TURLOCK -- The No. 13 Cal State Stanislaus Warriors baseball team rebounded Sunday from getting swept in a doubleheader at Sonoma State on Saturday to get their own doubleheader sweep at Warrior Field, 15-6 and 13-5, over Academy of Art.
The Warriors improve to 23-11 overall and hold onto their 13-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association record. They are now 10-1 in non-conference games this season and are 18-3 playing at Warrior Field. The Urban Knights fall to 0-21 on the year.
Derek Eaton struggled early on in game one and was replaced by senior
Matt Costa, who would throw 4 2/3 innings of hitless, walkless, scoreless ball in relief, striking out two and earning the win to move to 1-0.
Jacob Thelen charged the Warriors' offense in game one with two three-run homeruns, his second multi-homerun game of the season. He would finish 2-for-4 in the game with six RBIs.
Chase Perez also did well in game one, raising his average above .400 with a 2-for-3 showing.
The Urban Knights struck first in inning one with back-to-back leadoff doubles by Zach Mexicano and Chris Vargas. The Warriors responded in their first at-bats with three runs to take back the lead for good. That inning was mirrored in the box score in the second, with AAU getting another run and the Warriors tacking on three more to take a 6-2 lead after two.
The Warriors led by as much as 15-2 after getting five runs in the third, three runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh, but Academy of Art would not go down without a fight. The Urban Knights started the inning with five straight hits and a walk to bring in four runs and make the final score 15-6.
Usual closer
Eric Cendejas took the mound in game two as part of a pitcher-by-committee predetermined setup and performed well. Cendejas was perfect through 3 2/3 innings before giving up two straight hits in the fourth inning. Even with two runners in scoring position, Cendejas would fan Urban Knights catcher Florentino Ubungen to get out of the jam and keep his season ERA at a perfect 0.00.
The Warriors scored at least one run in every inning they came to bat except for the first, going up 7-0 after four innings. Catcher
Seth Hudson led Cal State Stanislaus with a 2-for-2 performance and three RBIs.
Joseph Pilatti had a mulit-hit game going 2-for-4, and so did
Zach Cadet (2-for-3) and
Ryan Silver (2-for-5). The Warriors had 11 hits as a team in game one and finished Sunday with a total of 22 hits in the doubleheader.
The Warriors were leading 12-2 heading to the sixth inning, but again the Urban Knights would put up a late fight. Academy of Art got two runs in the fifth and in the sixth, stroked three one out hits and drew a walk to score three runs and make the score 12-5.
Cal State Stanislaus will now look forward to perhaps its biggest series of the season coming up this weekend. Currently sitting in fifth place in the CCAA, the Warriors head to Los Angeles Thursday to begin a four-game CCAA series against third-place Cal State L.A. First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
