TURLOCK — The offensive machine that is known as the Chico State Wildcats scattered 13 hits in a 7-0 blanking of the Warriors in the series opener on Friday.
Chico State, which also got a nice pitching performance from starter Michael Gleason, improved to 16-5 overall and 12-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Chico State entered the week as the No. 9 ranked team in NCAA Division II.
The Warriors managed six hits in the shutout loss as they fall to 10-12 overall and 6-7 in the CCAA.
Chico State, known for its offense in 2010, show off its pitching with ace Gleason on the day. Gleason pitched seven shutout innings and gave up six hits before giving the mound up for the bullpen. Gleason allowed just four singles in the first six innings -- no more than one in each frame.
The Warriors finally mounded a rally in the seventh inning with
Andrew Graves picking up an one-out single to left.
Vince Hungerford also singled to left with two outs, but Gleason got
John Canepa to line up sharply to right to end the inning.
Chico State took a 2-0 lead in the third on a couple of singles and a bases loaded walk. The Warriors also committed an error in the inning. The Warriors would tag on runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth for the final count.
Stanislaus starter
Vinny Pacchetti got the loss as he gave up five runs on nine hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked five. It was his first outing since March 5.
Graves was the only Warrior with multiple hits going 2-for-4.
Entering the weekend, Chico State is second in the CCAA with a .373 team batting average. They were averaging 11.2 runs per game and had scored 20-plus runs three times.
