TURLOCK -- An untimely San Francisco State error in the sixth inning broke a tie in an otherwise intense pitchers' duel, as the No. 1 Warriors scored twice in the sixth and three times in the eighth to put the game out of reach and finish a four-game sweep with a 6-2 win over the Gators Sunday at Warrior Field.
The four-game sweep is the No. 1 Warriors' second straight over SFSU including 2008. It is their third four-game sweep of 2009 and their seventh since 2007. Cal State Stanislaus moves to 16-3 overall and remains in first place with an 8-2 record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Francisco State falls to 5-13 overall and 1-11 in CCAA play.
With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth and San Francisco State starter Patrick Haugen rolling, a short pop fly between third base and the mound was dropped by Haugen himself when he collided with thirdbaseman Ricky Del Zompo. The error allowed
Jake Oketani to reach safely and began a two-out rally where the Warriors would load the bases and take the lead for good with two unearned runs, thanks to a two-RBI single by
Leandro Dottavio.
Making his first start of the season, senior
Matt Costa threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings, which dropped his season ERA from 10.12 to 3.86. He gave up just one hit and struck out four. Costa struggled with his control, walking four batters, and was removed in the fifth for reliever
Eric Federico, who made his eighth appearance of the season.
The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Dottavio, driving in catcher
Seth Hudson who had reached with a double. It was all the offense the Warriors would be able to muster, however, as San Francisco State starter Patrick Haugen dominated the Cal State Stanislaus lineup through the first 6 2/3 innings. Haugen had seven strikeouts, one walk and scattered three hits until his fateful error.
Dottavio would finish the day 3-for-3 with five RBIs, a double and a walk. The Warriors got three more insurance runs in the eighth on a two-RBI double from Dottavio and an RBI sacrifice bunt by
Alex Zanini. San Francisco State's first run came on a homerun to left-center field by Jeff McCall in the sixth inning that tied the game at 1-1. The Gators made the score 3-2 in the eighth inning on a pass ball by Hudson.
In the series the Warriors outscored the Gators 33-6. They banged out 40 hits in the series, including six homeruns. The Warriors' pitching staff had a 2.16 team ERA over the weekend.
After playing 16 of their first 19 games of the season at home, the Warriors will head out on the road for 20 days, spanning three separate CCAA series. Friday at 3 p.m. the Warriors begin a four-game set against CCAA opponent No. 17 UC San Diego in La Jolla. The team returns to Turlock on March 28 for a noon doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay.
