Warriors finally beat HSU with powerful offense in split

ARCATA — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team snapped three streaks with the game one win of Saturday's doubleheader split at Humboldt State — and the Warriors did it with some thunder.

The Warriors defeated No. 6, and defending national champion, Humboldt State, 13-7, before dropping the second game 5-0 to salvage one win during the four-game set to complete the conference-road portion of their schedule.

The win snapped a 15-game losing streak to the Lumberjacks — a feat the Warriors almost pulled off twice on Friday — dating back to 2007. The victory is also the Warriors first in 11 California Collegiate Athletic Association games over the Jacks since HSU joined the conference three seasons ago. The third streak ended was a current three-game skid as Stanislaus improved to 25-15 overall and 12-12 in CCAA play with two regular season weeks to go. The Warriors have eight conference games left — all of them at home before the CCAA conference tournament.

Cal State Stanislaus jumped on Humboldt State quickly in game one today as the Warriors immediately hushed the crowd that just witness HSU's senior day pregame ceremonies . Stanislaus got on the board early and often, scoring five runs in the first two innings. After Erica McIntyre led-off the game with a triple, shortstop Meghan Franksen homered to center against Lumberjack starter Gracie Perez. In the second inning it was McIntyre driving in the runs, hitting a three-run homer to left field against Perez.

The Warriors then doubled their lead in the fourth, going up 10-0 with Franksen's second two-run homer of the game being the highlight of the inning. Britney Borba and Jennifer Arnold also recorded RBIs in the fourth.

It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth with the mercy rule looming over them that the Jacks got their first runs of the game when Lindsay Warren hit her ninth homer of the year.

Stanislaus got two of the three runs back in the next half inning thanks to Alyssa Guzman scoring on a wild pitch and McIntyre's RBI single, her fourth of the game. The Jacks came as close as they would in the bottom of the sixth, scoring all four runs of the inning on a Nikki Ketteringham grand slam to right field.

The powerful Stanislaus offense, one that even received praise from HSU coach Frank Cheek, pounded out 16 hits as every player in the lineup picked up at least a hit. McIntyre finished 3-for-5 with four runs batted in, Franksen went 3-for-4 with two homers and drove in four runs and three other Warriors — Arnold, Kimiko Wright and Guzman — each had two hits.

"They can really swing the bat," Cheek said. "We walked a lot of people and they made us pay for it."

Jessica Gaumnitz was great early on before allowing seven runs on five hits in five-plus innings to earn the win to improve to 14-6. Stacey Hains pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up just a single to Marissa Slattery, the first batter she faced in the sixth right after the Ketteringham grand slam.

Game two was a different story as the Warriors managed just four singles against HSU pitcher Nichole Parada. Humboldt State scored twice with a two-run home run by Felicia Vivieros in the second inning and tagged on runs in the fourth and fifth off Arnold. Slattery and Natalie Galletly hit back-to-back homers in the fifth.

During the four game series, the two teams combined and hit 15 home runs with the Warriors belting five.
