Warriors sweep CSUDH on senior day

4/25/2009 5:37:43 PM

TURLOCK — On senior day, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors did what they had to do: sweep Cal State Dominguez Hills and hope to get some help.

However, the Warriors didn't get much help as UC San Diego swept Cal State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State split with San Francisco State. Despite finishing 17-15 in the CCAA, the Warriors (30-18 overall) will not qualify for the California Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournament next weekend in Stockton.

Stanislaus, the No. 6 ranked team in the West Region, will sit out the conference tournament weekend and wait to find out its fate in the NCAA West Regionals.

Still, it was a great day for the Warriors as they beat Dominguez Hills, 4-3 in 13 innings, and 5-0 in the nightcap, to complete the weekend sweep and celebrated senior day and the regular season finale. All six seniors contributed greatly to the sweep and pitcher Jessica Gaumnitz recorded her career strikeout No. 500 in the seventh inning of game one.

The four-game series sweep is the Warriors third straight over Cal State Dominguez Hills in as many years.

Brittany Balanesi's single to right in the bottom of the 13th inning finally ended the three-plus hour game one marathon. With the teams tied at 3-3 since the fifth inning, the Warriors rallied in the 13th when Britney Borba reached on an fielding error by the CSUDH shortstop. A strike out and a sacrifice bunt later, with two outs, the Toros elected to intentionally walk Erica McIntyre, who has been a hot hitter of late.

Balanesi, who entered the day hitting .159, took a 1-1 offering from Regina Farfan to right to score the game-winner. It was the second time in three innings that CSUDH intentionally walked McIntyre ahead of Balanesi.

The Warriors had taken a 3-1 lead in the third inning when Ashlee Genseal homered to left to score two. Dominguez Hills answered back in the fifth with two unearned runs to tie the score.

From that point on, pitchers on both sides rallied to get out of jams numerous times with great defensive plays behind them. The Warriors had a shot to win the 11th with a Alyssa Guzman two-out double off the centerfield wall. She was followed by a bunt single by Nikky Rissetto and Dominguez Hills intentionally walked McIntyre to load the bases to face Balanesi, who flew out to right to end the inning.

Gaumnitz pitched the first eight innings and allowed three unearned runs on seven hits. She struck out four — and now has 501 career strikeouts — and walked one to get the no decision. Stacey Hains pitched brilliantly in relief, allowing just three singles and getting out of jams, in five innings to pick up the win.

Genseal finished 3-for-6 and Meghan Franksen went 2-for-5 in game one.

Balanesi and Franksen stayed hot in game two as Balanesi doubled to start the fourth inning and scored on a Franksen single through the left side for an early game two lead. Jennifer Arnold then scored Franksen with a roller up the middle for a 2-0 advantage through four.

Stanislaus tagged on three runs in the fifth highlighted by doubles by Guzman and Franksen and RBI hits by McIntyre and Balanesi for a 5-0 lead.

CSUS pitcher Arnold turned in her second consecutive strong outing of the weekend with a five-hit shutout. While not overpowering — with one strikeout and a walk — she earned the win and improved to 11-7.

Katie Jordan, Faran and Liz Vasquez each had three hits for Cal State Dominguez Hills (35-23, 17-15 CCAA) in the doubleheader. Farfan, who pitched 9 innings in relief in game one suffer the loss (25-16) while Kristin Tanaka (0-2) was tagged with the loss in the nightcap.
