Warriors win fourth straight; Loretelli homers again

3/15/2008 9:29:12 PM

SEASIDE – Junior left fielder Kyle Loretelli continued his dominance of California Collegiate Athletic Association pitchers Saturday, going 4-for-8 with four RBIs and a homerun, his fifth in seven games, to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and lead the No. 12 Cal State Stanislaus Warriors to a 6-5, 7-6 doubleheader sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay.

The sweep moves the Warriors' overall record to 20-5. They are now 13-2 in CCAA play and have won 15 of their last 17 games including four straight. The Otters fall to 7-17 overall and 5-10 in the CCAA.

Loretelli quickly forgot about Friday's 1-for-4 performance where he struck out twice, blowing up for four hits and four RBIs Saturday, including a double and his seventh homerun of the season.

Warrior closer Andrew Troncale earned a save in both games, closing out an eight inning performance by game one starter Eric Federico (3-1) and coming for the final out of game two for his sixth save of the season. Troncale is two saves away from the Warrior single-season record of eight.

The Warriors played catch up once again in game one, as they fell behind early after the Otters posted three runs in the first inning. Federico would settle down and give up just one more run in the next seven innings with six strikeouts. The Warriors pulled to within one run in the third inning by scoring two runs, but the Otters added a run in the seventh and took a 4-2 lead into the ninth.

As in 10 previous games, the Warriors refused to lie down in the ninth down two runs, and posted four runs to go ahead 6-4. The tying run and go-ahead runs were scored via push bunts. The Otters would get a run back in the bottom half of the ninth, but Warrior closer Andrew Troncale came in and shut them down for his fifth save of the season.

The story was reversed in game two as the Warriors jumped out ahead of the Otters 7-3, but three Otter runs in the bottom of the sixth made things interesting again. A total of four Warrior relief pitchers did the job in holding the Otters scoreless the rest of the way, but it took a thrilling bottom of the seventh play to earn the final out.

With a runner on first and two outs, trailing 7-6, the Otters drove a deep ball to right-center field. The runner tried to score from first base, but a perfect relay from center fielder Dennis Wolfe, shortstop Jeff Bellotti and catcher Chase Perez nailed the runner at home to end the game.

Freshman Andrew Stueve (2-1) started game two and went 5 1/3 innings to earn his second win of the season.

The final game of the four-game series will be played Sunday at Warrior Field in Turlock, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
