LA JOLLA — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team took the UC San Diego Tritons, the defending national champions, to extra innings in the nightcap before falling twice in two close games on Friday.

UC San Diego, ranked No. 1 in the NFCA Preseason poll, rallied to win game one 4-1, before edging the Warriors, 5-4, in nine innings in game two.

Lauren Liming went 3-for-6 with a home run in the doubleheader. Her solo homer in the second inning of game two gave the Warriors an early 1-0 lead. Sarah Locarnini, who went 3-for-4 in the nightcap, had four hits on the day.

The Warriors have lost six straight and fell to 4-11 overall and 0-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UC San Diego is now 7-3 overall and 3-3 in CCAA play.

Trailing 4-1 in the sixth inning of the second game, the Warriors put together a three-run rally to tie and eventually battled into the extra frames.

After Locarnini beat out a bunt single to start the inning, back-to-back doubles by Vanessa Del Toro and Kiley Mendez scored two runs. With two outs, pinch-hitter Kaitlin Goulart singled to center to score pinch-runner Laura Ginns from second to tie the game.

In the UCSD ninth, however, the Tritons capitalized on an intentional walk issued to Kris Lesovsky. Lesovsky stole second and with two outs, Mya Romero singled down the left-field line to score the game-winner. Romero's hit was just UC San Diego's third hit in the game.

Natalie Rendon was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on two hits in 3 1/3 innings. One of tose hits, however, was a costly three-run home run in the third by Triton catcher Caitlin Brown. Kristan Burns threw 3 2/3 of scoreless and hitless innings before handing the pitching duties to Mendez to start the eighth.

In game one, again the Warriors had a 1-0 lead after Ginns scored on a UCSD Triton error in the second inning. However, the Tritons scored three times in the fifth, highlighted by a bases clearing double by Romero, and plated a run in the sixth for the final count.

This conference series, the Warriors' first of the season, concludes on Saturday with a twinbill starting at 11 a.m.
