven different Coyotes have scored one goal apiece this season. Raylene Alcaraz leads the team with four points on one goal and two assists, while Graciella Baird has one goal and one assist. Maya Alston leads Cal State San Bernardino with 22 shots and 11 shots on goal.

Bella Ortiz has started five matches in goal and carries a 0.20 goals-against average and .957 save percentage with 22 saves and four shutouts. Austyn Brooks has appeared in the other three matches, recording a 0.67 goals-against average, nine saves and one shutout. As a team, the Coyotes have a 0.38 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.

Series History vs. Cal State San Bernardino
Cal State San Bernardino leads the all-time series with Stan State 13-10-4, while the Warriors hold a 7-6-1 advantage in matches played in Turlock. The series has been evenly matched recently, with Stan State going 4-4-2 over the last 10 meetings.

The teams played to a 2-2 draw on Oct. 10, 2025, in San Bernardino. Maragos gave Stan State an early lead with a goal just 2:01 into the match off an assist from Jocelin Roa. The Coyotes tied the match in the eighth minute before Stan State regained the lead on a team goal in the 16th. Cal State San Bernardino answered in the 20th minute, and neither team scored over the final 70 minutes.

The last meeting at Warrior Stadium came on Oct. 25, 2024, when Stan State defeated Cal State San Bernardino 2-0. Avila scored the game-winner in the 37th minute off assists from Grace Fabionar and Sabrina Cabrera. Kellyann Rodriguez added an insurance goal in the 80th minute off an assist from Haylee Heffner. The Warriors recorded six saves in posting the shutout. Stan State has won three of the last four meetings against the Coyotes at Warrior Stadium.

Scouting Cal State East Bay
Cal State East Bay enters the week 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA. The Pioneers opened conference play with consecutive 1-0 road losses to Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt before earning a 2-0 victory at Menlo. They are coming off a 1-0 home loss to Fresno Pacific on Sunday. East Bay has scored 10 goals while allowing 16 through eight matches.

Taylor Hodges leads the Pioneers with three goals, two assists and eight points, while Kella Folkerts has three goals and one assist for seven points. Kaylie McKee has added two goals and one assist for five points. Hodges leads East Bay with 15 shots, while Folkerts has put a team-high nine shots on goal.

Bianca Avila and Yvette Torres have shared time in goal. Avila has played 420 minutes with a 2.36 goals-against average and .645 save percentage, while Torres has played nearly 300 minutes with a 1.50 goals-against average and .783 save percentage. As a team, East Bay has a 2.00 goals-against average and .704 save percentage with one shutout.

Series History vs. Cal State East Bay
Stan State leads the all-time series with Cal State East Bay 20-5-4 and is 6-4-3 in road matches against the Pioneers. The Warriors are 6-2-2 over the last 10 meetings and hold a 14-4-1 advantage in CCAA contests.

The teams met twice last season at Warrior Stadium. East Bay won the regular-season meeting 2-1 on Oct. 3. After a scoreless first half, Morgan Pearson converted a penalty kick in the 55th minute and Folkerts scored in the 59th to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Shauna Johnston cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 70th minute off assists from Abby Winslow and Maragos. Stan State finished with a 15-13 advantage in shots.

The Warriors answered in the first round of the 2025 CCAA Tournament on Nov. 9, defeating East Bay 3-2 at Warrior Stadium. Johnston opened the scoring in the sixth minute off an assist from Haylee Sousa before Roa converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute. After East Bay pulled within 2-1, Rodriguez scored in the 75th minute off an assist from Avila for what proved to be the game-winning goal. Mujica also saved an East Bay penalty kick in the second half.

Stan State's most recent road meeting with the Pioneers came on Nov. 3, 2024, when East Bay earned a 2-0 victory at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward. Abigail Kern scored just 2:24 into the match before Gabby Rodil added an insurance goal in the 78th minute. Stan State held an 11-8 advantage in shots, with both teams putting six attempts on goal.

Sunday's meeting will be played in Alameda at the UCSF Health Oakland Roots & Soul Performance Center.
