Tritons out-pitch Warriors to win two

LA JOLLA -- The top-ranked Cal State Stanislaus baseball team is finding out the difficulty of playing on the road in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

In their first road series of the season, the Warriors found themselves having to avoid a four-game sweep after losing both ends of the doubleheader on Saturday.

Matt Rossman went eight-strong and the Tritons got to the Warrior bullpen for five late runs for a 8-3 game one win. Trevor Decker then tossed a seven-inning no-hitter to blank Stanislaus, 6-0, in the nightcap.

With the three-game skid, the Warriors are now 16-6 overall and 8-5 in the CCAA while No. 23 UC San Diego held home-field advantage and improved to 14-7 overall and 11-4 in league play.

After Kyle Loretelli took Rossman's first pitch of the game deep to centerfield and a two-run homer in the third inning by Jacob Thelen, the Warriors took a 3-1 lead into the UCSD third. Unfortunately, that was the last time CSUS would score. In fact, over the next 14 innings, the Warriors managed two hits off UCSD pitching.

Rossman would only allow two more singles from the fourth through eighth innings en route to the win.

Andrew Stueve (3-2) got the loss in the opener as he gave up four runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Tony Smith and Andrew Troncale finished the game on the mound for Stanislaus.

In game two, Rossman would be up-staged by teammate Decker who earned a 7-inning no-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks. The Warriors hammered Decker but flew-out 10 times and grounded out seven times.

Previously undefeated Dakota Watts suffered the loss in game two, lasting just two innings and scattered seven hits. He gave up six runs, struck out three and walked two and dropped to 5-1.

UCSD got a two-out double from Garrett Imeson in the first inning before taking a 4-0 lead after one. Watts was chased after giving up two more runs on three hits in the second innings.

The Warriors had played every game in February at home and took a one-day trip for a twinbill at San Francisco last weekend. CSUS is now 2-3 on the road and 14-3 at home.

Cal State Stanislaus will try and avoid the sweep on Sunday with a single game against UC San Diego at noon.
