NNU edges Warriors in 10 innings

NAMPA, Idaho – Junior first baseman Jimmy VanBeek singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Northwest Nazarene University baseball team defeated the 11th-ranked Cal State Stanislaus Warriors 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Elmore Vail Field in Nampa.

The Crusaders (16-10) took three-of-four games against the Warriors (22-8) in the NCAA Division II West Region non-conference series. The Warriors, who have been riding winning streaks while playing at home, went 1-3 on the road and is now 5-5 playing away from Warrior Field this season. Stanislaus will return home for a four-game set beginning on Friday against CCAA foe Cal State San Bernardino.

Nate Slonaker (2-1) earned the win for NNU, pitching 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Kyle Holloway.  Slonaker held the Warriors to two hits, one in the ninth and one in the 10th, striking out two.

Holloway scattered five hits over his 8 2/3 innings of work, holding the potent CSUS offense to just one run, a home run by Warrior first baseman Adam Fonville in the fourth.

Andrew Troncale (3-1) took the loss for CSUS, surrendering two walks and a pair of singles in the tenth.  Troncale worked in relief of CSUS starter Matt Costa who went 6 1/3 innings and middle reliever Andrew DeMott who pitched 1 2/3 innings.

Troncale held the Crusaders to just five hits and one run, a single tally in the fifth when back-to-back singles by Ryan Bailey and Cole Smith set up a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Ryne Phillips, plating Bailey who had advanced to third on Smith's single.
