LOS ANGELES — Late inning drama provided for a great baseball game and a thrilling finish for the Warriors as Cal State Stanislaus hung-on to beat Cal State L.A., 5-4, in 10 innings at Reeder Field.
With the bases loaded and just one out, the Golden Eagles threaten to tie and win the game, but Stanislaus closer
Eric Cendejas got Jesus Campos to fly out to right for the second out. With the base runner Mario Ramirez tagging trying to score the game-tying run, right fielder
David Contreras threw a strike to catcher
Chase Perez, who held on and tagged out the runner to end the game.
The victory upped the Warriors record to 24-12 overall and 14-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as they even-up the four-game series at 1-1. Cal State L.A. Dropped to 24-14 and 16-10 in the CCAA.
Cal State L.A. Answered every Cal State Stanislaus scoring on the day. Each time the Warriors would score in the top half of the inning, L.A. Would tie the game in the home half. With the score at 3-3, Stanislaus would take the lead in the ninth.
Kyle Loretelli led off with a double and moved over to third on a bunt by
Jake Oketani. Contreras then singled up the middle to score Loretelli for the 4-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles again even the score in the bottom of the second when Danne Quiroz hit a two-out, pinch-hit home run off Cendejas to send the game into extra innings. The next batter would triple but Cendejas got Brendan McQuaid to groundout to end the inning.
In the top of the 10th, Stanislaus loaded the bases with two walks and an intentional walk issued to
Ryan Silver. With the bag full of Warriors, Loretelli was hit by a pitch to bring in
Seth Hudson for a 5-4 lead. Silver had been the hottest hitter on the day going 4-for-5 and drove in a run in the leadoff spot for Stanislaus.
An infield single, a walk and a Warrior error would allow Cal State L.A. to load the bases with nobody out. However, Cendejas managed to get Tartamella to strikeout swinging to set up Campos' at-bat. After Campos fouled off a couple of pitches down the left field line, Campos drove one to shallow right for the final sequence of the game.
Despite blowing the save in the ninth, Cendejas earned a win to improve to 3-0. He went two innings and gave up a run on three hits. Loretelli finished 3-for-4 with a double, Hudson was 2-for-3 and Contreras also had two hits in the Stanislaus 12-hit attack.
The teams will complete the four-game set with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
