CHICO -- The No. 9 ranked Chico State Wildcats and their highly rated offense came alive on their home field at Nettleton Stadium on Sunday. With two big innings, the Wildcats swept Cal State Stanislaus, 8-2 and 9-0 to win the series.
The Wildcats scored eight runs sixth inning in game one and six runs in the first inning of game one for the California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader. Chico State improved to 13-1 at home this season.
Cal State Stanislaus, coming off a 18-5 rout of the Wildcats in Turlock on Saturday, falls to 11-14 overall and 7-9 in the CCAA. Chico State improved to 18-6 and 14-6 in the CCAA.
Warrior starter
Kory Wallace allowed just one hit through the first five innings of the opener, but got in trouble in the sixth. Three straight singles started the Chico inning to chase Wallace and reliever
Eric Cendejas didn't do much better.
Wallace ended up being charged for three runs on five hits in five innings of work. Cendejas allowed four runs on three hits without getting an out. A couple of errors and a balk mixed in the inning with eight Wildcat hits and eight runs on two Stanislaus errors.
Stanislaus avoided the shutout with two runs in the ninth.
Colton Beatty doubled and scored on Corey Conflenti's fourth home run of the year.
Chico starter Scott Green yielded just two hits and struck out seven in seven innings of work for the win.
In game two, the Wildcats jumped on CSUS starter
Derek Eaton in the first inning. Eaton was chased after facing six batters and got one out. He was charged with five runs on four hits. By the time the top of the second rolled around, Chico led 6-0.
The Wildcats would add three runs in the sixth for the final count.
Stanislaus collected three of its five hits in the seventh inning. The Warriors' best chance to score was the seventh with three singles, but a double-play grounder erased the first runner and two runners were left stranded.
John Canepa had two of the five hits.
