Warriors win two nail-bitters in walkoff fashion

TURLOCK — For most of the day, the Warriors weren't able to string enough hits together for a big inning. But twice on Friday the Cal State Stanislaus softball team rallied from behind to sweep Chico State with its last at-bat.

Erica McIntyre scored the game-winner in game one on a Kimiko Wright sacrifice fly and Jennie Arnold dove in to score the winner in the nightcap on a passed ball as the Warriors beat Chico State, 3-2 and 4-3 in 11 innings.

With the pair of victories, Cal State Stanislaus improved to 11-5 overall and 6-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Chico State dips to 5-12 and 3-7 in the CCAA.

"I am so pleased with how (we) hung in there and kept battling and never let up," CSUS head coach Jan Schefkowitz said. "We just stay calm and keep playing."

The nightcap was literally almost in the dark as the sun set behind the dorms to the west of the Warrior Softball Field when the 11th inning started. After reliever Stacey Hains put the Wildcats down in order with three ground outs, the Warriors came up determined to finally strike with a 3-3 tie.

Arnold, who started the game in the pitching circle and moved to first, led off the 11th with a single to center. Arnold then aggressively advanced to third on a McIntyre single just over the second baseman's head. On a swing and miss by Britney Borba, the Chico catcher let the ball get away as Arnold slide in under the tag of pitcher Jessica McDermott for the game-winner.

McIntyre finished game two with three hits in five at-bats. She also played many key defensive plays at third base. Arnold was 2-for-5 and scored twice. In the circle, Arnold pitched the first six innings and allowed three runs — only one earned — on eight hits and struck out two for the no decision. Jessica Gaumnitz pitched four innings and allowed just one-hit and Hains came in in the 11th to pick up her first win.

Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, the Warriors got two unearned runs to even the score. Arnold singled and later scored on a Borba single and Wright tied it with a two-out single to right to bring in Borba from second.

In the first game, Wright also drove in the game-winner on a deep fly ball to right that scored McIntyre in the bottom of the seventh. After being held to just one hit in the first five innings and trailing 2-0, Stanislaus finally put a single and a double together to rally for two runs in the sixth.

Gaumnitz got the win in game one going the distance and allowed two runs on six hits while fanning six Wildcats. She improved her record to 6-3.

The same two teams will play another doubleheader to complete the four-game series on Saturday. First pitch of game one is at noon.
