Baseball falls to Sonoma in season opener

2/3/2009 6:52:05 PM

TURLOCK -- There would be no late-inning heroics for the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team Tuesday afternoon, an occurrence that became quite customary in 2008, as the Warriors lost a close one, 3-1, to defending West Region and CCAA champion Sonoma State in a non-conference game at Warrior Field.

The game was the season opener for both teams. Sonoma State improves to 1-0 on the season while the Warriors fall to 0-1. The win was the fourth-straight for the Seawolves against the Warriors dating back to the 2008 postseason.

Cal State Stanislaus starting pitcher Eric Federico took the mound Tuesday as the Warriors' starter and got into trouble in a majority of his five innings pitched. Federico gave up seven hits and two runs, one in the second and one in the fourth, while striking out two in taking the loss, his second straight against Sonoma State dating back to the Warriors' final game of 2008, a 10-4 loss in the West Region Championship Tournament.

Senior Gary Moran, a 6-foot, 8-inch force on the mound for the Seawolves, earned the win by striking out five in five innings and giving up just four hits and one run. Mark Pestorich gave Moran a run in the second with an RBI single and Leo Avila added another RBI single in the fourth. The Seawolves would get a third run in the top of the seventh on a fielder's choice by Ryan Stevens.

The Warriors' lone run came in the bottom half of the fourth inning on a groundout by catcher Seth Hudson, which scored Zach Cadet after he led off the inning with a single. The run cut the Sonoma State lead to one run, but it was as close as the Warriors would get.

The Warriors will continue their season opening homestand this weekend with a four-game series against Great Northwest Athletic Conference member St. Martin's beginning with a single game at 2 p.m.
