TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team fell to the San Francisco State Gators, 5-2 and 6-5, Saturday in their final two California Collegiate Athletic Association home matches.
With just one contest left in the 2011 season the Warriors are now 25-21 overall and 17-20 in the CCAA. The Gators have improved to 16-33 overall and 11-28 in conference play.
Leonard Giammanco started game one of the doubleheader for Stanislaus. Giammanco, one of the 16 seniors recognized in their final home game as a Warrior, pitched just three innings. Unable to hold off the Gator bats, he allowed five earned runs on seven hits and only struck-out one batter.
The Warriors were the first to score in the first inning after
Zach Cadet's two-out single up the middle scored lead-off
David Contreras, who reached safely on a double to center field. Cal State Stanislaus scored once more in the second, once again with a lead-off double by
Vince Hungerford. Kory Vitado advanced Hungerford to third after grounding out to the second baseman. Catcher,
Joe Medeiros then hit a sac fly to the right fielder to score Hungerford.
Although, the Warriors came out of inning two with a 2-2 tie score, they were unable to score anymore on Gator picher, AJ Comaskey, who pitched all nine innings for San Francisco State.
Chris Short came in for relief with the bases loaded in the fourth, to allow just one Giammanco run to score. In six innings Short allowed just three hits and struck-out four Gator batters.
In the nightcap, the Warriors took advantage of some defensive errors and off pitching to take a 3-2 lead.
Ryan Vander Tuig started game two for Stanislaus. Vander Tuig allowed two runs early in the first, but then pitched four more scoreless innings. In the fourth Vander Tuig struggled to find the plate and allowed the Gators to score two more, challenging the Warriors lead with a 5-4 score.
In the seventh, a hurt senior,
Casey Filkins was brought in to face a batter, where he gave up a single to the center fielder.
Phil Quade then took over on the mound, but had no luck in stopping the hot bats of San Francisco. With just one out Quade gave up a triple which scored SF State's Andrew Suvunnachuen and tied the score at 5. After, walking the next batter, Quade gave up a sac fly to left field that gave San Francisco their first lead of the game.
The Warriors were unable to make anything happen against strong relief pitching by the Gators and finished their final home game with a loss of 6-5.
Senior outfielder, Contreras led the Warriors offensively hitting 3-for-6 with two runs, two walks, and two doubles on the day.
Zach Cadet also had a strong day at the plate, batting 3-for-7 with a run and two RBI's.
Cal State Stanislaus will wrap up their 2011 season at San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is at noon.
