TURLOCK — The bats are starting to heat up for the Cal State Stanislaus softball team as the Warriors pounded out 11 hits and scored 10 runs in the opener against Hawaii Hilo on Wednesday.
Veronica Luna went 3-for-4 with a triple and drove in four runs to lead the 11-hit attack as Stanislaus (6-20-1) took game one of the non-conference doubleheader, 10-3. Hawaii Hilo (23-10) rebounded behind a strong pitching performance in the nightcap to win 6-2.
Luna, who batted in the No. 9 spot in the lineup, was one of three Warriors with a triple in game one. Luna drove in two runs with a single in the fifth inning with two outs, and again with two outs, drove in two more runs with a triple in the sixth.
Nikky Rissetto got the hitting started in the first inning with a run-scoring triple to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead. After UHH scored three runs in the third,
Erica McIntyre tied the score for Stanislaus with a two-run homer to left centerfield.
Brittany Balanesi also tripled in the fifth to score
Missy Corral. Balanesi finished with two hits, so did Rissetto.
The run support helped freshman starter
Brittani Weatherford to her third win as she pitched all seven innings. She allowed three runs on 10 hits, but struck out six without issuing a walk.
In the nightcap, Hilo jumped out on top in the first with a two-run home run by Sarah Weisskopf. Tessa Truong also belted a two-run jack in the fourth that gave UHH a 4-2 lead. For Truong, also a ninth place batter, it was her second homer of the day as she hit a solo shot in game one. Truong finished the day 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs.
Jennifer Arnold pitched five innings and gave up six runs on seven hits to get tagged with the loss. She struck out four and walked one. Offensively, Arnold doubled in a run in the third inning.
Sarah Locarnini went 2-for-4 and had two of the team's five hits in the nightcap against Vulcan pitcher Amber Waracka. Waracka struck out eight, including six straight early in the game, and gave up two runs in the complete game.
Locarani, who also had a hit in game one, extended her hitting streak to 19 games.
The doubleheader was a prelude to this weekend's major collegiate tournament as 22-teams West region teams converge in Turlock for the ninth annual Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno. A total of 73 games will be played over three days at Pedretti Sports Complex and Warrior Field.
