SEASIDE — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team opened its California Collegiate Athletic Association season on the road and pair a doubleheader to an up-and-coming Cal State Monterey Bay program, 2-1 and 3-2, Friday afternoon.
The Warriors managed just four hits in the opener in losing 2-1 in a pitchers' dual and was held to three hits in the nightcap in the 3-2 defeat. All three three runs by the Warriors came on solo home runs on Friday with
Alyssa Guzman belting two.
With the twinbill sweep, the Warriors dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA.
Jessica Gaumnitz suffered the loss in game one after allowing a solo homer to Ashley Trotter in the second inning. In the fourth, the Otters added another run for a 2-0 lead. CSUS managed to get a run back in the seventh inning on a Guzman solo home run -- her first of the season -- to center field.
Gaumnitz, now 2-2, allowed two runs on four hits and fanned six in the defeat. Guzman finished with a 2-for-3 game.
In the nightcap, Nikki Deleon got the start and scattered 10 hits. After CSUMB took a 2-0 lead, the Warriors tied the score in the fifth inning with back-to-back home runs by Guzman and
Kimiko Wright. It was Wright's team-leading fourth of the year.
In the Monterey Bay eighth two consecutive walks set up a game-winning single by Channing Peebles.
Weather permitting, the Otters and the Warriors will square-off in another twinbill, scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m.
