Kyle Loretelli went 3-for-4 with
Casey Filkins and
Leandro Dottavio both homering as the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team avoided the series sweep with a 8-4 win at Nettleton Stadium at Chico State on Sunday.
The win is the Warriors' 30th of the season, giving the team its second consecutive 30-plus win season and third such accomplishment in the last four years. The Warriors improved to 30-18 overall and 15-16 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
In a season where their conference schedule was road-heavy, the Warriors will finish the year with four home games next weekend against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Warriors are 23-4 at home and 7-14 on the road this season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills won its sixth straight game on Sunday with a 18-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay. The CSUDH win eliminated the Warriors from contention for a berth in the CCAA conference tournament in Palm Springs.
Filkins belted a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Warriors an early 3-0 lead. Filkins then drove in the fourth run in the third to score
Kyle Loretelli who led off the inning with a triple. Loretelli singled in
Jake Oketani in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.
Cal State Stanislaus starter
Eric Cendejas – the Warriors' closer who was making just his second start of the season, allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits in five-and-two-thirds innings to earn the win and improve to 4-0.
Eric Federico allowed just one unearned run in three-and-two-thirds innings to earn his fourth save. He struck out five, including three to end innings in which the Wildcats had the tying or go-ahead run at the plate.
The Wildcats broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs, two of them unearned for Cendejas -- to make it 5-3.
Leandro Dottavio's home run leading off the fifth made it a 6-3 game. Then the Warriors got two insurance runs in the eighth on
Chase Perez's ground-rule RBI-double and
David Contreras' RBI-single.
Loretelli finished with three hits with a double and a triple. Filkins was 2-for-5 with four RBIs and Dottavio went 2-for-4. Oketani,
Ryan Silver and
Chase Perez each also had two of the Warriors' 15 hits.
