TURLOCK —
Kimiko Wright picked up the Warriors offense when they needed it the most as No. 22 Cal State Stanislaus pulled out a doubleheader split against San Francisco State in dramatic fashion Saturday at Warrior Softball Field.
With the bases loaded, Wright took the first pitch to deep right-center field to score the game-winning run as the Warriors won game two 2-1 after losing 1-0 behind a two-hitter in the opener.
With the four-game series split, the Warriors are now 25-19 overall and 18-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stanislaus remains in second place after Humboldt State swept the four-game set over UC San Diego over the weekend. San Francisco State is 26-18 overall and 12-12 in league play.
After ending a 17-plus innings of scoreless drought in the fourth, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the final frame. San Francisco State's Lea Cardena drew a leadoff walk and was moved over on a sac bunt. Pinch hitter McKenna Coelho then hit a shot up the middle that was beautifully fielded by CSUS second baseman
Alicia Reid to get the out and saved the tying run from scoring.
The following Gator, Danielle Chapman, tied the game when she hit a grounder up the middle that was stabbed by diving Warrior shortstop
Meghan Franksen, but no play was made. Chapman would advance to second on a wild pitch, but Jenn Arnold got Karolyn Gubbine to strike out looking to end the inning.
In the home half of the seventh, tied 1-1, the Warriors loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Reid then was hit by Kendra Wood's first pitch to win the game, but Reid was called back for not attempting to elude the pitch. After Reid pops out, Wright took Wood's first offering opposite to right-center to score
Alyssa Guzman for the win.
Arnold again pitched brilliantly in game two, scattering six hits -- two in the first four innings -- and struck out two for the win to improve to 12-11. She got out of a jam in the fifth with the runners at the corners by getting Gubbine to ground out to second. That was the only time a Gator reached third before the seventh inning.
Offensively, Arnold went 3-for-3 with a double and RBI — she also had one of the team's two hits in game one.
In the opener, the Warriors managed just two hits against SFSU's Ashley Jackson. Jackson struck out seven in the two-hit shutout win for San Francisco State. The Gators got the only run they needed in game one a Cardenas home run in the second — her second in as many days — off Warrior ace
Jessica Gaumnitz.
Gaumnitz would settle down after the home run and retried 13 consecutive batters, but picked up the hard-luck loss as the Stanislaus offense went cold again.
With two straight 1-0 defeats and not scoring until the fourth in the second game on Saturday, the Warriors' string of scoreless innings reached 17 2/3 innings.
Stanislaus will take next weekend off before hosting its final regular season home series on April 25-26 against Cal State San Bernardino.
