TURLOCK -- Friday at Warrior Field the No. 2 ranked Cal State Stanislaus baseball team began its pursuit of the postseason against the same team it clinched a berth against in 2008. In both teams' California Collegiate Athletic Association opener, the Warriors beat the Broncos 12-2.
The win is the Warriors' ninth straight, and more importantly, their ninth win in a row home, tying a single season school record for consecutive home victories also set in 2008 and 1979. They are now 9-1 overall and 1-0 in CCAA play. The Broncos fall to 6-4 and 0-1 in the CCAA.
Early on the game appeared to be a pitchers' duel, as Broncos starter Brad Wilson (1-1) was perfect through the first three innings. Warriors starter
Spencer Snodgrass (2-0) only gave up two hits through the first three innings, but would eventually pitch his second straight complete game with less than 100 pitches, this time going nine innings and giving up two runs on eight hits and striking out two.
Wilson fell apart in the fourth inning when he loaded the bases with no body out and allowed a two-RBI single by
Seth Hudson and an RBI single by
Jake Oketani. A sacrifice fly made it 4-0 and the Warriors never looked back.
The Warriors would get three runs in the fifth and seventh innings and another two in the sixth inning to run up the score. The Broncos got lone runs in the fifth and seventh innings and were led offensively by third baseman Richard McDowell who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Jake Thelen went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Zach Cadet went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs and
Kyle Loretelli was 2-for-5 and two RBIs.
The defending CCAA Pitcher of the Week Snodgrass dropped his ERA by 0.2 points while Loretelli raised his average from .345 to .353.
The two teams continue their four-game series at 11 a.m. Saturday with a doubleheader and another single game beginning at noon Sunday.
