TURLOCK — Warriors pitching and hitting came alive with 5-1 and 8-2 wins over Cal State San Bernardino in Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader.
The Warrior's are having a winning weekend so far and are working on sweeping Cal State San Bernadino if things go the way they hope tomorrow.
With Saturday's sweep, the Warriors improved to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State San Bernardino, which came into the weekend in first place with a 11-1 CCAA records, falls to 11-5 overall and 11-4 in the conference.
David Contreras was the hero in game one when he hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 11th to give Stanislaus the 5-1 thrilling victory.
John Canepa homered and
Corey Conflenti drove in three runs in the nightcap to lead the Warriors offense.
Game one of today's doubleheader showcased a pitching dual between CSUSB's Brandon Conniff and Warrior junior,
Andrew Stueve.
Stueve walked CSUSB's first batter of the game, center fielder Eric Chapman, Chapman reached second on a sacrifice bunt, and Mathew Winn hit a double to bring Chapman home. The Warriors answered back in the 3rd when second baseman
Alex Zanini homered.
Conniff and Stueve battled it out until the 8th inning when Conniff was replaced by Lucas Sanford and Stueve's place on the mound was taken by winning pitcher
Eric Cendejas.
Stueve finished with seven innings of work without allowing an earned run. He fanned five and walked three. Cendejas finished the game with four full innings on the mound and allowed just one hit and struck out five.
The Warrior bats came alive for the second game, allowing themselves some room to breath for the first time against the Coyotes. Stanislaus's starting pitcher
Kory Wallace gave up one run in the first. The Coyote's leadoff batter Chapman hit a triple to right center than one batter later Cory Madison hit a sacrifice fly to earn the RBI.
Wallace pitched an impressive game, throwing all seven innings while only giving up eight hits and walking one. Wallace is now 2-2 this season.
The Warriors scattered 15 hits in the nightcap, chasing CSUSB starter Daniel Stenavich after 1 1/3 innings of work. Zanini went 2-for-3 with a double and Canepa was 2-for-3 with including the two-run homer in the fourth. Conflenti drove in three runs.
