TURLOCK — Errors ultimately made the difference today as Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State Monterey Bay split a conference doubleheader at Warrior Softball Field.

Cal State Stanislaus won game one, 1-0, on a throwing error and Cal State Monterey Bay capitalized on a fielding error en route to a 6-1 nightcap win as the teams split on day one of the two-day, four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.

The Warriors remain .500 in conference play with a 13-13 record and are 26-16 overall while the Otters go to 29-23-1 overall and 16-10 — holding on to third place in league play.

In the opener, the teams were deadlock without a score during a pitching dual between Warrior senior Jessica Gaumnitz and Monterey Bay's Shelari Rowell. Gaumnitz got out of jams in the second and seven innings to keep the Otters off the scoreboard to provide Stanislaus the opportunity to win in the bottom of the seventh.

Rowell kept the Warriors at bay, as well, including a stretch where she sat down 10 Stanislaus batters in order. She also allowed just two singles to the Warriors until the seventh.

In the Stanislaus seventh, Ashlee Genseal led off with a single to left that was following by another Jennifer Arnold single to left. Britney Borba then hit a comebacker to Rowell. The pitched went for the force play at third base to cut-down pinch-runner Adrienne Sorenson, however, Rowell's throw sailed high to allow the game-winner to score.

Just moments earlier, Gaumnitz had escaped a CSUMB rally in the top of the seventh. Ashley Trotter doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a bunt. Gaumnitz then walked pinch hitter Valerie Calderon with one out. The ensuing batter, Jennifer Montez, lined out sharply to second as CSUS second baseman Nikky Rissetto tossed out the runner at first for an rally-ending double-play.

Gaumnitz picked up the win going seven innings and allowed four hits to improve to 15-6. She struck out four and walked three. Arnold had two of the team's four hits off Rowell in game one.

In the nightcap, with the scored tied at 1-1 through four, Cal State Monterey Bay caught a break on a fly ball to right. With a runner tagging at second, right fielder Borba wasn't able to hang-on before attempting to toss out the runner. The play turned into a four-run inning for the Otters for a 5-1 CSUMB lead. All four runs in the inning were unearned by Stanislaus starter Arnold. Arnold went 4 2/3 innings and gave up six hits for the loss.

Still, the Warriors had many chances to even the score, but the key hits eluded the Warriors against CSUMB pitcher Jessica Boyle. Cal State Stanislaus stranded 13 base runners — at least two runners five times and left the bags full to end the game. Boyle gave up eight singles and five walks while striking out six for the win to improve to 11-11.

Meghan Franksen, who drove in a run in the first inning, and Kimiko Wright each had two hits in game two.
