Defensive struggles bring doubleheader split

2/21/2009 6:29:55 PM

TURLOCK -- A total of 11 errors on the day made things hard on No. 2 Cal State Stanislaus during Saturday's doubleheader, as a nine-game winning streak came to an end in game one, 6-1. A 6-4 victory in the nightcap earned a split against Cal Poly Pomona at Warrior Field.

With the split the Warriors got their 10th win of the season and moved to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Broncos go to 7-5 and 1-2 in the CCAA.

Sophomore Andrew Stueve (2-1) started game one and pitched well, striking out eight and walking just one, his first walk of the year, but the defense behind him could not keep baserunners at bay, as four errors committed during his 6 2/3 innings extended innings and kept Stueve on the mound in his first loss of the season.

Opposite of Stueve was the Broncos' Joshua Krist (2-1), who threw a gem of a game despite help from the Warriors' lacking defense. Krist threw a complete game three-hitter, giving up just one run and striking out 11. Krist was hot right out of the gate, striking out the side in the first inning and was still going strong in the ninth, getting two of his 11 Ks.

Krist kept the Warriors at bay and held on to a slim 1-0 lead for most of the game until the Broncos came up with four runs in the seventh. The win is Krist's second of the season.

Most of the Warriors' errors in the game were throwing errors, extending base runners' time on the paths. All of Stueve's runs were earned, and the final blow for him was a two-run homerun to deep left field by Nick Tanos in the seventh inning that put the Broncos up 5-0.

The Warriors' lone run came in the bottom half of the seventh when Joseph Pilatti answered with a homerun of his own, a two-out solo shot to right center that made the score 5-1. The Broncos get the run back in the eighth for the final score, 6-1. Pillati continues to swing a hot bat, now with three homeruns on the season and a .522 average and 10 RBIs.

In game two the Warriors busted out their big bats early. A three-run homerun by Kyle Loretelli in the bottom of the first and a two-run bomb by Zach Cadet in the bottom of the second gave the Warriors a 5-0 lead, but the defensive bug would bite them again in the top of the third.

Cal Poly Pomona pushed across four runs in the third, all but one of them earned against Warriors starter Dakota Watts (3-0). The Warriors committed three errors in the inning, all three of them throwing errors.

Watts would hold onto the slim 5-4 lead. The Warriors would get an insurance run in the bottom of the third on a squeeze bunt by Jake Oketani which scored Loretelli to make the score 6-4. Eric Federico came in and pitched three innings of effective relief, striking out three and giving up just one hit to earn the save and hand Watts his third win of the year.

Cadet ended the day 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Chase Perez went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, also Loretelli went 1-for-2 with the three-run homerun and two runs scored. Marcus Makia and Joe Villa both went 2-for-4 for the Broncos.

The Warriors and Broncos will finish the CCAA-opening four-game series at 11 a.m. Sunday with a single game. The game was originally scheduled for noon but with rain in the forecast the game has been moved up.
