Stanislaus, UCSD split softball doubleheader

3/13/2009 6:40:06 PM

LA JOLLA -- The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors were on base a lot on Friday. Unfortunately, too many runners were left on base as the Warriors split a doubleheader with host UC San Diego.

Jessica Gaumnitz pitched a gem -- allowing just one hit in the opener -- as the Warriors won 4-0 before dropping the nightcap 6-5.

With the split, the Warriors are 14-6 overall and 9-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The nightcap loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Stanislaus. UC San Diego is now 13-10, 7-6 in the CCAA.

In the opener, Gaumnitz was untouchable as she did not allow the UCSD hit until the sixth inning. Nicole Sarri singled after a leadoff walk to Jenni Habib to set up a second and third with no-one situation. Gaumnitz calmly got out of the jam with a pop-out, strikeout and a line-out to end the UCSD short-lived rally.

Meanwhile, the Warriors offense was aggressive, scattering 10 hits and seemingly was just a couple of key hits away from blowing the game wide-open. After taking a 2-0 lead in the second on a Kimiko Wright double, the Warriors tagged on runs in the fourth and sixth for the 4-run cushion.

However, the Warriors were tagging UCSD pitchers Lauren Chastain and Tess Granath but allowed them to stay close. Stanislaus stranded a total of 10 baserunners and eight in scoring position.

Wright doubled twice and drove in three runs and Erica McIntyre went 3-for-4 to lead the offense. Hailey Torba was 2-for-3 as the designated player.

Gaumnitz, the CCAA pitcher of the week, has now gone 23 2/3 innings without allowing a run and only allowed three hits in the last 18 innings. She is now 8-3 on the season.

In the nightcap, UCSD got on top 2-0 in the first but the Warriors responded with three runs in the second with McIntyre driving in two runs and Britney Borba bringing in a run with a double.

After leading 4-2, UCSD would get even in the fourth with a Kristyn Lesovsky double to the centerfield fence for two runs. Stanislaus would take the lead again in the sixth, but UCSD pushed through with two runs on three hits and a CSUS error -- with the game-winner scoring on a double steal.

In game two, the Warriors left eight runners on base. McIntyre went 2-for-3 and drove in two scores to cap off a 5-for-8 day.

The same two teams will play another doubleheader to wrap-up the four-game series. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
