BEAUMONT -- Cal State San Bernardino erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning of the second game of their CCAA conference doubleheader with Cal State Stanislaus to earn an 11-2 victory over the Warriors. The game was halted in the fifth by the eight-run mercy rule.
In the opener, the Warriors staked themselves to 10-0 lead through 4.5 innings, but the Coyotes rallied for eight runs but Cal State Stanislaus held on for a 10-8 win. Both teams are now 1-1 in CCAA play. The Warriors are now 6-2 on the season and the Coyotes are 4-7.
The two teams will finish what they started on Friday at 11:20 a,m. and 1:20 p.m. Sunday at Noble Creek Park softball complex. Friday's first game of a doubleheader was suspended in the top of the fourth inning with the Warriors ahead 4-2 and that game will be finished before the teams play the rained out second game.
In Saturday's second game, the Coyotes took an early 1-0 lead on Priscilla Curiel's inside the park home run to deep left center, but the Warriors rallied to take the lead 2-1 in the thirde on a solo home run by
Britney Borba and a Coyotes throwing error on an attempted pickoff at third base.
CSUSB then sent 15 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring 10 times. The biggest blow was a base-loaded, three-RBI triple by freshman shortstop Courtney Wilhelms.
Senior right-hander Debbie Shisler allowed just four hits and struck out six in 4.5 innings to pick up the victory. Warriors starter
Jennifer Arnold took the loss. Her season record is now 3-1.
In the first game, senior
Jessica Gaumnitz had a no-hitter and a shutout going into the bottom of the fifth inning and her team leading 10-0, when the Coyotes finally reached her for four runs. Felicia Cervantes drove in three runs of the runs with a bases-clearing double. CSUSB added four more in the sixth, two of them on a double by Curiel.
Stanislaus scored six times in the second on four hits en route to the win. Ashley Genseal had two singles and four RBI in the contest for the Warriors.
Erica McIntyre and
Britney Borba also drove in a pair of runs. Gaumnitz picked up the win with relief help from
Stacey Hains and Arnold.
