Game 2
LA JOLLA — No. 1 ranked UC San Diego took two more games from Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday as the defending national champions Tritons sweep the four-game series.
Camille Gaito pitched a two-hit shutout as UCSD won game one, 8-0, in six innings. The Warriors then dropped another one-run game in the nightcap, falling 2-1.
The Warriors' 10-game stretch away from home to nice places in Hilo, Hawaii and San Diego has not been kind as they went 1-9 with a nine-game losing streak. Cal State Stanislaus is now 4-13 overall and 0-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Stanislaus will have two more games on the road, on Wednesday at Notre Dame de Namur, before hosting a four-game set against Cal State Dominguez Hills next weekend.
In Saturday's game one, Gaito allowed just two singles to the Warriors — an infield hit to short by
Lauren Liming in the second and a single down the left field line to
Rachel Borges in the sixth.
That was all Gaito needed as the 2011 CCAA pitcher of the year took the win while striking out just three batters.
In the nightcap, UCSD took a 2-0 lead after four innings before Stanislaus got on the board in the sixth.
Brieanna Stone drew a walk to leadoff the inning and
Kaitlin Goulart's one-out single up the middle forced the Tritons to bring back Gaito to close out the game in relief of starter Michelle Escamilla.
Gaito fanned
Brittani Weatherford for the second out before
Sarah Locarnini doubled down the left field line to score Stone. Gaito, however, got the next out to end the CSUS threat and pitched a perfect seventh to earn the save.
Locarnini, Weatherford and
Vanessa Del Toro each had two hits in the nightcap, but eight total Warrior hits (against UCSD's six) wasn't not enough.
