Alexis Cervantes and women's cross country's
Stevie Holguin have been named this week's Stan State Housing and Residential Life Warriors of the Week after leading their respective teams during the Warriors' home soccer matches and the University of San Francisco Invitational.
ALEXIS CERVANTES – MEN'S SOCCER
Cervantes led Stan State offensively during its two home matches, highlighted by the first two-goal performance of his collegiate career in the Warriors' 3-1 victory over Saint Martin's in Thursday's home opener. Cervantes broke a scoreless tie at the 62:25 mark to give Stan State a 1-0 lead. After Saint Martin's tied the match and the Warriors regained the lead, Cervantes scored again at the 89:36 mark to secure the 3-1 victory.
He finished the Saint Martin's match with a match-high eight shots, including six on goal. Cervantes finished the two-match week with two goals, four points, 10 shots and six shots on goal as Stan State defeated Saint Martin's and battled Simon Fraser to a 1-1 draw.
Cervantes and the Warriors continue their six-match home stand this week with a pair of non-conference matches at Warrior Stadium. Stan State will host Hawai'i Pacific at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, before facing Dominican at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The Warriors will begin CCAA play the following week with two more home matches, hosting Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, and Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20.
STEVIE HOLGUIN – WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Holguin led the No. 12 nationally ranked Stan State women's cross country team to a second-place finish Friday afternoon at the University of San Francisco Invitational at Hellman Hollow. Holguin finished sixth overall in the women's 6K with a time of 21:00.2 and was the top non-Division I runner in the field. Her time was just 3.2 seconds off her collegiate-best 6K mark of 20:57.0 from last season.
Behind Holguin, Stan State totaled 82 points and finished as the top non-Division I team in the field. The Warriors finished ahead of Division I programs California Baptist, California, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis, Sacramento State, Pacific and San Jose State.
Holguin was named the FloCollege/CCAA Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Monday. Holguin and the Warriors return to competition Saturday, Sept. 12, when Stan State hosts the Kim Duyst Twilight at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres. The meet will begin at 5:15 p.m., with the men's 8K race scheduled for 8:30 p.m. and the women's 6K race set for 9 p.m.
