TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team got its busy week off to a great start with a doubleheader sweep over Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday.
An offensive explosion gave the Warriors a 10-0 win in the first game and a strong pitching performance by
Jennifer Arnold finished off the sweep with a 4-1 game-two win.
With the victories, Cal State Stanislaus improved to 18-10 overall heading into tomorrow's match-up against Hawaii Pacific. Hawaii Pacific (27-5) will bring its No. 11 national ranking – No. 2 in the West Region — to Turlock for a 1 p.m. start on Wednesday.
The Warriors jumped all over Hawaii Hilo (17-16) in the first two innings of game one on Tuesday for an early 9-0 lead. Two triples in their first three at-bats got things rolling as the Warriors put-up a five-spot in the first. After
Erica McIntyre led off the game with a triple to right, with one out,
Meghan Franksen belted a triple of her own to the right-center gap to score McIntyre, who extended her hitting streak to 12 games. Three walks and a run scoring on a wild pitch later,
Kimiko Wright singled through the left side to score two more for the 5-0 lead.
Four extra-base hits in the second inning gave Stanislaus four more runs with Franksen doubling home McIntyre who walked.
Ashlee Genseal then doubled to right, Arnold doubled off the center field wall and Wright doubled to right to cap off the rally.
Those runs were plenty for Stanislaus starter
Jessica Gaumnitz. She allowed just two hits in five innings, struck out seven and walked two to improve her personal record to 10-5 this season.
Wright would drive in another run in the fourth to finish the game 3-for-3 with four RBIs. In all, CSUS had three doubles and three triples and out-hit UHH 10-2 in the opener.
In game two, Arnold and UHH starter Amber Waracka were locked in a pitching duel early until Hilo got on the board first in the top of the fourth with Tessa Truong scoring with the bases loaded on a fielder's choice.
Stanislaus answered right back with two runs in the fourth as
Brittany Balanesi walked and stole second and scored on another double by Franksen. Franksen would then steal third and later scored on a single by Arnold.
The Warriors added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth that included a RBI single by
Britney Borba. Genseal led the Warriors with a 2-for-3 game two.
Arnold went 6 2/3 innings as she was briefly relieved in the seventh by
Stacey Hains and reentered to finish the game. Arnold allowed just one run on five hits, struck out five — including four in the first two innings — and walked one to improve to 6-3.
Stanislaus, which is hosting the Eighth Annual Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno this weekend, will play up 12 games this week. The tournament begins Friday with games at Warrior Softball Field and Pedretti Sports Complex.
