UC San Diego slips by Warriors for sweep

LA JOLLA -- Things just didn't go the Warriors way over the weekend and on Sunday as the UC San Diego Tritons successfully defended home field.

No. 23 UC San Diego rallied from 4-2 down with back-to-back homers en route a 6-5 win over No. 1 Cal State Stanislaus to complete the four-game series sweep. UCSD, now 15-7 overall and 12-4 in the CCAA, sits atop of the CCAA standings after taking all four games from the Warriors.

Cal State Stanislaus dropped to 16-7 overall and 8-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, hanging on to fourth place. The Warriors' season won't get much easier as they will have to travel again next weekend to San Bernardino.

"They just out-play us this weekend, down to the last pitch," CSUS head coach Kenny Leonesio said.

The Tritons bounced on top on Sunday with a two-run first inning, including a leadoff home run by Vance Albitz. Cal State Stanislaus, though, tied it in the third with a two-out, two-run homer by Jake Oketani. Oketani's home run to right was one of five homers on the day that went to right field, including four down the right-field line with a gust blowing out to right.

Looking to avoid the sweep, Stanislaus rallied for two more runs in the sixth when Zach Cadet hit a two-run triple to right to go ahead 4-2. With two runners in scoring position, Kyle Loretelli was called out on strikes on a high-pitch and the tide again turned in favor of UCSD.

In the home half of the sixth, UCSD put together three runs, including back-to-back homers down the right field line by Evan Kehoe and Matt Cantele. With runners on the corners and two outs, UCSD scored on a double-steal play to go up 5-4.

UCSD added a run in the seventh for a little extra insurance to set up a dramatic ninth for the Warriors.

Cal State Stanislaus did not let-down and battled to the end as they rallied in the ninth. With two outs, the second coming on a bare-handed play by UCSD's third baseman to just beat out Jacob Thelen, Loretelli homered to right to make it 6-5. Leandro Dottavio would follow with a double down the left field line to bring up Oketani, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs on the day.

UCSD elected to intentionally walk Oketani to face David Contreras, who flew out to center to end the game.

Loretelli finished the day 3-for-5 and with his 20th career home run tied for second on the CSUS all-time list with A.J. Valentine and Brent Miller.

Cadet also had two hits, a double and a triple, and drove in two runs.

Starter Derek Eaton pitched five innings and reliever Eric Federico picked up the loss allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of work.
