Cal State L.A. sweeps twinbill from Warriors

LOS ANGELES — Unable to avoid the big innings, the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team dropped both games of a conference doubleheader at Cal State L.A. on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles scored seven runs in two innings to eventually pull away to a 10-6 win in game one. In the nightcap, Cal State L.A. erased a 2-0 Stanislaus lead with three runs in one inning to win 3-2 in seven innings.

Cal State L.A. (7-2, 3-0 CCAA) took a 4-0 lead in the second on an inning that started with a Warrior error. The Golden Eagles capitalized and used five hits, including three straight, with two doubles to plate four scores. L.A.

The Warriors (1-4, 0-3 CCAA) responded with three runs of their own in the third with Colton Beatty driving in a run and Andy Yingling singled in two runs.

However, L.A.'s David Compton smacked a three-run home run in the third to put the Golden Eagles up 7-3. After CSUS put together three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, L.A. scored three late runs for some cushion and the final score.

Justin Manci went 2-for-4 with a two-run double in the sixth and Beatty had twwo hits and drove in two runs to lead the Stanislaus offense. D.J. Arellano and Ross Gonsalves each also had two singles. Rafael Vasquez was tagged with the loss in his start. He gave up 11 hits, four earned runs in six innings while fanning five batters.

In the nightcap, the Warriors got on the board in the first innng with Eli Davis reaching with a double to left. He then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Davis then hit a solo home run to left in the fourth to put Stanislaus up 2-0.

But, Cal State L.A. used another three-run inning to take the lead. In their fourth inning, the Golden Eagles get their rally started by yet another Stanislaus error to allow Daniel Duran to reach to start the inning. The next batter, James Wharton, belted a two-run home run to center. The next batter, Cliff Quick, would reach as he was beamed by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Quick then went to third on a single and scored the go-ahead run on a bunt play.

In the end, Davis accounted for two of the team's three hits in the shortened seven-inning game of a doubleheader. Yingling had the other hit, which came in the sixth with two outs. L.A. starter Gabriel Asakura retired 10 of the final 11 batters to pick up the win. Asakura threw all seven innings and struck out eight.

So far this season, the Warriors have committed 14 errors and allowed 15 unearned runs in five games.

Cal State Stanislaus would have avoid the sweep on Sunday as the rubber game of the series is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
